Hey, neighbour! This week council picked new committee representatives, and I was pleased to be selected to continue my work with Calgary Salutes and with CMLC. Deepening the connection between the Canadian Armed Forces and Calgary has been important work.

Serving on CMLC’s board to represent the interests of Ward 4 neighbours has also been very important to me, especially as they conceptualize potential TOC projects that may impact us.

I also look forward to joining the Intergovernmental Affairs committee and the board of Alberta Municipalities. This helps to enhance my ability to advocate on behalf of all Calgarians to other levels of government at a critical time.

Hey, neighbour! I can't believe it's been one year since you put your trust in me to be your Ward 4 councillor, and what a year it has been.

Unresolved issues like broken streetlights and sidewalks are getting fixed in Ward 4, because these are the things that make your neighbourhood so much better.

If you have ideas on how to make your community better over the next three years, please don't hesitate to send me an email. Thank you for your trust and your support.

Hey, neighbour! I can't believe it's been one year since you put your trust in me to be your Ward 4 councillor, and what a year it has been.

From fixing the Bearspaw Feeder Main to repealing blanket rezoning, and addressing pedestrian safety through crosswalk flashing lights and leading pedestrian intervals, I've been working to improve communities in Ward 4.

But the most rewarding part of this job has been responding to the hundreds of emails and requests that I have received about the little things that have been bothering you for far to long.

Today’s incident at CFB Wainwright is an unimaginable tragedy. While details continue to emerge about what occurred, my deepest sympathies, along with those of the City of Calgary and Calgary Salutes, go out to the families of those who lost their lives.

After spending the day with members of the Canadian Armed Forces community, I have seen first hand how connected they are, and how the loss of CAF personnel delivers deep sorrow to those across our nation.

Hey, neighbour 🇨🇦 Yesterday I was happy to join Prime Minister Carney, Premier Smith, Mayor Farkas, Red Deer Mayor Jeffries, former Premier Stelmach, former Edmonton Mayor Sohi, and many others across the political spectrum to encourage Albertans to Vote to Stay.

Unfortunately the premier had to leave for another event before I could get to the bar to share the pint with her as well. We all agree: Vote to Stay, Alberta.

Hey, neighbour 🇨🇦 Monday, October 19, is referendum election day (and advance polls are open through Saturday). Vote like your country depends on it, because it does.

But you don't have to take my word for it. You can hear directly from Prime Minister Mark Carney on why this referendum isn't decided already, and why you need to cast your vote for Canada.

Hey, neighbour! Albertans are called to vote in a provincial referendum that may shape the future of this province and of our nation. You can cast your ballot early at your assigned advance voting location until Saturday, October 17, from 9am to 8pm, ahead of Election Day on Monday, October 19.

Hey, neighbour! Today the province announced that they will be forcing a repeal of blanket rezoning on Edmonton City Council. These changes to the Municipal Government Act are not expected to significantly affect Calgary's progress on a new municipal development plan.

Nor on the work council has planned for next year on zoning bylaws. I am concerned about this overstep by the province into local decision making by voters. While Calgary chose to elect council members to repeal the blanket rezoning bylaw, Edmonton voters did not.

Hey, neighbour! I want to congratulate Mayor Jeromy Farkas and The Nonprofit Chamber for signing a first-of-its-kind MOU in Canada to work closer on behalf of Calgarians.

From youth hockey teams in Ward 4, to seniors housing and support, to likely the community event you last attended over the weekend in your neighbourhood, these are examples of how non-profits make our city better.

I look forward to seeing how my council colleagues can work more closely with The Nonprofit Chamber and all of its member to build a better Calgary.

Hey, neighbour! I want to congratulate Mayor Jeromy Farkas and The Nonprofit Chamber for signing a first-of-its-kind MOU in Canada to work closer on behalf of Calgarians.

This formal partnership framework represents a shared belief that I hold with the mayor that infrastructure is more than just buildings and roads, it also includes the organizations that glue our society together in common purpose.

Hey, neighbour! As of October 1, more of your packaging can go in your blue cart. Snack bags and wrappers, toothpaste and lotion tubes, foam egg cartons and meat trays, and aerosol cans like sunscreen and cooking spray are all accepted now.

