This is how most "liberal" elites think, they just know not to say it in public. Not only blinkered hypocrite, but their "progressivism", such as it is, often rests on a bed of retrograde chauvinism: All those backwards, barbarian cultures simply have to be kept in line by any means necessary.

Kennedy made a late stage conversion to being a republican because he's, even by the standards of his peers, a weird stupid narcissistic creep - but this kinda thing is what I'd bet most nice rich liberals say in semi-private conversation. It's barely subtext in NYT OpEds after all.

I don't want to shill for anybody but with Firefox (or one of the other versions of you like) + ublock origin+ sponsorblock... I just never see ads. Not on youtube, or Twitch, or anywhere. Chrome, which almost all other browsers are based on now, nerfed adblocking bc Google makes money on ads.

The Indian Act is something that's simultaneously regressive but also ensures, with modern legal precedent, certain rights for indigenous relations with the state. I doubt Carney wants to scrap it for reasons other than ramming through extraction projects with fewer concessions.

This image doesn’t exist so you can say that Something Awful is “largely unmoderated”

"largely unmoderated"????? FUCK YOU >:(

Why is the 'center-left' so full of useless cretins like Eby. People with no vision, who accomplish nothing, and constantly 4-D chess themselves into tunnels painted on walls?

1. Call an early election because the opposition is in chaos 2. Early election causes opposition to stop being in chaos 3. Polls move against you 4. Oh. *Really* against you (Conservatives will be majority government). 5. Resign

Nicole and I had a grand old time with this one. It was fun to just queen out over a movie we both really like.

Sex, death, monster fucking, cunty costumes, blasphemy, a really bad Keanu Reeve performance, in camera effects, a bombastic score, Gary Oldman’s boob wig, and Monica Bellucci dreams. Bram Stoker’s Dracula! Link below ⬇️🩸📽️♥️

What's weird is that so far I've never seen an indie game try and replicate the facial animation technique from Siren on PS2. They not only used digital photos of actors faces, but took dozens (hundreds?) of them to make whole facial animations. The effect is both striking and uncanny.

But PS2 emulation has taken great strides over the last few years, and spoiler-light secondary objective guides are out there (and it's not *impossible* to figure out). If you put in a little work, or even just dabble, you'll be rewarded with an incredibly unique, creepy, atmospheric experience!

This makes it a game that's not well suited for streaming, at least without unusual preparation and focus, unlike most of it's peers. Even regular private play asks more of the player than the average horror game, even of they era. And if has no PC port and is (was?) a bit fussy to emulate.

This means that it doesn't enjoy the same reputation or popularity as a lot of other horror games from the era. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, even Fatal Frame etc... are shortish games you can pick up, figure out and follow an eventful narrative. Good stream/group fodder. So they are better known.

It an incredibly unique game. Not just it's atmosphere and style, but gameplay mechanics and timeline-hopping, episodic, replay based mission-objective structure. This also makes bit obtuse. It was designed so that players would work together online to solve hidden mission objectives.

I'd not an impossible, brutally unforgiving game... but challenging and dependent in trial and error. Each mission is (usually) fairly short, but has one intended solution you find through repeated tries. And you kinda need a (limited) walkthrough or guide for those secret second objectives.

There's a kind of blur or crossfade as one image transitions to another, sometimes more or less visible. There's moments, especially on crt at native resolution, that the effect is pretty convincing but it always at least feels a little odd. But this meshes with the game's atmosphere & direction!

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

The AI slop deluge just intensifies a problem that we've had for the entirety of "Web 2.0" - huge volumes of lazy crap. Frankly, we need curation and gatekeeping. Barriers to entry. Not based on wealth, status, social connection -- but some obstacles that specifically disincentivize slop dumping.

If you impose even very modest time and effort costs then the value proposition disappears. We shouldn't evaluate for quality per se -- there's value in "bad" art -- but we gotta evaluate for effort and intent. Or at least, evaluate for it's obvious absence.

Traditional barriers to entry kept out bulk slop up to a point, but give us... polished slop. Candy gruel. AAA games and MCU movies. We need different barriers. That open the door to weird, even inept, outsiders without all the flatly worthless crap that drowns out the weird and interesting.

You don't want to filter out the 'bad'. Or even the incompetent. You want to filter out the lazy, the careless, and the soulless. The stuff that just isn't even worth criticizing for its failures. That shouldn't be too hard. The rewards for making slop are meagre, it's just easy to do it in bulk.

The constant bombard of e-mails and texts phrased like personal messages is maddening. I have no idea why it works on old people, senility notwithstanding, but geez anybody that doesn't fall for it is only going to have contempt for you. Imo all consultant logic is self defeating like this.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

We are sad to learn that actor Tom Skerritt has passed away at 93. The Emmy-winning actor made his mark on the horror genre as Dallas in the original ALIEN back in 1979, and he also starred in The Dead Zone, Poltergeist III, and 2008's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Rest in Peace.

God, the makeup and styling and Shirley Russell's costumes in this movie are incredible. Oliver Reed's mustache alone should have won an Oscar.

Sucks hearing that "offline is the new online" when you live in a nowhere town with nothing and nobody. I've been horribly online for 28 years, I'm probably not stopping any time soon.

Possession, too? So Jesus lmao. How do you even define porn? Are you gonna be sent to jail for having Game of Thrones on your Hard Drive? Romantasy smut? I think the people who support this don't even realize how much freak shit is *by* and *for* women.

gladiwrites.bsky.social@gladiwrites.bsky.social

holy shit this is horrifyingly dystopian what the fuck why am I even getting this I'm in Canada.

The 2020s version of buying six-packs and coolers for teenagers is letting them use your face or credit card to bypass age verification. I remember video store clerks hassling me and forcing me to call my mom to rent R-rated movies. That is some shit we don't need to RETVRN to.

Awesome how a stupid algorithm can spontaneously decide I'm a minor and lock me out of watching videos about obscure Japanese games. Really cool system. Definitely worth the arbitrary, pervasive Terry Gilliam's Brazil ass bullshit to maybe stop 14 year olds from seeing weird porn.

I have uploaded the GTA San Andreas Google Translate stream to the main channel. Its a mod where all the dialogue is put though Google translate multiple times and comes out as complete gibberish. Its awesome. Check it out here: youtu.be/hTvMvIECbbE?...

Not voting in my local election because I can't really get a bead in any of the candidates. Aside from some obvious cranks, it's mostly the same vague platitudes and Fixing the Problems and Responsible Budgeting. All their statements are scattered across facebook and the local paper.

There's an autistic tendancy, I think, to privilege conveying information over evoking feeling. Or, maybe more accurately, try to evoke feeling with information. A lot of tropes of "bad" fantastica writing essentially boil down to this, I think. For that person, the information itself is evocative.

It's not inherently a bad thing. It's beautiful to imagine vividly and specifically, to internally require only the mere facts of something to conjure in one's mind something sublime. Sometimes the encyclopedia approach works. But it can often fail to serve the story it's telling.

But whichever way you lean, whatever of your tendencies are dominant - intuiting or reasoning, schizo or autistic, [insert reductive dichotomy] - it pays to nurture and explore the other, and not let it wilt in the shadows of your larger self-parts.
