Taps our article loudly in frustration: doi.org/10.1039/d1rp... The number of women and men scientists and how they are represented in text books is a serious issue!!!

This is very sad to hear, especially after I seem to remember @drclairemurray.com talking about this exact same problem at least five years ago. BBC News - Only one female scientist named in GCSEs, research finds www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

As part of our #DecolonisingChemistry curriculum project work @chemistryatyork.bsky.social, we now highlight the work of Marie Maynard Daly, the first black woman to receive a chemistry PhD in the USA. Her work developed a mechanistic understanding of heart disease, transforming patient care.

The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.

while I appreciate the intention here, I would insist that comparing ai systems with humans is a category error which rests on flawed and reductive understanding of human beings

The contrast between the number of media requests I got when rich people on a cruise were facing a deadly, but contained outbreak versus now that some of the poorest people in the world are facing a deadly and devastating epidemic is just so so stark and it just really annoys the hell out of me.

folx, I’ve been working on AI "ethics" for almost a decade now & hate to tell you there’s no such thing as "ethical AI" the only "ethical principle" that works is regulating the shit out of the industry & to take back control of our autonomy, fundamental rights, freedoms & right to exist w/out AI

I tried out the government’s AIReady.ie courses you don’t have to! And, really, I don’t recommend you do!!! Here’s a rundown of the experience 🧵👇 (1/30)

Happy birthday to #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! 🐡🧪👩🏿‍🔬 #histsci She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the chemistry of histones & protein 🧵

I live in Berlin, a city where public transport is (relatively) brilliant. But I don't have a public transport ticket. I don't need it. I jump on my (very ugly) bike and get pretty much anywhere I need to go. The doctors, the supermarket, the theatre, the park... It's an exhilarating freedom.

Brandon - "Fietser"@americanfietser.bsky.social

How did your bike enrich your life, fix your finances, or change your family's daily routine? A Stanford study showed stories are 22x more memorable than facts. If we want to get people out of cars, throwing emissions stats at them won't cut it. Humans need stories. Tell me yours. 👇

Jeff Bezos has $222 billion. If he paid my wealth tax this year, we could fund insulin in America for everyone who needs it plus free school lunch for every kid in Texas—and have plenty of money left over. And Bezos would still have $215 billion dollars to spare.

Thank you @drclairemurray.com and @jessamynfairfield.bsky.social and co-authors for this paper taking #scicomm to new places in society!

Claire Murray@drclairemurray.com

We have a cool new paper out in @jscicom.bsky.social 🧪, where we combined climate change and comedy! @jessamynfairfield.bsky.social and Katy Schütte created an improv show that toured rural Irish communities. I evaluated the shows, and the results are in this new paper. 1/ doi.org/10.22323/157...

It's a combination of quantitative and qualitative data, which includes the image in the first post. We analysed the audience's responses to what they had appreciated outdoors, and this graphic visually represents this. The huge bird and water bodies are because so many people mentioned them! 2/

Although our audience's survey responses didn't indicate a huge shift in their likelihood to take action or discuss climate change with family and friends, the performers did increase upwards. Creating improv is a cool way to increase self-efficacy in tackling the climate crisis! 3/

If you are interested in inclusion and equity in citizen science 🧪, this will be a really important community discussion. We will explore our definitions and interpretations in both theory and practice, with the key results being interpreted by the fantastic visual illustrator Ruth Graham. Join us!

Join the #Empowerment, #Inclusiveness and #Equity working group on 25 February, 14-15:00 CET for a new webinar series. '𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑛 #𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒?' community discussion with key points graphically illustrated by Ruth Graham. Register now! https://shorturl.at/mLmZ8

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

This is one for all the #WomeninSTEM. If you are happy to, could you share some of the more awkward and unusual questions you have been asked? The ones your male colleagues would never be asked. I'm running an event @helmholtz.de with the awesome Michelle Browne for #IDWAGIS

Bumping this into the Bluesky science feed, because I always forget to add the 🧪. However, I know there are plenty of Women in STEM there who might want to share their questions!

Funny that this argument hasn't washed with them when children's rights groups are telling them age-gating social media access is a bad idea. But now... I've been saying from the start that age-gating is a cop out on regulating platforms properly. Feeling validated (and furious, frankly).

2026 has started with some of my favourite things: A long forest walk, baking (tea cakes!), letter writing and the promise of some excitement later in the year when I take part in a linotype print class at my local community college. Here's wishing the same joy and hope for you!
