Today in D.C. politics mascots: @chenderson.bsky.social with Remy from “Ratatouille” (for a bill she wrote to improve how the city fights rats), and an otter advocating for @brianneknadeau.bsky.social’s 10-cent bottle-deposit bill. Who says local news isn’t fun?

@repoyedc.bsky.social is on Politics Hour with @nnamdikid.bsky.social for the first time! And it's sad to see @alexkoma.bsky.social go--wishing you the best and thanks for all you have done for local reporting in DC. wamu.org/story/26/07/...
This is why DC proposed the REMY Act! Unintended victims are harming biodiversity and wild animals, pets...even children in the District.
Anticoagulant rodenticides, a type of rat poison, cause a prolonged, agonizing death by internal bleeding—and tragically, this squirrel is not the only one to suffer this fate in DC. Wildlife, pets, and even children are regularly exposed to these poisons.

A big thank you to Christina Henderson @chenderson.bsky.social for introducing this bill alongside Charles Allen, Janeese Lewis George, Matt Frumin, and Brooke Pinto. Read more about the REMY Act in our latest blog: www.dcvfa.com/blog/dc-intr...
Fast facts: - 2,000+ children under 6 ingest rat poison every year - A pet that eats rat poison can lead to $5,000+ in veterinary bills, without certainty of survival - A study by @dccitywildlife.bsky.social tested animals who were admitted for rehab for rodenticide. 85% of them tested positive!
Thank you @chenderson.bsky.social! This bill gets at SYSTEMIC solutions to manage rats while making our neighborhoods safer. As we say in DC Responsible Rat Management #PreventionNotPoison
🐀 NEWS: @chenderson.bsky.social has a new bill (titled the REMY Act, after the main character in "Ratatouille") that would create a pilot program to bring rodent-free dumpsters to commercial areas and require certification for the use of rodenticides, which can harm kids and pets.

@kenyanmcduffie.bsky.social “I will direct my administration to expand the Good Food Purchasing Program across DC agencies that serve food…I will establish clear agency procurement targets and a public reporting dashboard so residents can see whether we are meeting our commitments.”
@janeese4dc.bsky.social “I will expand Good Food Purchasing Program standards beyond DCPS so that more District agencies align their food procurement with those values over time…I will develop a reporting system to transparently document where DC gets its food and the quality of that food.”
@garygoodweather.bsky.social “I support expanding the DC Good Food Purchasing Program citywide…I would use the District’s purchasing power to prioritize contracts with local and community rooted businesses, including minority owned vendors, while building pipelines for workforce development."
The DC Good Food Purchasing Program (DC GFPP) is a coalition working with DC Public Schools on values-based procurement. @dcpublicschools.bsky.social has done impressive work: more plant-forward meals, reduced food waste, and sourcing from local farms — among much more.
