This article is absurd on its face. If only 7% of risk were retired, Starlink satellites would be colliding each other every 3 days. But in years of operation, no two Starlink satellites have ever collided, or have even had a close call. The empirical risk reduction is not 7%, nor 93%, but 99.9999%.

"In other words, when it comes to avoiding accidents in space, rather than evidence of effective stewardship, so far most of it comes down to luck." Thought-provoking op-ed from @comspoc.bsky.social's Dan Oltrogge breakingdefense.com/2026/08/the-...

After deploying two Lunar landers in 2025, the rocket was in an elliptical orbit that is chaotic/unpredictable beyond a few months. Statistically, ~45% chance to hit Earth (reentering/disintegrating harmlessly), ~15% moon, ~40% neither (escape earth/moon system). This one happened to hit the moon.

While the Fields Medal celebrates the under-40s, the mathematician Joan Birman has, at the age of 99, solved a major open problem in representations of the Braid groups, a topic she has worked on for more than 60 years.

Multiple swimmers rescued by Los Angeles County Lifeguards moments ago off Venice Pier. Craziest rip current I can recall in over a decade of living in the area. Absolute heroes!!! ❤️💪 Video of the intense rip and rescues in thread 🧵 👇

This summary is a bit misleading, because it implies that adding alkalinity can’t fix the problem. Instead, the paper only shows that a high initial concentration is what causes the precipitation. If the added alkalinity is properly diluted before distribution, it should still be effective.

People think Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) is a promising CO₂ removal method because in ocean models, we just magically increase alkalinity with no consequences. In reality, excessive alkalinity addition can lead to calcium carbonate precipitation, drastically reducing OAE efficiency. 🌊🧪

I keep seeing this, and it is tremendously misleading. The SpaceX constellation will be in sun-synchronous orbit, so it will never be visible at nighttime, only at dawn-dusk, and even then only to telescopes. It is a problem for astronomy, and aluminum is a real concern, but not nighttime views.

If you’re roughly my age, it’s wild to reflect on the optimism for the future Americans felt when Obama was elected — young Americans spontaneously took to the streets to celebrate! — and contrast with what we face today. The falloff over the past 18 years is hard to process.
