On the subject of Maxis games, and I'm planning to write a blog post about this, eventually, but this week I started on a script to extract the terrain layout from SimCity Classic, and convert it to TMX, which is an XML format that Tiled can read, /

At the same time, I wanted to tackle Sim Farm, which as far as I know only has a 16-bit implementation for Windows 3.1, But digging through the files I managed to find the asset pack or tile set data for the game, and it's in a PK zip format, which is password protected,

the file I'm referring to is called SIMFARM.VTI, Just the idea of the tile set data being in plain sight all these years but is password protected is utterly insane but now I'm on a bit of a pilgrimage to try and crack it...

One of the breakthroughs I had was when I realised I could just use a plain old resource editor to extract the SimCity Classic tile set graphics from the 32-bit version, and the whole process wasn't that hard once I discovered the offset for the terrain and map entities, /

It's probably most likely down to some gross inaccuracy that required the video to be pulled, but I hadn't even finished my @TechLinkedYT.twitter.com and the screen went blank then the video was privated. Just pretty gnarly how instantaneously that is on YouTube now...

This just becomes a normal practise when trying to buy stuff in Australia, you go to a local retailer's website, and the first thing you do is turn off Marketplace because if you don't have it in your store, in stock, I do not care. But, My God, Big W really wants me to use their marketplace...

I love how there is a fix for that bug in Windows 10 where if you update and shut down your PC it restarts it instead, and the fix for that is to use Windows 11, and every time I encounter this bug I just shake my head.

I completely forgot about the new look of Firefox until I came into work and was forced to restart my PC to get my Bluetooth headphones working....

I hate when I'm using Firefox and it updates and then it looks different because I like things looking the same.

I love that about:config was meant to be one of those things that you should never touch, because logic would dictate they would put buttons on the UI to turn off unwanted features but here we are, think I'm in there every other day tinkering with it,

Why does Reddit do this? I get that the OP probably shouldn't have said "fucking" but if you're gonna be the first result on Google be useful, I'm coming here for help, and the moderator removed the post the stupid prick...

I had to update my graphics drivers for my NVIDIA card and like a fuckwit I use the GeForce experience app because I was too lazy to download the drivers manually off the Internet, /

Fortunately, I just needed to uninstall NVIDIA app bullshit, and it seems to have gone away but I've kept the graphics driver, and I have learnt my lesson I will only ever do manual updates from now on.

then this morning I turned my computer on and then there's a different pop up and it's for some other game that I haven't played yet or I don’t care about and it's a rewards program thing that I've accidentally signed up for, like I have completely fucked up my computer, /

and the GeForce experience had to be updated or upgraded or some forced arbitration clause that I didn't read because no one ever fucking reads those, the GPU driver was updated and the game I was playing stopped crashing, cool, /

but not ten seconds into it NVIDIA app gives me a pop up for some rewards program bullshit I don't care about I don't give a fuck about world of tanks, so I told it to fuck off, /

Finally, someone other than me doing NT kernel evangelism!

LaurieWired@lauriewired.bsky.social

Say what you will about Windows (OS), but the NT kernel really is an engineering marvel that still puts Linux to shame in many ways. The quickest way to describe it for a programmer, is NT was more like an object-oriented language, with a strong security model from day one, whereas Linux is…not.
