Discourse is now testing a new search on Meta. AI search and keyword search share one box; Discourse can now guess which one you want, and when. 🧵 1/9

To try it on your own site: set up a decision model in admin > plugins > AI > models, turn on the "Combined AI search" upcoming change, then choose your model in the "AI ask AI search intent decision model" setting. 8/9

If you switch away from the AI tab, Discourse counts that as a wrong guess. Switch a few times; Discourse remembers your preferences. 6/9

On Meta, the team logs the rules' verdict, the model's verdict and confidence, which tab opened and why, and whether the searcher switched away and how fast. 7/9

Discourse guesses only when the model is confident; it skips the model when it's slow. Sites without a decision model fall back to built-in rules. 4/9

The rules check search syntax (operators, # category, @ user, quoted phrases), matches inside the current topic, text in a different script from the site default, repeat searches, your learned preference, question phrasing (a trailing ? or five-plus words), and which tabs have results. 5/9

People search a forum for two reasons. Some want an answer: how do I fix this, why does that happen? Others want a thing: a topic, a page, a person. Until now, you had to know which tool to reach for first. 2/9

Discourse asks two questions: Does this search want something explained or solved, or a specific topic, page, or person? And if you searched inside a topic or category, are you asking about that place or the whole forum? 3/9

Every hosted Discourse plan includes credits for our preconfigured hosted LLMs, so you can try this without setting up a model provider. 8/9

Under the hood, it's an agent you set up in the Discourse AI plugin: a system prompt, the LLM of your choice, and custom tools that search and read topics on your forum. You can add URL sources too, like your pricing page. 6/9

You can also add anonymous users to the AI bot allowed groups. They'll see a preview of the page, and if they ask something, they're prompted to log in. Their question is still waiting for them when they're back. 4/9

The natural fit is support. Your forum can power a separate ask subdomain that helps customers find answers without digging through search results. 5/9

Your forum already holds years of answers. Point an AI bot at it, and people can ask a question in plain language and get a reply grounded in what your community has actually written. 2/9

There's a new "AI bot conversations" option for your default homepage. Turn on the AI bot, choose that option, and visitors land straight in a conversation. Anyone without bot access falls back to your usual homepage. 3/9

Until now, your channels were sorted automatically - public channels alphabetically and direct messages by priority. While this was a good baseline, we wanted to give you more control to customize your sidebar the way you want. 2/5

Now, you can set specific preferences for each section of your chat sidebar, including public channels, direct messages, and starred channels. You'll be able to easily filter these sections by all channels, active only, unread, or just your mentions. 3/5
