Mostly nonsense about the Raptors, stats and NBA salary cap.

Best to be careful with Kawhi, main thing is health for the playoffs. So makes sense. Heck, based on that Wolves game the rest of the team needs time to sort some stuff out sans Kawhi anyway.

Sucks to be RJ, JaKobe, and Graves, who actually showed up, unlike every single other player on the team. Worst I’ve ever seen of Scottie. Jak was brutal, IQ was brutal, CMB was a no show. This was going to be a tough test with Kawhi, nevermind if half the roster barely shows up. Awful effort.

Couldn’t buy a three to save our lives (and they were mostly good looks I thought), played 5 on 8 most of the night, half the roster in foul trouble, still a double digit win. Really impressive stuff. Great game from RJ. Scottie was real star like. Kawhi woke up for like 2 minutes to close it out.

Some truly wacky lineup decisions from Darko in this one. Went with a Jak, CMB, RJ, Shead combo mid-4th, which is way too little shooting. Put Scottie in similar looks with some of his bench groups. Played super small for a stretch. Used Shead in for IQ with the starters (should be JaKobe).

Can’t say enough about CMB’s impact off the bench. He and JaKobe are a devastating gear shift once the starters start taking rests. Battle played too much, was clear in the first half this was not his matchup. Weird that Graves disappeared after a strong first half, I thought.

CMB is a GAME CHANGING defender. I hate these refs for depriving us of so much of his time this game. Biggest reason it is still close is the Raps having to work without him so much.

Shead calling for that review and losing, if I was Darko, would mean his asks for reviews are going to be ignored for like 10 games at least. That said, made no sense to challenge that. Challenges should be for end of game or critical fouls on guys in foul trouble.

Really strong effort that half. Dealing with foul trouble (to such key guys), playing 5 on 8 a bit, and still holding them off. Battle was looking more like the specialist 11th guy again, some perimeter matchups he just can't be out there. Jak kicking butt. RJ has been really good on both ends.

I mean there have been stretches of easing up since the end of the first, but such is life when the game is like this. Hard to win the effort battle when everyone in the arena knows you don’t have to try to win.

I thought there were an interesting mix of lineup choices thus far. IQ in with the Scottie bench, I love. Having a no-Scottie, no-Kawhi lineup I don't (they crushed the Bulls though so what do I know). If that sort of lineup works consistently the rotation becomes really easy.

Pretty fun preseason game! Obviously not exactly real competition but lots of objectively good stuff from basically everyone. So good to watch Kawhi again, found myself just cackling several times in the first half.

TJD’s big concern is finishing and boy he looked pretty good on that front in this one. Again, competition, but glad to see the ball going in for him, could be some valuable injury insurance this year.

Oh and those threes CMB stepped into above the break were crazy. Between those and JaKobe getting nothing but net all night, feeling slightly optimistic re: floor spacing with those bench groups.

Things of note: the one lineup I thought didn’t pop as expected was the presumed closing lineup with CMB at center. Felt small, weren’t locked in defensively. But the game was out of hand at that point so hard to judge. Graves had a lot of rookie moments but loved the activity and quick trigger.

Yeah this is good stuff. Impactful rotation player at a very reasonable price. Also clarifies any discussions with RJ, fewer moving pieces now.

Important early work here for the Raptors ahead of a pretty tough cap/apron crunch in future years. Shead locked in well below the mid-level is a smart bet on his continued growth.

Curious to see how they structured this. Since this is well below the league average salary, there are no concerns there, but they have the option to structure it with 8% raises, in which case Shead can't be traded for 6 months, or 5% raises, in which case he can be traded anytime.

Also I've seen suggestions there is an option year. I'd be fine with a player option at this price, a team option would be a heck of a steal for the Raps, in my opinion.

9M below his max extension (about 4.5M each year assuming max raises), in return for a player option (which maybe means he does rolling opt-outs and re-signs depending on how his game ages). Helpful! I was certainly expecting the maximum.

Just in: Toronto Raptors All-NBA star Kawhi Leonard has agreed on a two-year, $115 million contract extension with the franchise, plus a player option for the 2028-29 season, his agent Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports tells ESPN.

Assuming for now it is a 56.1M salary next year, and a 58.9M player option the year after. His max next year was only 60.4M instead of 61.5M due to extend and trade rules limiting raises to 20%, but still a nice middle ground.

Yeah, pretty sure he wasn't eligible for the 2nd round pick exception since they already signed him to a two-way deal (and so no longer had his draft rights).

Blake Murphy@blakemurphy.bsky.social

Bradley's deal is guaranteed in Year 1. Non-guaranteed in Years 2 and 3, with an early guarantee trigger date. Team option in Year 4. Deal uses part of the mid-level, NOT 2nd-round pick exception.

As expected. Pretty much necessary, cap wise.

Michael Scotto@mikeascotto.bsky.social

The Toronto Raptors converted rookie two-way guard Jaden Bradley to a four-year, $9.3 million deal, league sources told HoopsHype. This first year of the deal is guaranteed. Bradley was the 50th pick of the 2026 NBA Draft out of Arizona, where he was the Big 12 Player of the Year.

I'll be curious what their approach is. The max allowed two weeks at 13 doesn't really buy them anything, last I did the math - still stuck with Bradley as the 14th guy at that point, can't fit a pro-rated vet minimum (~100k short) even after two weeks. And can't do the 10-day dance until January.

