For all the ways that the Biden administration didn’t do enough in the wake of Trump 1, Joe personally and specifically hated Robert Bork—the guy who effectively broke antitrust law—and appointing Lina Khan to lead the FTC was his act of revenge against Bork’s legacy.

This post is unavailable.

This strikes me as being desperately embarrassing for all parties involved.

In the upcoming "The Kosmic Kruiser" episode, The Simpsons jabs at Disney World’s failed Galactic Starcruiser as Bart and Lisa break into Krustyland’s most notorious attraction. Bonus: YouTuber Jenny Nicholson guest stars. The episode airs on November 8th.

We saw this play out with the L.A. mayoral primaries as well. All these chuds who use these prediction markets initially bet on Spencer Pratt, but as soon as polling closed, his numbers cratered and Nithya quickly became favored to make the runoff.

Micah@rincewind.run

I find the prediction markets pretty much useless when it comes to “who is going to win” beforehand, because the sentiment is infected with the personal biases of the degen crypto sickos who participate what they are usually good at is doing math once the results start to come in

This is why I'm not actually on board with the whole Save Mass Effect thing. I deeply love ME but saying "please Saudi backed EA, now that you've destroyed the studio that made these games, farm out the IP to some one else to limp on in some barely recognizable zombie version" ain't it. Let it die

Hayes Madsen@solfleet.bsky.social

Does it need to be said that Mass Effect shouldn’t exist without the developers and team that was working on this game? Either they come back and make the game they were, or Mass Effect dies. kotaku.com/mass-effect-...

Just awful news.

Unbelievable loss. An amazing talent, and just a really, really good person. www.instagram.com/p/De8RFy4pyov/

I know there’s been an effort to reclaim THE BLACK CAULDRON, but the thing is it that it really does stink.

David Daut@davidmdaut.com

Packed Saturday. Went out canvassing for Nithya this morning, then caught a screening of WILDWOOD, now seated for THE BLACK CAULDRON on 35mm, and I have a ticket for CLAYFACE later.

I think maybe the best comparison for WILDWOOD is that is accomplishes for stop motion what Richard Williams tried (and ultimately failed) to do for hand drawn animation with THE THIEF AND THE COBBLER. An almost incomprehensible achievement, even if (like COBBLER), the story is a tad underbaked.

I’ve always been of two minds about the Mass Effect story returning to the Milky Way post-ME3. On one hand, nailing down definitively what happened in the aftermath of the Reaper war feels fraught, but on the other, there’s potentially rich story space to explore there. Now I guess we’ll never know!

Jason Schreier@jasonschreier.bsky.social

Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday www.reddit.com/r/masseffect...

(I maintain that while no version of the MASS EFFECT 3 ending feels great, the open ended ambiguity of the launch version is vastly better than how the extended cut tries to nail down a lot of specifics. I realize I’m in the minority with this opinion.)

In the midst of so much awfulness, it’d be nice if LAIKA manages to have a second movie that actually turns a profit.

ToonHive@toonhive.bsky.social

LAIKA’s ‘Wildwood’ is tracking a $15-20M domestic box office debut after a skyrocket of pre-sale tickets. This will potentially make LAIKA’s biggest opening weekend ever. (Source: @GlobalBoxOffice on X)

it's 2030, the new consoles are $1500, only six people own them, and the only games being made are Fortnite and Roblox. Nintendo has just released Kirby's Wonder Dream for the Switch 2 and it is game of the year by default

So you're great at rich narrative action games? Do open world! Also, use our weird custom engine! Make the next one a massive multiplayer subscription game instead!

Simone de Rochefort@doomquasar.bsky.social

this is 1000% EA's fault for killing these games by trying to force them to chase trends instead of being unique, distinct propreties www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Almost immediately after their acquisition, EA began the process of hollowing out BioWare, but it’s still a punch in the gut to see them actually shut down. It’s all just so bleak.

Finally gritted my teeth and went to sit through the four-hour Elon Musk documentary given the uncertainly around whether it will be viewable after it leaves theaters. Worth noting the film *does* have a baked-in intermission, if that makes a difference to you.

It’s well produced and thorough, but if you’re the kind of person who has a Bluesky account, it’s probably not going to reveal anything you aren’t already agonizingly aware of.

We’re deep in the heart of haunt season, and I have, like, half a dozen movies I need to catch up with, but I also kinda just want to see YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING three more times.

YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING. Holy shit. Genuinely one of the most staggering pieces of filmmaking I’ve ever seen. I do have one note regarding casting, but I’ll wait to elaborate on what that might mean.

it turns out that “optimize for engagement” and “optimize for societal best outcomes” are opposing goals and if you look at the entire history of the tech industry you can see which of those two wins out

Denny Carter@dennycarter.bsky.social

Facebook back in 2021 temporarily turned off the “drive people insane” setting and it completely changed what people were seeing. They turned it back on when engagement dipped by like 1 percent.

Did not actually intend to see DIGGER twice in three days, but somehow missed that The Grove of all theaters got an actual VistaVision print. It brings me no joy to say it, but I’m coming around to thinking this movie is good, actually. My brand will never recover from this.

i do not meaningfully care about this argument but my stance remains: i refuse to generate unpaid content for elon musk the child pornographer, and to model the behavior that lets elon's algorithm show me the optimal unpaid content he wants me to see. it's interesting that you want to do that though

This is a point that @jamellebouie.net has made, but if Dems win a majority in congress, it will be because voters are angry at the current administration and want them held accountable. Bowing to calls to “turn down the heat” will be a betrayal of the reason voters elected them.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Adding: this will be *doubly* true if Dems win big in 2028 and are in a position to impose some accountability. The whole RW media blob, the NYT, the Atlantic, all the Very Serious outlets filled with Very Serious People will be scolding them to calm down, don't dwell on the past, look forward, etc.

If Dems win, they need to completely disregard the pundit class and their cadre of hack “political advisors” and just fucking hammer the administration with every institutional lever they have at their disposal.

Caught CARRIE at Hollywood Forever last night. First time I’ve done one of these screenings in years. Reminded that it’s a super cool place to see a movie in theory, but you end up with a bunch of people who are mostly there to get drunk and take pictures for Instagram rather than enjoy the movie.

David Daut reposted

I was once in a record store and asked the clerk if they get annoyed by Taylor Swift fans on Record Store Day and she said in the driest possible valley girl accent "yeah, we super hate it when big groups of people come in to spend a lot of money on music they like."

I’m generally pretty in the bag for Flanagan, but man, everything he’s saying about CARRIE sounds miserable.

Finished the new season of TED LASSO last night. Not as bafflingly frustrating as season 3, but also just never justifies its own existence. Maybe if it had been a spin-off with mostly new characters, but Ted Lasso now really has no reason to be in the show named after him.

The first season of TED LASSO is still one of the all time great seasons of television, but this has definitely been a case of diminishing returns.

What if the reason people aren’t seeing DIGGER is because there are trailers for two different Johnny Depp movies in front of it? I’m sorely tempted to walk out!

Magic Mountain really seems to have made an effort to double down on live entertainment at Fright Fest this year. Could definitely use some refinement (the 25-minute, standing room only dance/stunt/BMX show is perhaps a bit much), but I have to give them props for ambition and effort.

Nick Tierce@nicktierce.com

Fright Fest at Magic Mountain hasn't traditionally been part of my annual haunt rotation, but that changed this year. I was very impressed by the build quality of their maze environments, the variety and inventiveness of their gags, and the sheer volume of live entertainment offerings.

Now that Dark Harbor and Haunted Hayride have been hollowed out by Thirteenth Floor Entertainment, and with Halloween Horror Nights creatively running on autopilot, Fright Fest comes in at a pretty easy second place behind Knott's Scary Farm in the lineup of major SoCal haunt attractions.

Finally caught up with FORGOTTEN ISLAND. It’s really good! It’s a shame that it’s not performing better. I do wonder if it’s targeting a demographic that is at once too old and too young to go see an animated movie (teenagers).

We all clowned on Sony for dumping KPOP DEMON HUNTERS to Netflix, but I do wonder if it would have looked similar to FORGOTTEN ISLAND (which is coming from a similar place in terms of references and tone and that I, frankly, like better) if it had gone to theaters.

With Fox being gobbled up by the Disney franchise factory and both Paramount and Warners subsumed by Skydance, Universal does kind of feel like the last major movie studio standing that might realistically invest in big swings from interesting talent. Pretty bleak!

A.A. Dowd@aadowd.bsky.social

Universal has a good opportunity to become the last standing dream factory. Lure away talent (like they did with Nolan), snatch up excised visionaries, become the alternative to the Skydance slop machine on the way.

David Daut reposted

Well, here we are: Skydance, day 1. I know Bluesky is the world capital of the feel-good personal boycott, but monitoring these companies and making a lot of noise every time they screw up is going to mean more.
