Don’t understand why GBR* don’t just say, ‘No, you’re not doing this’, either make it first class or make it standard class * Or does GBR still not really a thing yet? If so, what is the GBR livery abomination all about (and Rail Alphabet 3 for that matter)?

Feels like a backward step from Network Rail Wayfinding 3.0, quite possibly to satisfy the whim of someone at DfT When it comes to brand, everything GBR touches turns to mediocre style over substance

@doublearrow64.bsky.social @thebeautyoftransport.com It appears Manchetser Airport has been kitted out with the "latest" version of Wayfinding standards. RA3 in the heavier weight, we are almost full circle back to original Rail Alphabet..! transportsigns.co.uk/project/manc...

The earliest map on which I can find this north curve is this OS one inch map from 1946 (a 1930 map with corrections)

doublearrow.co.uk@doublearrow64.bsky.social

Was this north curve (between ECM1 and BCA) at Sandy real? If so, can’t have lasted long; seems to start appearing on maps c1967 (Map: OS 1:25,000 from the fabulous NLS Maps website maps.nls.uk)

Just look at that chubby symbol (and here’s the reason why)

#OnThisDay 50 years ago BR introduced their revolutionary InterCity 125 on regular services between London Paddington and Bristol/South Wales. Video clip from the BBC Archive from a couple of weeks before the launch previewing the new trains, full video: buff.ly/QGnH3Et

It’s busy, I’ll give you that 😥 So CIE basically took the LT roundel and made it fly, which is ironic as this map predominantly shows land transport 😬

Mike@mikeyashworth.bsky.social

Map of Ireland's bus & rail system in 1961 from that winter's railway timetable - with the CIÉ "flying snail" logo. The country's rail network had seen savage closures over the previous decade & the 'rationalisation' esp. of inter-regional routes was not yet complete. ↘️ flic.kr/p/2sCPsjX

Take my 5p and give me a ‘Time Table’! For the pink and orange, are we talking M100 Y60 versus M60 Y100 (or similar), or are they actual specials? I’ve never really taken the time to examine the ‘Lazy S‘ Selnec logotype but it’s rather spectacular in all its mid-twentieth century italic glory

Mike@mikeyashworth.bsky.social

The old hometown & the 1972 SELNEC bus time table cover; the South East Lancashire & North East Cheshire PTE had been formed in 1969 & would pass to the new Greater Manchester PTE in 1974. The PTE adopted a bold orange livery & the lazy "S" logo. #graphicdesign #transport ↘️ flic.kr/p/2sCEnUE

New signage on facia outside Macclesfield (obvs); much better than the old monstrosity but shame about the red symbol on dark background, no good for colour blindness, need to make these white

Important because sensory overload is prevalent right now; that said, some TOCs have been much better than others with CIS but there has to be a joined up approach under GBR

Excellent sticker on the side of a bus which does actually serve* Millwall football ground * except on match days specifically around kick off and finish times, which is very much TfL’s way of saying, welcome aboard, except *you lot*

Been there for a while now, I think; better for sure than the old version but the ’r’ and the ‘t’ are drifting apart, admittedly they would be very close using standard Rail Alphabet spacing but there you go (also wondering if that’s a negative symbol) :)

Frazzle@frazzle1.bsky.social

Happened upon St Erth earlier @doublearrow64.bsky.social . Better from the last time I was here.

The random angularity of the ‘glitch‘ works against not only (a) the horizontal lines of the train, but also (b) the very specific, carefully thought-out angles of the Rail Symbol, indeed a poorer visual foil for the Symbol one would be hard-pressed to find

alan@spacexecadet.bsky.social

Backward flashes along the length is just plain stupid and on multiple units we'll have to live with that half the time. It's no better and needlessly spoiling the lines when they face forward. Flashes at each end ONLY please, and some below waist continuity of the colours for all other carriages.

Even Amtrak doesn’t wrap a train in the flag. Sure they use a lot of blue and some red and white stripes, but it’s fashioned into a cohesive livery. This is just…embarrassing.