Blake Murphy@blakemurphy.bsky.social

Raptors still have 2 camp spots open. Those probably go to Exhibit 10s, who can compete for 2-way spot (currently full) or be tabbed for Raptors 905. With Raptors likely starting season with 13 guys for 2 weeks, "go to 905 and wait/compete for call-up" an interesting camp offer.

Well, thank goodness that part's done. Training camp and pre-season will be much more fun with Kawhi officially in the fold, which I imagine will be announced shortly. No suspension is a very good outcome for the Raps and also means the deal goes through as agreed with no hiccups. Let's go.

Assuming Bradley gets the start, I’m excited to see him get another shot after a rough first two games. Playing with the better players may help him find his footing.

CMB and Martin remain out for summer league Raptors, and Chucky Hepburn is down today with knee soreness

With a 500k guarantee a year out that's a pretty solid bet that he's a roster player next year, even with other two ways maybe getting a promotion and a draftee coming in. Excited to see how he looks.

SalarySwish@salaryswish.bsky.social

The Toronto #Raptors have used the minimum salary exception to sign guard Alijah Martin to a 2 year contract. 2026-27: $2,185,116 2027-28: $2,571,895($500k Guaranteed only) www.salaryswish.com/players/alij...

Really liked what we saw from Graves in game 1. Just everywhere, involved in everything. Makes things happen. Thought he got up quick and showed finish at the rim, the jumper looked good. Rebounding nose is obvious.

Bradley less so, but I also think he was better than his outcomes. Got to a decent spot on the floor a decent amount but didn't convert, was active defensively but got called for fouls. Was also stuck out there with some guys who I did not enjoy watching at all. We'll see how the rest of SL goes.

Hmm, reading the CBA I don’t see a provision where they can suspend Kawhi for this Aspiration stuff. Whether they deem it a section 1 or 2 violation. They can fine him a tiny amount, and they can void his contract, and they can do all sorts of stuff to the Clips.

Secondly, suspended player salaries do not get 50% taken off for hard caps purposes. That’s just for tax calculations. So even if the NBA managed to suspend Kawhi somehow, the Raps would be even more screwed with the hard cap (since they’d be without Kawhi).

The danger they seem to be looking to avoid is Kawhi’s contract getting voided. But as far as I can tell the actual punishment is just up to Silver, so I can’t see why he would do that if the Raps had traded for the guy.

Ohhhh bring me JV as a backup C at the minimum to let the Raps rest Jak more. He deserves to come back and try to win a chip here, he was a huge part of that first chip season success before being traded for Gasol.

Shams Charania Tweets@shamsbot.bsky.social

The Denver Nuggets are waiving veteran center Jonas Valanciunas, sources tell ESPN. Valanciunas is expected to receive interest from multiple NBA teams.

"Start extension talks" is hilarious and obviously very important framing to his new agent.

Shams Charania Tweets@shamsbot.bsky.social

Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors are expected to start extension talks this week -- and the two-time Finals MVP will do so with new representation. Leonard has hired Harrison Gaines, Esq. of SLASH Sports as his new agent. ESPN Story:

Thanks to Blake who did some legwork here. So, with Martin counting as a two year vet like I thought, Raps currently don’t have hard cap room for 14 guys. So maybe they just signed Bradley to a two way to keep flexibility over the summer and will give him an NBA deal if no more trades materialize.

Blake Murphy@blakemurphy.bsky.social

He's 2.45, I seem to have Mandela Effected a "your 2RP minimum advantage carries over after a 2-way." However, I will now be pitching The Alijah Martin Rule, because I think it makes sense!

I'm a little baffled how they are going to fit another veteran minimum under the hard cap. Either some salary or incentive number I have is wrong, or some cap rule is applied differently than I thought (this is possible and I'd love some clarity if so), or there are more trades coming.

It’s possible they are just keeping their options open. They can always upgrade Bradley to a minimum deal if they so choose later in the summer if no additional trades free up space.

Very cool. Lotta good vibes right now.

Josh Lewenberg@jlewenberg.bsky.social

Can confirm @michaelgrangenba.bsky.social’s report: Kyle Lowry will sign a one-day contract with Toronto next week and retire as a member of the Raptors, with his jersey retirement planned for the upcoming season.

Great pickup as veteran depth in case Graves is not quite ready out of camp, or for times when Scottie or Kawhi miss time and we need size on the wing.

Shams Charania Tweets@shamsbot.bsky.social

Free agent forward Kyle Anderson has agreed to a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the Toronto Raptors, sources tell ESPN. Anderson enters his 13th NBA season providing depth to the Raptors roster, and reunites with former San Antonio teammate Kawhi Leonard.

Makes sense, and as expected. Since he has a year under his belt, this should end with full Bird Rights and RFA status.

Blake Murphy@blakemurphy.bsky.social

This is a two-year minimum, so easy one for the Raptors to manoeuvre. Second year is only partially guaranteed, per a source.

You know, I’ve misunderstood the 2nd round pick exception until today when someone pointed out some CBA wording I’d missed. You can use it to offer a simple minimum salary, you don’t have to give the first year raise. That’s just an option you have. Greatly improves the value of the exception.

Previously I’ve always set aside part of the MLE or tax MLE to be able to sign 2nd rounders because a tax or apron team gets a lot of value out of their rookie minimum salary, but to offer three years you can’t use the minimum salary exception. But the 2nd rd pick exception can do it all! Cool.
