Today I bought about 10 boxes of magazines and research material from the collection of the Hillbilly Researcher. I'm really excited to add all of this to the archive and to make as much of it available as I can.

Today a soulseek user got upset with me because I grabbed an album from him and he felt that I wasn't sharing enough music. Classic ALL CAPS angry messages from an anonymous person online, it brings me back the early days of file sharing. Little does he know my whole life is sharing music for free.

It really goes to show how perspective changes things. This person saw that I downloaded an obscure metal record and assumed a lot about me and what I do. Called me all sorts of names and didn't believe me when I said I didn't know why he was upset. But really we know nothing about each other.

Sometimes when I'm having a crummy week I read about how the Cleveland Browns gave the biggest NFL contract in history to a guy with dozens of sexual assault cases, who then got multiple season ending injuries, and I think well at least I didn't do something that dumb.

When a recording is made a document is set into time and the quality of the recording equipment is forever merged to the quality of the performance. The history of recording has changed the history in music. Instruments were or left behind based on how they picked up on early microphones.

So without the recording quality of the early 1900s would Boggs' voice sound so high and lonesome? He may have just been another singer you heard when you passed by them on a street busking or playing the matinee at a local bar.

I've been listening to a cd compilation of Boggs and one of the things I think about quite often is that it is often not the MUSIC we are attracted to but the SOUND of the music. If Boggs had been recorded with modern sound equipment would his recordings have the charm they do today?

I'll be selling stuff here! Records, gear, books etc

I was just contacted by the son of a member of a band that I have 1 acetate by. According to him it is the only extant recording of that band. This is why what Dollar Country is doing is important. What if I hadn't bought this acetate at a yard sale? dollarcountry.org/items/show/2...

It sucks when you have something important to post to instagram because you don't know if it's gonna do the thing where it just doesn't show anyone your post and the information doesn't get seen by more than 100 of your followers.

I'm watching Slim & I for the umpteenth time and every time it brings a tear to my eye. In my opinion it's one of the best country music documentaries ever made, and it's about someone most Americans don't even know exists. letterboxd.com/film/slim-i/

I feel like I really started to notice AI's affect on the internet when I looked at a video on youtube and noticed that all the comments were positive. That just doesn't seem natural anymore.

I'm really proud of this photo. It's really tricky getting a good picture of the etching in the runouts of a record and I got this one really nicely today. ꟻMR is the etching of an unidentified mastering engineer.

I just heard from a granddaughter that she found her grandparent's album from stumbling on it in a facebook group for making fun of bad album covers and she told me the comments broke her heart. I try to keep this in mind whenever I stumble on music I don't care for. Each album is someone's dream.

I consider all of the above versions to be important on the timeline of Psycho. After this a lot more bands start to cover it, and qualitatively I'm not saying anything about them being lesser, just that the ones above are a part of the story of the song to me. So here's some more:
