I was in music school with two of the folks in this band and I am so stoked that their metal project continues to be successful. Nicest guys on the planet and super talented musicians!

Death metal band Dischordia are back with another immensely heavy album of brutal, technical, and twisted music. Listen to a new song from their album, "Nocturne," here: youtu.be/BFeKYXO8m-Y

If any other composers have been emailed about this, just be aware that it's a study on "AI-assisted music" and your compositions will probably be used as training data! 🙃

You Can See Everything is a masterpiece. Seriously. I cannot think of the last time I saw a film that had me so invested and immediately wanting to watch it again.

Took a day off work at the research center. Cleaned the garage, got insurance issues squared away, caught up on grading, and got formatting stuff done for my dissertation proposal… and still had time to hang out with my wife and cats and watch a film. A 4-day work week would be life changing.

Big news: @FrameworkPuter is more than tripling its sponsorship of CachyOS, from $250/month to $10,200/year! 🎉 This helps keep our infrastructure running and brings us closer to working on CachyOS full-time. Thank you, Framework! 💚

I wasn’t the coolest guy at black metal band practice earlier, showing up with printed sheet music I made from the programmed drum parts. But you know what? I was able to read those songs straight down!

Had an excellent time presenting at the NAfME conference last week! We got to talk to several folks about the wellness needs of music students beyond academics and ways to help from small scale to large scale solutions!

For Bandcamp Friday I picked up two records: Who Loves the Sun by @chatpileband.bsky.social & Ferried Away by Stay Inside. Chat Pile continues to put out amazing music and this new record has some bangers. I saw Stay Inside open for Sincere Engineer back in August and they put on an amazing show!

The alternate phone OS thing isn’t for me. I have too many weird niche needs at the moment. Maybe I’ll give it another go when postmarketOS is a bit more mature.

This is happening every day now. Pretty frustrating that none of this ever occurred before that software update.

My iPhone 15 is getting very hot and running very slow after the 26.6.1 update. Anyone else experiencing the same?

CachyOS update: 2 months in and everything is still working great. I’ve honestly forgotten that I’m running Linux most days. Fandango At Home is the only service I’ve had issues with. Elsewise, gaming, streaming, productivity apps, all great. Might try DAWs and notation software this month.

Fender right now: You can’t make that guitar, it copies our shape too much. Also Fender right now: introducing the Motion! Our new revolutionary MIDI controller for our DAW unlike anything you have seen before!

Okay y’all, the OZ Bike Park lives up to the hype. We don’t have gravity like this in most of OK and even the green trails here are fast and took a minute to acclimate to. Knees, core, and back are sore. Back to our normal XC/trail adventures today.

I’ve been daily driving CachyOS for 4 weeks now and I can comfortably say it does everything I need it to do outside of music creation. Still not letting go of the MacBook Pro for Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Max, and Dorico, but seriously for everything else I’m on board with the penguin.

Over the past week I bought a USB disc drive and started setting up a Jellyfin server. It’s pretty awesome, and I did not know it worked for music as well as it did. 1 movie, 1 series, and over 20 records now on there.

Who told all of the YouTubers about ScienceDirect? So many videos now of creators sharing one-off studies from 2006 without understanding the method and saying that it confirms what they already thought. Young people are watching this stuff thinking that’s how research is done. That sucks.

Going Under is currently $2 in the Steam sale and is absolutely fantastic. I love the gameplay, the humor, everything about it. If you like roguelikes, it’s worth a look. If you just like funny games, there are plenty of easy mode settings to get you through. store.steampowered.com/app/1154810/...

Update - CachyOS rules. 30 minutes to get Steam, Heroic, Itch, and my VPN running with no issues. Limine is great for dual booting. Played a few rounds of ARC Raiders with no controller, sound, or graphics issues. We’ll see how it goes on the laptop, but so far this is actually a good experience.

I’m installing CachyOS now and we’ll see if it goes better. But as a tech nerd who has been doing this stuff for nearly three decades, if there are troubleshooting issues like this, we can’t get grandma away from Windows yet. 4/4

The “2026 year of Linux” is a bit premature. As a person who has dabbled in Linux off and on since Red Hat 6, I was very hopeful with all of the praise from TechTubers on the latest crop of distros. My experience thus far hasn’t been great. 1/4

Fedora was going okay, but my Intel/Nvidia laptop kept defaulting to the iGPU despite two days of troubleshooting, trying multiple driver installs, reading old Reddit threads, it never got where I needed it to be. It’s frustrating when you follow every step of a guide and it still doesn’t work. 3/4

Bazzite installation on my Intel/AMD machine was flawless but not being able to run my VPN of choice without doing manual OpenVPN configs for each server is a nightmare. Also, weird audio issues could not be resolved which is a dealbreaker. 2/4

I have a killer composition idea that is really exciting and innovative but it’s also really, really hard and time consuming to execute and I don’t know if I have enough in the tank to finish it and my dissertation right now. I need to finish this dang book.

The highlight of Steam Next Fest for me. A yesteryear studio building sim where you use abstract hardware synths and sequencers to compose for commissions. And you generate real exportable tracks! Amazing. Definitely worth a look if you are a synth nerd. store.steampowered.com/app/4468030/...
