new Minor Horror! wrote about The Rider of the Skulls, a Mexican film in which a masked man defeats draculas and werewolves by punching them. it’s a film i find strangely magical, and in the piece i tried to figure out why. i hope you'll give it a read

gardenscenery.netMinor Horror #03-4: The Rider of the SkullsThis is the fourth in a series of five pieces on “minor” horror films that I’m going to be publishing here weekly, throughout October.

new Minor Horror piece! this one's on Head Trauma, an endearingly grimy, downbeat product of the mid-aughts "indie" boom, about a guy sleeping in a tent in his late grandma's creepy, condemned house getting freaked the fuck out by a grim reaper in a parka. please do give it a read

it's October again, which means it's time to start up my Minor Horror series again, where i write about horror movies rarely written about. up first is a work by the notable german avant-gardist Dore O., whose films *are* written about, but hardly ever in this sort of context. check it out

it's not like knowing the bible is necessary for *producing* worthwhile literature, any more than knowing the quran is, only for interpreting historical texts. such interpretation usually requires specialized knowledge beyond the scope of gen ed; seems fine to put biblical fluency in this category

and of course, you don't really need to know anything about the bible to understand american history and politics; you just need a functional model of religion in general as a social phenomenon. the details only matter if you think there's something actually sacred in them – guess what, there isn't!

fwiw i do find the overall argument here a bit specious. you have to know the bible to understand the western canon, but this is bc it used to be everyone knew the bible front to back – reintroducing it into curriculum will just produce more literature which presumes this. is that really desirable?
