Steam keeps recommending me this game and because my music taste is bad I can't look at it without thinking "yeah, I've been listening to a lot of post-girl lately."

Using more recent examples, I joked to my partner that this has been the year of rhythm games that make me cry because the final chapter of Unbeatable and chapter 5 of Rhythm Doctor both got my ass.

I wasn't prepared for what is arguably the first and only fandom I ever engaged with to get hit with it's own "secret good episode" conspiracy ten years after it's last installment. It's like finding out an old friend you thought had died is actually alive but has leprosy.

I really only know the series by reputation (I have seen two segments out of context and that's it) but when I hear about new V/H/S movies they sound increasingly like the sort of holiday tradition that's more obligation than anything folks look forward to.

If you don't like a movie and see it playing, it still feels like a movie. If you don't like a book, trying to read it is a chore but it's still a book. But listening to a podcast you don't like registers the same way as a cordless drill jammed into your earhole.

Had the pleasure of hearing a version of this essay (via recording) as a preface to a showing of Silence of the Lambs last year, very much recommend reading it!

The essay that we wrote on THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS for Criterion's 4k release is now online. This is a piece about Jame Gumb that addresses how the transgender perception of the character was formed. criterion-v2.herokuapp.com/current/post...

Question: if you were to give a presentation on some of the video game industry's weirdest moments to a group of largely non-gamers, which ones would you pick and why?

Started a few next fest demos but damn, none of them have clicked for me. Some are even for games/projects I was looking forward to, so I guess it's been good in terms of cleaning up the wish list?

Maybe the Amazon Carrie series is good but the moment they revealed that an evil physic cult was involved I said "Oh fuck this" and shut it off so I guess I'll never know.

I really enjoy Mike Flanagan's work and this doesn't diminish that, also stretching one of Stephen King's shortest and simplest stories into a miniseries was always going to be an uphill battle. But "surprise, there are goth X-Men" just sucks as a way to expand it.

Playing Silent Hill PSX has confirmed my long held belief that allowing a player to get actually lost so they need to figure out where objectives are and how to get to them is more important to immersion that visual fidelity.

I like it's map system a lot. If Harry knows where a thing is, you get a map marker telling you to go there. If he doesn't, you don't. There are only so many places to be and streets to explore, you'll figure it out.

As the game goes on and you get used to this rhythm, you get less explicit upfront directions. Here's a key with a number on it, the kind you may recognize as the sort they have at motels. The map has a motel you haven't yet explored. You can do this, you don't need an updated journal entry.

Rolled credits on all three endings and I'm still unsure if Silver Pines is excellent on it's own merits or just a solid survival horror game that happens to draw so much influence from all my favorite things. Like I loved it but also kind of felt myself Dicaprio pointing at all the Lynch homages.

Hauntsune Michael@decoster.bsky.social

The punchline, almost two years after the fact, is that Silver Pines is pretty much exactly this and I've spent the long weekend either playing it or wishing I was playing it. I'm the world's easiest mark; give me a Twin Peaks sliding block puzzle and it would probably make my end-of-year top 5.

I've seen a lot of Signalis comparisons (i.e. indie survival horror games with clear Silent Hill 2 DNA) but, to me, the difference is Signalis was taking influence from a ton of disparate sources. Whereas Silver Pines is drawing from a much smaller reference pool (Twin Peaks, Alan Wake, Angel Heart)

So I'm not too sour on a game I really enjoyed, I love how doesn't explain the broad strokes of what's going on, it just throws up creative imagery with screamingly obvious subtext and trusts you to put it together. Secret ending maybe plays it a little louder for the cheap seats but, eh, whatever.

I think the secret to a good "four pieces of media to know me/that inspired my latest project" post is that they all have to be really different to be interesting. So many of them are just "Twin Peaks House of Leaves Alan Wake." Same words in a different font. You need some genre variation.

I use Amazon very sparingly (basically when someone gives me a gift card) and mine was like "repairs electronics, reads contemporary fiction, and prefers physical media to digital." Amazon must think I'm the least fun person to talk with at a party

Dexerto@dexerto.bsky.social

Amazon users are discovering a bizarre "About You" page that reveals what the company thinks it knows about them One woman found Amazon had determined she "has flat buttocks"

Been doing this thing where, when a coworkers suggests a book or movie to me, I go check it out. Now my life is full of great art I wouldn't have found on my own and people to enthusiastically discuss it with. I also have a lot less time for the stuff already on my list but hey, can't win 'em all.

📦 We've got a new version of the itch app for you today! You can now manage collections directly in app. Also Steam Shortcuts feature has been enhanced, with Proton support for Windows games on Linux. Check it out: itch.io/updates/itch...

I think Rhythm Doctor rewired something within my brain because before I was basically incapable of playing any rhythm game on any difficulty and now I gotta bump them up to at least hard to have any fun. First two hours did feel like banging my head into a wall though.

Every time I see a AAA game riding this it's like, why bother when you're missing the actual physical stimulation that leads people do either of those things. You press the contextual button in front of the white powder and now the screen is a funny color. Cool.

I become more convinced of GTA 6's juicelessness with every new article "You can do drugs" "You can have sex" You mean like in every other game? Is this really the best they've got?

"But people like seeing naked people" yes but this is a AAA video game being sold at Target, you're going to get less boob than an episode of Game of Thrones and a level of eroticism somewhere around "we can keep the lights on if you want."

Everyone needs to go see Appofeniacs if it's playing near you. It is very bad, but in that way where it's indifference towards conventional rules of storytelling allow it to be genuinely shocking the whole way through. Each scene ends the way a Goosebumps chapter ends.

Happy #LetterboxdFriday! Time to post your #LastFourWatched 📲

I had jury duty last year and the only part that wasn't sad or boring was the guy who spoke in near-constant Jim Carrey quotes, who got kicked out day one for shouting at the bailiff. And he was mostly just confusing.

I’ve been doing jury duty all week it’s like twelve angry men except everyone is very sad and it’s not like the movie at all

I think we underrate that JCO came up in 20th century New York literary circles where everyone said five most devastating insults before breakfast and as one of the last one standing, her competition is guys who get sad if their chatbot isn't sufficiently nice to them.

"Oh, you're challenging me to a fight?" I slowly strip off my shirt, revealing a full yakuza style back tattoo of a possum screaming. I fall to the ground and stop moving until you leave.

Happy bi visibility day, last year I saw Hozier at Fenway and the crowd was 90% women in flowing ethereal dresses and 10% dudes with mullets.

"Whoa, your girlfriend is bi? Heh, I know what that means..." Yup, three folk concerts this year.
