Epic Games' announcement SOUNDS anti-intellectual. It suggests "we don't do hard things." I wonder the effect this could have on perceptions of Unreal-accredited institutions? Does it make an educator seem less rigorous if they wear the badge of an org seemingly retreating from doing "hard" things?

The recent rate rises are tough, but we can survive. Little changes help a lot, but it's getting demoralising how often we need to cut again. That all said, I feel mainly for those who aren't in the position my family is, where they CAN'T make anymore little changes.

This really just makes me...sad. Sad for the kid who doesn't have a father that wants to read to them. Sad for the state of humanity where we would think about interacting with our kids as something to streamline, optimise, or "solve". This is fundamentally depressing.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

This problem is built on an erosion in academic rigour I witnessed when I started my postdoc. I was dumb founded by the grant-and-paper mill some labs were, that consistently created papers referencing work they'd never read. AI slop amplifies human slop.

Hold AI companies (and users) legally responsible for the actions of their agents and I guarantee rogue agents go away overnight.

In the wake of a series of high-profile AI safety incidents, Nvidia is introducing a new software tool that helps keep agents from escaping containment. www.wired.com/story/nvidia...

Yes, the internet, foss, society, and the climate got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we didn't even create a lot of value for shareholders because AI was never actually profitable.

I have blamed The agents That hacked Your website And which You probably Reasonably thought I controlled Forgive me I am rich And unaccustomed To taking responsibility

Oath. If you hate reading, don't be a scholar. If you hate writing, don't be a writer. If you hate drawing, don't be an illustrator. Why did you think we did this shit? FOR THE MONEY?!

If you hate reading papers so much, maybe you shouldn't be in Academia

I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

I deleted Reddit off my phone a few months ago, and my life got better. However, I would occasionally lurk some old subs to just see what was up. Now Reddit has made it so you need the app to even use the site at all. So thank you, Reddit, for making our separation complete.

This view has unfortunately been around for a long time, and often from those outside the field. They generally were criticised for being silly mystics. The problem is they're now emboldened by corporate interests.

Importantly, AI companies make the argument that they have made creativity more accessible. Never let anyone tell you that you need them to be creative.

The thing that always gets me with this is: "Embrace AI!" "OK, how? Why?" "You just should!" "You haven't provided any way in which it will be useful." "You should still use it! It's REALLY IMPORTANT!" You know, I'm not sure it is.

There is no reason to use AI to make art for your game. Use public domain images. Use abstract shapes to represent things. Take photos. Lean into your "crappy" art as a style. "But I can't do that" yes you can. You can try. Art emerges from your craft. Your voice will sing through. If you have one.

Now that I live in South-West Sydney, I know the whole "Red Rooster is the chicken of Western Sydney" thing was invented by fools who never went West of Paddington. The real chicken of the West is FRANGO.

For reasons, I've just traded a 20-40 min commute for one that averages about an 1h10m. With my toddler and infant (daycare at my work). It's a big scary change, but oddly better? We still leave at the same time, I just start a bit later. Still working out pick-up and how to wrangle that. But 1/

And now? My wife, who has a much shorter commute now, is home, relaxed and ready for us all to be together, not still recovering from a mad drive. And now we are paying our mortgage, not someone else's. and I can hear the neighbourhood kids playing, not some pisshead screaming about his ex-wife. 3/

And from our windows are trees and waving neighbours, not blocks of buildings. It isn't perfect. Nothing is. But I'll just keep spinning Ms Moni and Iron Maiden and narrating each bridge if it means my kids can grow up with some grass and room. Not everyone gets to make that call. I'm lucky I can.

The morning is spent having breakfast now, not rushing to get to daycare in time for their breakfast and beating the gridlock traffic. The trip home is a long decompress where we sing, listen to stories, and talk about everything we see. 2/

Men who won't clean up dirty nappies are not men. Little boy needing your wife to do it? FOAD.

My mom told me that my dad refused to change my diapers when I was a baby because he couldn't handle the smell. I wish he was still alive for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that I wish I could tell him about the insane mess I just had to clean up and that he's a fucking pussy.

"...an emerging field of research that seeks to determine whether AI is conscious..." is a statement so wrong I can't begin to unpack. If you can't take the time to engage with a slither of the AI research across the arts & sciences over the years you should not be touching this topic. Read a book.

Even now I remember. The feeling of sonic coins (no machine accepted them). The Sonic Burger's taste. The agitation on my friend's dad's face when he bought "the wrong" ride pass. The CRTs with images of fire you shot from a rollercoaster to "turn off". Even now I remember SEGA world.

I used to draw LOTS. I'd stop and start over the years. My wife has encouraged me to take it up again, partly because everything else I do in my spare time has become my job so I am "hobbyless". Posts like this inspire me to give it a crack. (No, I am not comparing myself to a professional artist).
