A sorry tale from 1895.. Richard Solly was a #crystallographer, employed in Cambridge as assistant to the Professor of mineralogy, W J Lewis. In 1883, Solly was appointed Demonstrator in Mineralogy. In 1894, Solly published an introductory text book on mineralogy; he presented a copy to Lewis.. 1/2

‘with kind regards’. Lewis read this the book closely - annotating liberally throughout, pointing out errors and critiquing the writing. The next year, Solly left his university post. Solly’s obituary reports that he resigned his post, having published the book without Lewis’ permission 2/2

Delightful reason to vote for #Punisite for #MinCup26 ⚒️

This mineral was named after Christine and Andrew Putnis to honor their contribution to mineralogy. Both Andrew and Christine were working at the @uni-muenster.de when I studied Earth Sciences there. Andrew got me excited about mineralogy back when I was an undergraduate; 2/4 ⚒️ #MinCup26

Psst. The practice round where you get to predict the #MinCup26 winner should publish at 00:00 GMT. Will it? Who knows! But if it does, you should toss in a prediction to help ensure the backend is tallying correctly.

Happy (other) birthday to James Hutton, born on this day, 14th June 1726, in the calendar used in most of Europe at the time. During Hutton's life, Britain caught up by missing 11 days of 1752. Nice to be following in his footsteps today, exploring the granite boundary in northern hills of Arran.