It comes from a new provincial rule that makes manufacturers and brands responsible for the packaging they create, so you can now recycle the same things anywhere in Alberta. There's no change to your pickup schedule, and the City still collects your blue cart every week.

Hey, neighbour! Next week I am co-sponsoring a notice of motion by Mayor Jeromy Farkas that would increase transparency for Calgarians by providing additional details to the public from awarded City procurement contracts.

Ten years ago while working for the City, I championed our city's Open Data Portal. I believe this motion will continue that work to make information not only publicly available but also accessible.

Hey, neighbour 🧡 I was at The Confluence today for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It's an important day to take the time to recognize the truth. Many people who held positions just like mine, or who look like me, enacted historical injustice against the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

The only way we get to reconciliation is by acknowledging that truth. I encourage all Calgarians to take time today to learn more about the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and specifically here in Calgary, so that together we can all heal and move closer to reconciliation.

Hey, Neighbour! Oct. 16, join Ward 4 Councillor DJ Kelly and special guest Mayor Jeromy Farkas from 7 to 9 p.m. at Triwood Community Association Hall for a town hall on Ward 4's budget priorities It's free. RSVP today at djkelly.ca/townhall

Hey, neighbour! No level of government affects our daily lives more than municipal government. For the past two days several of my council colleagues and I have had a chance to connect with numerous municipally elected officials, and members of Alberta's government.

I believe our conversations have been critical for Calgarians, especially heading into the four-year budget deliberations in November where we need to be smart with the funding we have available.

That means working together with the province on essential infrastructure projects, and finding efficiencies with other municipalities across the province.

Hey, neighbour! Over the past week I was thrilled to attend the 60th anniversary of the North Haven Community Association and the 65th anniversary of the Triwood Community Association. It was incredible to see a retrospective on the decades of volunteerism that has made these communities great.

Hey, neighbour! Council passed my motion to supercharge adding leading pedestrian intervals at intersections across Calgary which means crossings to get three to seven seconds of lead time before traffic moves, and that decreases the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.

Hey, neighbour! Yesterday evening was a great night of conversation between Ward 4 community associations as part of my second Ward 4 Leadership Forum. I was excited to tour chambers to help them see the direct line of sight between their community needs and Calgary City Council's decisions.

Today I recognized the my friend Harry Sanders in council chambers, who passed away earlier this month just shy of his 60th birthday. Harry as he was better known as Harry the Historian, left an incredible legacy of scholarship about the history of Calgary. He made us better understand our home.

Hey, neighbour! Join me at Citizen Brewing this Friday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the second of my community conversations. I want to hear directly from you about what you think is important for Ward 4 this fall.

Today Calgary sadly added three more names to the list of fallen firefighters during the annual Firefighter Memorial. My condolences to the families of Lorn Howes, Ronald A. Randen, and Alton G. Mathers, and to all of the families of the 84 firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Hey, neighbour! Today I joined the City of Calgary Rainbow Employee Network and my council colleagues Jeromy Farkas, Harrison Clark, Myke Atkinson and Andrew Yule in matching the 2026 Pride Parade. Everyone belongs in Calgary, and this is why it is so important to celebrate Pride.

Today I spoke about my belief that council will prioritize more traffic and pedestrian safety improvements as a part of the upcoming four-year budget debate in November. Next week I am introducing a notice of motion for advanced pedestrian interval timing at lights to increase pedestrian safety.

Hey, neighbour! Now that it is September, kids are back at school and a lot of us are back at work. Today is council's first day back at City Hall, and our first meeting is all about traffic and pedestrian safety. A fitting start to Ward 4 Traffic Safety Week.

Hey, neighbour! Today students across Ward 4 head back to class, and our streets go back to being full of kids. That means walking and biking to school, parents doing drop-offs, and school buses back on the road. Please slow down. Put away the phone. Watch for kids and vehicles at every crosswalk.

Hey, neighbour! Calgary Transit has revised bus routes across the city, and some of these changes will affect how Ward 4 students get to high schools on Monday. Plan ahead by visiting calgarytransit.com to see all of the changes, and have a great first day back at school.
