AI web scrapers are creating traffic that degrades the service for actual researchers. I had to setup counter-measures on the #FFAMHE Wiki at least thrice in the past year.

Bonjour, nous faisons face actuellement à une intensification massive du moissonnage des contenus de Gallica par des robots IA, qui dégrade le service à nos utilisateurs humains. Nous travaillons à mettre en place les mesures correctives dans les meilleurs délais.

Currently going through the teachings of captain Péloquin for #sword and #dagger. Fun #HEMA source with a very unique way of representing targets, steps and blade movement.

Many of you know what this is about by now. #Marquisattack is a once-a-year gathering of #HEMA excellence that we have the privilege to host in our beautiful city for the 7th time.

We had fantastic feedback from the previous editions - the limited size of the event and the low entry fee made for a bit of competition for a seat these past years. Contributing is also a way to avoid the dreaded waiting list.

The schedule of workshops and conferences is built entirely on an open call for contributions - and I'm particularly fond of this model - Propositions are evaluated to keep the program varied and to allow all voices, new and old to express their art and share their martial or scholarly expertise.

More than 60 book packaged and sent on Saturday - the printed versions of Gunterrodt should reach backers today. Very glad to help bring to light one of the most important 16th century text on historical fencing. #HEMA #Books

New #HEMA books, freshly received from the printer. Soon available to order from les éditions Solstices, after we've fulfilled all preorders !

Back to school flyer for the best #HEMA club in #Annecy. If you find yourself in the area and want to learn some swordfighting techniques, let me know.

Up until now, there were no other known copies - the existence of printed engravings tells us something about the circulation of its content.

Back from a short week of Holidays. Had the pleasure to meet with my old clubmates in Montreal and Sherbrooke - keeping #HEMA alive and well in Quebec.

In the collection of the National Library of Portugal rests a 500pages long illustrated manuscript in spanish from the 17th century entitled "De la Verdadera #Destreza" - which sounds exciting for anyone fond of geometry and #HEMA (there are dozens of us !)

As enticing as it sounds - unfortunately, it "only" contains an incomplete copy of the Libro de las Grandezas de la Espada by Luis Pacheco de Narváez, probably copied from the 1600 edition.

Hunting for sources sometimes yield new exciting results - and sometimes an entry that sounds promising is mildly disappointing, as the published version of the book is already widely available. At least the illustrations are prettier, and with a better quality than in most online digitizations

Wonderful article on the relation between #combat and #logic - relating Ralph Strode's Obligationes and the 14th century sword & buckler manuscript Ms. I.33 from the Royal Armouries. More academic work for #HEMA !

Happy to share the link of my article cowritten with Pascale Bermon on the Prologue of Ralph #Strode's #Obligationes : the practice of #logic as an art of #combat (Archives d'histoire doctrinale et littéraire du Moyen Âge 2025/1) : shs.cairn.info/tap-wj908zpu... #medievalstudies #historyoflogic

Last year, I went digging through digital library catalogs and found some previously unknown #HEMA stuff : a 1618 German rapier manual (ugly hand-drawn illustrations), a 19th-century copy of a 17th-century copy of the Dürer Fechtbuch, and a 1781 French & German fencing book by Sir Vodromont.

Scans should be available on the Prague museum website within the year - hopefully as soon as June. this is an important piece of French fencing history, and I'm glad to be part of its re-discovery.

I tipped off the PALAS project about the Prague manuscript, and a year late we got scans of "De la théorie ou science de l'espee seule" (40 chapters, legible French script). Olivier Dupuis is currently working on a transcription and will talk about it during his HEMAC conference.

Another interesting find was a catalog entry for Ms. XG 21 in the Knihovna Národního muzea — attributed to "La Fresnaye." If you’re into 17th-century French rapier (you freak), that name should ring a bell.

A few years ago, Ms. 2348 in the Rennes library was digitized by the PALAS project. It’s a 1683 copy by Charles Robin d'Estréans of an earlier sword & dagger treatise by René Bret de La Fresnaye—a Parisian master of arms. It was transcribed by ELSAMHE in 2022.
