Susan Ferrier (1782–1854) was born #OTD, 7 Sept. Her 3 novels – 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, & 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘺 – are vivid & humorous accounts of Scottish society. Often compared to her contemporary #JaneAusten, Ferrier’s satires are much more vicious…

ROMANTIC MEDIA AND WARTIME NETWORKS, my first monograph, is out today with @stanfordpress.bsky.social. It tells the story of how the state revolutionized its wartime communication networks in the Romantic period and how writers responded to - and resisted - this media revolution.
We asked our Executive Committee members what IASSL means for them. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing their answers. Follow the link below to learn more about them: scotlit-iassl.org/about/the-ex...

A really interesting and intellectually stimulating day at Romantic Retrospection online, following up the excellent in-person days in Birmingham last week. Congratulations and many thanks to the organisers for a smart, well-run, inclusive and convivial @bars.bsky.social conference.
some #bars2026 highlights, as promised.
Overall, an incredible conference. In general, everyone was so kind & generous with their time & conversation.
Despite a precarious job market, ECR work was the highest standard I've witnessed, & there was a deep, comforting community spirit amongst us.
Last week also marked the end of my tenure on the BARS Exec (@bars.bsky.social), first as PGR (2022-24) and then ECR Officer (2024-26). These roles were a highlight of (and outlasted) my PhD, offering essential experience in conference organisation (tbt #BARS2023), mentoring, networking, and more /1
Huge thanks to my fellow Exec members for their friendship, collegiality, and kind send-off at last week’s AGM - and best of luck to the incoming BARS PGR & ECR team whom I know will do a fantastic job in taking these roles in exciting new directions! @bars-ecrs-pgrs.bsky.social@bars.bsky.social /2
Fabulous few days in Birmingham for #BARS2026 (in person) with friends old and new. So many fantastic panels and a pleasure to present research from my new project on Bentley’s Standard Novels. Thanks to all who came along and offered feedback. Roll on next Thursday for the online day!
Conference week is in full swing!
A fun 48 hours in Liverpool for #BAVS2026 and shortly onto Birmingham for #BARS2026…
