When other drivers aren’t perfectly in the middle of their lane they’re maniacs, but when I do it I am merely adhering to the racing line

Non-native speakers of any language, from least confident to most confident - someone who speaks it perfectly as their 2nd language - American student who did 1 year of study abroad - guy who married a native speaker - choir nerd who once did a 6 min piece in that language in 8th grade

Without fail you can ask a question like “can any Congolese scholars explain to me how the syntax around an object noun changes when you ask a question” and someone will be like “I had a solo in a Congolese folk song in choir in middle school so I got this”

Finally worked up the courage to touch a piece I hadn’t practiced for four months because I was scared and turns out it’s better than when I was practicing it every day, what the hell gives

Hair salon setup in my house and paying a professional hairstylist to come wash and blow dry my hair every day

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

It’s not even about having nice hair, it’s just that I really love the sensation of a pro putting their hands on my head. Lil daily scalp massage would fix me I think

The “scared of cities” contingent: I would never step foot in LA! Skid Row! Crime! Drugs! Me: you fools, you imbeciles, the most frightening thing about LA is the Santa Ana winds

Me: I am philosophically opposed to the idea that every minuscule transaction with another person must be reviewed. For gosh sakes we’re all human beings Me after dealing with one (1) annoying person: I should be allowed to leave a scathing review on a random stranger’s face

It's nice to know that AI at its most powerful still can't produce classical music satire that's anywhere near what I can do with a laptop and a free hour and I think that's beautiful

Did anyone know that doing work when you’ve gotten rest and have working brain cells is way better than trying to work when you’re exhausted and your brain is so fried you can’t think? I might be the first person to ever discover this

My self-perception just constantly oscillates between “I am talented and special and no one does it like me” and “I only impress people because arts education and access has been so hollowed out in this country for the last few decades that people are now floored by baseline musical competence”

It may be harder than ever to actually be a classical musician in this country, but it’s never been easier to impress normies who have never been inside a concert hall, so, you know, pros and cons

Pop artists in most countries: I love dancing and falling in love :) French pop artists: absent fathers cause unfathomable pain, society is failing its children, the gender binary is stupid, cancer sucks, here’s a song about a guy named jimmy

If you want to have the busiest, most bonkers year of your life, start a yearlong project like blogging a chapter of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables every day, guaranteed that will act as a lightning rod delivering events into your life that keep you from having time for your silly little project

Reminds me of when I was in the UK shortly after the 2016 election and upon hearing my American accent, British people would go “so how did you let that happen”

I think that as a little treat to me the people who voted for [gestures] all of this should be made to sit through punishing inquiries by randomly selected juries of extremely judgmental Europeans

“You are much safer here than in America, we don’t have the guns here” “We have problems but nothing like your income inequality where people with good jobs cannot afford a place to live” “Don’t worry you can eat the food here”

I did a research project on legendary child prodigies and found that the secret sauce was having parents who provided them with the best musical education possible and connections to a professional network that gave them opportunities That’s it that’s the secret, it’s just access

Thesis: WA Mozart was a tremendously talented kid who only became “Mozart” bc his dad created the conditions for him to succeed Reply guys: oooOOOOH but what if a kid ISN’T talented, then they CAN’T become Mozart even with the right conditions and your thesis is wrong! I am very smart!

Because so many of these “geniuses” came from fathers who didn’t make it big in music and wanted their kids to succeed in their own thwarted ambitions…it’s basically daddy issues all the way down

Wheeeeeee starting to get replies from guys going “but if you give a kid access without talent then they won’t become great” and that is 1) so fkn obvious, guys, good job, and 2) irrelevant if the dataset you’re working with is talented kids. On this topic we are operating with talent being a given!

All of them, according to contemporary accounts, had the normal traits of bright kids as laid out in modern child psychology texts. What turned them into “geniuses” was their environment, ie parents who seized on these elements of basic giftedness and cultivated them with a single-minded zeal
