This Day in Labor History: October 23, 1995. John Sweeney won the election to become president of the AFL-CIO. People hoped this would revolutionize the labor movement and usher in a new wave of success. It mostly didn't, but it remains a really important moment in American labor history!

Sweeney retired from the presidency in 2009. Trumka took over. In the end, not enough had changed. But I'm not also not real sure that Sweeney could have changed much more given the structure of the economy, growth of far-right politics, and resistance within the labor movement.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1963: More than 225,000 Black students boycott the Chicago Public Schools system to protest systemic segregation and severe overcrowding. Thousands of students, parents and community organizers marched downtown to demand integration and equal resources. /1
