I hear that Trump is in conversation with Putin and Xi Jinping. I wonder what about? A concerted cyber attack on Election Day by Russia and/or China would be easy to arrange. We have seen some small test runs on hospitals, etc.

The infrastructures of the USA are poorly protected and easy to break down at least for a few days. Trump could declare a national emergency to cope with the chaos and he can easily take total control. -DH

Marx’s value theory is not aimed at deriving relative prices (Marx explicitly says so in a number of places). It is primarily designed to explain the mechanisms by which a working class which produces the value receives so little of it

and is thereby condemned to live and work under such appalling conditions in the midst of astonishing privatized affluence. In other words, the value theory is about the production and reproduction of class relations, not about relative price formation.

Our next class will meet tomorrow, Tuesday October 6th at 4:15 pm [ET] when we will discuss the Story of Capital Chapter 6, The Equalization of the Profit Rate & Chapter 7, Masses in Motion.

In the Grundrisse, Marx says, “This is in every respect the most important law of modern political economy, and the most essential for understanding the most difficult relations.

‘This’ is often cited as if it refers to the theory of the falling rate of profit on its own. But the original text (and the referent of ‘this’ in it) indicates that it is the relation between a falling rate and a rising mass that is ‘the most important law’.

In the Grundrisse, Marx says, “This is in every respect the most important law of modern political economy, and the most essential for understanding the most difficult relations.

It is the most important law from the historical standpoint. It is a law which, despite its simplicity, has never before been grasped, and even less, consciously articulated.” (p. 748)

From the standpoint of the emancipated labourer, the superiority of good social-democratic management over neoliberal malicious neglect is obvious. But that, in Marx’s view, is only an intermediate step towards even more emancipatory possibilities that only become apparent...

in the course of class struggle. As Rosa Luxemburg put it, drawing the lessons of the 1905 Russian Revolution: "The proletariat requires a high degree of political education, of class consciousness and organization.

All these conditions cannot be fulfilled by pamphlets and leaflets, but only by the living political school, by the fight and in the fight, in the continuous course of the revolution." Working-class class politics, in short, is constituted in the context of class struggle.