Crummy signage here in Macclesfield which should really just say ‘Platforms 2 and 3’ with the stairs pictogram (and the symbol according to Wayfinding 3.0); the trouble with dozens of TOCs implementing signage is that it’s all pretty rubbish with no incentive to do it in a joined up way

It's the insecurity of that gets me. The only other country I've seen with flag trains is the USA...

Or go back to the drawing board and not be affected or constrained by (a) the red, white and blue of an incidental and divisive flag, (b) an ill-conceived and jumped-up organisational name (which shouldn’t really be seen anywhere near a train), and (c) harmful political posturing based on illusion

Dominic Stucki@dominicstucki.ch

Arrrrgh! 🥴 Loco: Surprisingly ok, apart from the typography. But the carriages look horrible - so much visual noise. What drives me crazy about this slop is, that it wouldn't take much to make it ok-ish. Turn the red and white into something horizontal and get rid of one shade of red and blue each.

An excellent illustration of the age old phenomenon/conundrum of people wanting their ’bit’ of the railway system to matter at the expense of the overarching branding philosophy; still happening today with, for example, line names and some NR stations still using those tired station identifiers

Mike@mikeyashworth.bsky.social

"Think again. Take a train." 1979 BR advert for the newly introduced Crosstown LinkLIne, the diesel train service partially financed by the GLC & LDDC to help develop rail links into east London & Docklands. It's seen many changes since from North London Line to Overground & more. flic.kr/p/2szbrmp

Managed to get a close-up of a GBR/NR tabard today and it’s not good news on the symbol front; might be RS3 looks like they’ve given it an outline/contour which makes it a bit thick, not unlike…etc

Railfreight Petroleum decals on an MGR, ahem Still not sure why the depth of the white band on Network SouthEast locomotives couldn’t have matched the rolling stock Superb photograph though! :)

#OnThisDay 176 years ago the GWR's Banbury (Bridge Street) opened, four months after the LNWR had opened their terminus in the town. In 1991 a down service hauled by 47581 passes brand new 60065 for Didcot power station. Colin Redfearn via Nic Joynson buff.ly/txo1dpv

Got lost for hours at the weekend visiting Paul B’s zenfolio; as they say, nostalgia is not what it used to be Also the Network SouthEast brand compares favourably with the current GBR look; of course it’s 40 years old, let’s not forget #SplashOfRed

Paul Bigland@paulbigland.bsky.social

Today's #BRNostalgia is another scene that's unrecognisable today. A Class 313 calls at Stratford Low Level station in December 1989. Almost everything in this picture's vanished. paulbigland.zenfolio.com/p651486993/e... #railways #photography #nostalgia

They don’t make ‘em like this anymore…

The bold new corporate identity created for British Telecom in 1981 by the influential design agency of Banks & Miles; a publicity folder describing the three main elements - the logo, the decorative strip & the "T" mark. #graphicdesign @doublearrow64.bsky.social flic.kr/p/2sxNRKE

That looks like GBR signage with Rail Alphabet 3; no excuse for the fare zone bit which is a vestige of SWT signage meaning the main white bit is almost certainly an ‘over-vinyl‘ (vinyl will be the end of me)

Miles@mileslanham.bsky.social

Another day, another weighting of New Rail Alphabet, South West Trains odd obsession with fare zones which unbalance the sign. Apparently no estate agents to sponsor the signs at this station either 🎉 @doublearrow64.bsky.social

The supposed ‘InterCity 225’ brand always seemed a bit half-baked to me, ’225’ being the speed in next-to-meaningless km/h—equivalent of 140mph—which never became the maximum operating speed on the ECML anyway due to required braking distances Not really sure why #Electra was dropped?

Almost perfect rake of Regional Railways stock behind an unidentified Class 31/4; note the Network SouthEast impostor with a lighter blue across the windows and a darker shade of blue used to paint out the red lower body stripe :)

This post is unavailable.

A good example of what the Network Rail Wayfinding guidelines were designed to eliminate, namely the same arrow repetitively stacked on a limitless number of planks; if Cambridge South is anything to go by, I fear the GBR Wayfinding guidance will unnecessarily be taking us back in this direction
