I replied and tagged page hosts - the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association - if they normally allow antisemitic comments and their page and for some reason they have not replied or taken down the comment.

David Shere@davidshere.net

This is an antisemitic comment, right? Am I making that up?

Does anyone have or has anyone seen a write up on ways that things will actually get better if RTM passes? I know the point isn’t building a world class transit system, it’s to stave off collapse, but I know I’ve heard folks say that some things will actually improve.

Family logistics are now such that I have to start parking at BART and whoops entire politics have changed, you can take my parking when you pry it from my cold dead hands, won’t someone think of the eggplants or avocados or whatever the hell people grow, neighbors not towers, argue bargle bargle

It's important to understand the mechanisms here. Taxes on new homes mean the market rate units need to have correspondingly higher rents in order to pencil. These buildings don't get built *until* rents rise to that level. The lack of building drives up the market rate that *everyone* pays.

California YIMBY@cayimby.bsky.social

Inclusionary zoning cuts housing construction by as much as a third, argues a PRI commentary citing a July UC Irvine study. Builders must set aside homes or pay a fee, which raises project costs and makes fewer projects pencil out. www.pacificresearch.org/inclusionary...

Once again, *all* market rents rise until they're high enough to make new buildings pencil. These taxes aren't paid by developers. They don't reduce the profits that developers make. That is a comforting fantasy that people who oppose housing development tell themselves.

Hard for me to understand this because what is the point of a document that the person whose name is on the document didn’t read or understand? What value has been added?

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Going back to the Reddit post I shared earlier, this is part of why junior hiring in tech is collapsing. Why hire someone junior to do work that a senior employee using Claude can complete faster and often better? It’s short-sighted, but this is how many tech companies are thinking today.

Not that I expect this but nightmare scenario is Ds get 60+ for 29, eliminates pressure to kill the filibuster but we still get little done because now you need 100% of the caucus for anything rather than having votes to spare.

This reads like once the horses are free they’re going to massacre the owners in the absence of state intervention.

The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City. Our administration will make sure workers and owners are protected and the horses are safe.

One thing I love about the AI era is that the quality bar has collapsed so far that people are like “thank you for actually writing this document yourself.” It’s amazing, just free plaudits right there on the ground for the taking.

Does anyone happen to have a shapefile around for recent/current/future housing development projects in Berkeley? Or one for racially concentrated areas of affluence?

A lot of people hate this Drive Slower and Pay More Attention stuff, but we really underrate the biggest benefit to drivers - it makes it much much less likely that you’re going to kill someone on your way home from the grocery store! Of course no one thinks they’re going be the one to kill…

This post is unavailable.

someone, just like no one thinks they’re going to be the one to get killed. So they don’t experience the psychic benefit whenever they get in the car. Maybe I’m just built different but every time I get in the car as I’m backing out of the driveway I think “really hope I don’t kill someone today”

I don’t know what you do when people look at safe cycling infrastructure and say “this isn’t safe.” It’s not exactly a lie, it’s just they don’t want to make the trade offs that safe streets require, but they don’t want to see themselves as being opposed to safety, therefore it must not be safe.

OB Cycler@obcycler.bsky.social

Glasgow, A famously flat place with perfect bike weather /s All the reasons non-riders give for why biking can't work are BS. The only thing that matters is safe infrastructure.

I don’t understand being frightened of concrete protected lanes as a person on a bicycle, but I accept that some people are. The idea that because *you* don’t want to use it, that the people begging for it shouldn’t have it - that I can’t accept.

Chatted with some normal non political Berkeley people and it is WILD to me the way people will say we want leaders who look at the facts, who focus on results, who aren’t beholden to this interest group or that and then when someone actually is that in their core, they hate hate hate that person.

I don’t expect people to look at politicians as people or to understand their behavior as often determined more by structural factors than individual virtues or vices but come ON guys, like, maybe the interest groups emailing you to get you whipped up over their issues are the actually the bad guys.

You can tell what a wild, frankly unreal accomplishment this is by the number of very famous, talented singers who record this song at half speed.

Sure is a problem that we’ve allowed the most broken, truly shattered, empty husks of men to amass immeasurable power.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

A growing number of conservative books are arguing about the harms of empathy in political decision making, offering “a theoretical framework for selfishness,” Elizabeth Bruenig argues.

It’s sort of funny that the progressive desire to ameliorate historic injustices gets confused with empathy, when in reality if you spend much time in progressive spaces you see that having that kind of politics and having pro social traits like empathy (or basic respect) are really not correlated.

Completely false. I bought my house 40 years ago for $80,000, I could never afford this $600,000 condo, ergo it is luxury housing for people I don’t like. What is my house worth today? I don’t see how that is relevant and frankly it’s a pretty rude question for you to even ask.

Joe Fish@sadbusdriver.bsky.social

the thing with luxury condos is that they're mostly a myth. 1. within the same county, condos sell for 35% less than single family homes 2. within the same neighborhood, they sell for 43% less 3. within the same neighborhood and adjusting for some quality characteristics, they sell for 21% less

Who needs a volcano when you have Neighborhood and Landmark Preservation Ordinances?

Ryan North@ryannorth.ca

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Winning a governor’s race in Georgia would be humongous because it means you can nominate one of their senators for (V)POTUS without the fear that they’re irreplaceable and you’re giving up a Senate seat.

Safe streets are a *core* function of government along with police, fire, and street paving. Some things are more peripheral but safe streets are not deferrable or only for when times are good - they are urgent and essential, now.

Letter to the Editor: Bike lanes, while important to some, shouldn’t top our list of things to tackle in a city where it’s cold six months a year. It’s just not a priority.

The problem with this here is that it reinforces the mistaken belief that there are easy solutions to our problems but corrupt, greedy politicians stand in the way. Can’t speak to Seattle but I don’t think we can generalize from Zohran’s “delay pension contributions” and “get a state bailout” plan.

Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ@padresj.bsky.social

It's strange how Democratic Socialists - who are being denounced by both parties - turned major deficits into balanced budgets in both New York and Seattle.

Been in San Diego for a good few days now and if my Evelyn NormieDem-ass family is any indication the prospects for the e-bike revolution to wash over this town are depressingly slim.

I'm at this hospital in San Diego (everything is mostly fine) and every time a baby is born in the hospital they play a little nursery song over all the loudspeakers and every time I'm just 😍😍😍

So if AC Transit had to get rid of at large seats to go fully district based because of California civil rights law, would that also apply to the Rent Stabilization Board? Because if the Board moved from all at-large to all district based, that could have a big impact on how that agency operates.

Wha…what? What? This is the second time in just a few months that something has come out of the AC Transit board that makes clear they *really* do not give a shit about the Brown Act, and my thing is, does it actually have teeth? Because most ppl who are subject to it bend over backwards to comply.

George Spies@georgespies.bsky.social

Here's the insane letter signed by a majority of the Board, in a clear contravention of the Brown Act, in an attempt to defend a serial assaulter and overall negative influence on the Board. Again, as to why, see the above thread... bsky.app/profile/urbf...

A minimum population size for local government in general would solve literally hundreds of problems. Lots of cities should be annexed or disincorporated.

The right model here is a bring your own cloud thing where the vendor (forgive the jargon) owns the control plane and you own the data plane, so you don’t have to take anything on faith, you literally control and can accept or reject every request, because the data lives in your servers not theirs.
