Can less cognitive control help us learn? I'm excited to share our new Cell Reports paper. Using inhibitory rTMS in 95 adults, we found that inhibiting the right DLPFC—or both sides—improved learning of hidden statistical patterns. Inhibiting the left alone did not. www.cell.com/cell-reports...

The findings suggest that this region constr...

1/ Three years later... PyVBMC 1.5 is out! With A LOT of improvements, dear Bayesians. We also made a 3-min video on how it works. Come for my beautifully resonant voice (you deserve the real deal rather than an AI one), stay for all the goodies below.

Congratulations!

New preprint: When should you use linear mixed models (LMMs), and when is repeated-measures (RM) ANOVA enough? LMMs offer greater flexibility. But does that make them a better default? My paper argues for statistical parsimony: use RM-ANOVA when both methods are appropriate. osf.io/preprints/ps...

2 yrs ago, I briefly laid out a new theory of how motivation works (AGH). Here, I expand on the problems AGH was trying to solve, why they are hard to solve, what my solution looks like, and how this should change our understanding of thoughts & actions. osf.io/preprints/ps... 🧵A few highlights:

New preprint! We (among others) have shown that the forced-response task is a promising way to study habits in the human lab. But its increasingly popular use is associated by increasing variability in task parameters and data analysis options, creating a potential “garden of forking paths"...

Long story short, the multi-verse shows that the forced-response task is very little affected by particular decisions made by the researcher. Thus, more good news for the forced-response aficionados! Anyway, it'd be great if we all use the same task and analysis parameters :-) osf.io/preprints/ps...

#introduction I'm currently a staff scientist at Washington U in St Louis (USA), but (late 2026, early 2027) looking for a new position. I'm a big fan of task #fMRI, #BIDS, #baseR #Rstats (incl. graphics) and #knitr, #QC, and papers with very extensive #supplementary materials, but not AI.

The current system is completely dead. I hope the EU do something. It is already too late.

This ridiculous number of applications is, in my view, the result of 2 nightmare developments happening concurrently 1.the precariousness of the job market for young PhD graduates which then fuels further: 2.the AI tools enabling overproduction of proposals. #Research #ERC #ResearchFunding #Academia

This is an *excellent* post on cluster analysis. If you ever thought about applying cluster, latent class or latent profile analysis to psychological scales, you absolutely should read this!>

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

This is too bad (OSF was too good to be true I guess). Science people, what are the alternatives to OSF for uploading and making public data and materials? Uni repository is, at least in Málaga, not ideal. Any file needs to be approved by admin staff what is that time consuming

Brian Nosek@briannosek.bsky.social

Over the next several months, we will phase out some popular OSF features. These changes do not affect current public content, which remains safe and accessible. We have prepared support material to help users adapt. I am very sorry for the disruption to your work. Please read this post for details.

New preprint! Habits should get stronger with more practice, right? Well, this crucial result has been difficult to reproduce in human labs. In an instant classic, de Wit (2018) showed 5 failures in obtaining more evidence of habits in conditions with more training -as compared to little trained

Message for government. It's great that you are improving pre and postdoc fellowships, and increasing the number of them. But uni staff are buried in teaching and admin work. We've known that socioeconomics (SES) matters for the 🧠. New & 🤯 is that SES drowns out all other brain associations, incl. IQ. If you train an algorithm to predict IQ from brain data, it's still way better at predicting SES. Science Mag: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... @smarek0502.bsky.social 👀🧵👇

What matters most for childhood brain organization? We analyzed 649 variables. The answer: Socioeconomics (SES); with brain patterns pointing at sleep & stress as drivers. Even brain-IQ associations were better explained by SES. In Science today: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
