Many years ago, I watched Practical Magic in the movie theater as a kid. I couldn't remember the title, but it was terrifying to me at the time and left an impression. Due to press about the upcoming movie sequel, I found out the title and found that it was adapted from a book. Now I'm reading it.

@chessmensch.bsky.social I made a "do something" move when I should have just chilled in an OTB game last night. Even though my King had an escape square, I got really scared by a diagonal Queen-Bishop battery my opponent had. I thought I needed to give up a Rook to shut down the threat and survive.

I'm maxed out on donations until early June, and I have my platelets appointment for when I'm eligible again :) I really wish we could get a few more regular donors so there wouldn't be shortages almost all the time. Donating blood is fun and easy.

Donating platelets is easy and I have done it 14 times in the past year. Please donate if you can!

⚠️ We need to be honest β€” we’re at just 82% of the platelets needed for patients right now. That 18% gap means cancer patients and others could face delayed care. If you’re eligible, now is the time: bit.ly/4sUZOm9 πŸ” Share this post to help spread the word.

The guide to pigeons is a quick read, but it is surprisingly deep for a "pocket guide" written by an author known for their webcomics. I was surprised at how many pages of text there are with just small illustrations. Wild, domesticated, or feral, they have so much more going on than I thought.

Sons & Daughters is not religious, but the tone is somewhat reverent. It's a love letter to Jewish life in pre-war Poland, and a tale of parents trying to preserve their legacy in their children, who are pulled in many different directions by the modern world.

Sometimes, @chess.com is really stingy with !! . For this move though, I don't think it is deserved at all? Capturing a pawn with discovered attack on the Queen seems like a basic tactic to me, and not a hard one to find. Other moves that I was more proud of get ! Or βœ…

600-ish rated blitz on chesscom can have some funny moments. White moves Qb2, defending the back rank against a checkmate in 2 Black moves a knight to a more central square Ne4. White captures the knight, and resigns after Qc1.

I have gotten tired of AI generated content being the top result of most Google searches, and I have set my default search engine to DuckDuckGo. On mobile, I also set the DuckDuckGo browser as my default, instead of Chrome (mostly so I could have the search widget on my home screen).

Inspired by this book, my 6 year old son has been asking me about Chocolate Covered Everything Day, and asking to try "chocolate covered chocolate". Well, on Monday 12/16, we are going to have fondue desert after dinner, and we are inviting some classmates to celebrate with us.

I had my first negative interaction on Bluesky today. I replied to a stranger's post, ambling into something I misunderstood. The post was a screenshot of a tweet sharing a comic. I thought the poster was commenting on the comic, but they were actually commenting on the tweet. Stranger was furious.

Is there an effective way to block reposted images from my feed? I'm not really interested in seeing the same "Fuck Trump" image again (not that I have any problem with the sentiment) There's a few other common images that keep popping up too.
