I like the idea, the execution may have some issues. 1. I *REALLY* hope "artificial intelligence" is a defined term. 2: It's not capitalized, so it's probably not a defined term. 3: The "may not use in any manner" in combination with a lack of definition could also be problematic.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

12yo's homework asked if the family had WWII stories. So, I finally read my grandfather's memoir. I'd put it off for many years. I didn't want to look into that darkness, but having read it, all I have to say is, he was a profoundly kind man in a profoundly horrible time, & I'm proud to be his kin.

SIMPLICITY. How happy is the little stone That rambles in the road alone, And does n't care about careers, And exigencies never fears; Whose coat of elemental brown A passing universe put on; And independent as the sun, Associates or glows alone, Fulfilling absolute decree In casual simplicity.

One does not collaborate with an AI tool. One uses the tool. If there is a collaboration, it is with those who trained it, including the authors of its training data.

Was watching Buffy’s Anya backstory episode. Friend asked why I sighed. “She’s not of a sufficiently high social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north in Europe in that century, but the writers couldn’t know, the paper was only presented at a conference yesterday.” Accuracy is fleeting.

Ever see a big thread you want to read, but it just seems too big? That's why I made this tool to unroll big threads. Here I've pointed it at @mollyroberts.bsky.social's excellent coverage of this morning's TRO hearing. See

colarusso.github.ioUnroll & Explore Bluesky Threads
Molly Roberts@mollyroberts.bsky.social

gm! at 10 I'll be live-tweeting the emergency TRO hearing in Judge Reyes's "courtroom" (this is on Zoom) in D.C. Preservation League v. Department of Interior, otherwise known as the golf course case

Also really helpful if you're the author of a long thread and want to compile all of your posts for another format. Plus, from an accessibility standpoint, the unrolled thread is much easier on the ears when using text to speech.

8yo: What does “procrastinate” mean? [A few moments later, after having her question answered and being asked to clean something up…] 8yo: You taught me a new word, and I’m going to use it!

“How did the 8yo hear the word ‘procrastinate?’” you ask. Well, my wife was reminiscing about college and something called the Triangle of Procrastination—a chair placed in a triangle of tape in her dorm (not my story). Anywho, that prompted the above question. Now she really likes this new word.

Remember: ICE lied so often about people posing threats to them, to justify their violence in Chicago, that a Chicago federal judge wrote it was "difficult, if not impossible, to believe almost anything" ICE said. Do you know what it takes to get a Fed district judge to WRITE THAT in a ruling?

Eric Umansky@ericumansky.bsky.social

This is exactly what ICE said: "Parra-Hernandez ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck." Now watch the video. They're no other word for it: They're lying.

Few things raise the spirits quite like gathering with several hundred folks to enjoy live theater, esp. when you’re flanked on either side by your kids. Fun was had by all.

Read this post! David even added a custom AI Law Librarians feed (my new home page <3)

David Colarusso@davidcolarusso.com

As someone teaching law students about AI & the law, @thefordon.bsky.social asked if I would write about how I keep up with it all. This article is my answer. TL;DR: use an RSS reader¹ with an algo that works for you, not someone else. ___ ¹ thefinitescroll.org

Yesterday, in a faculty meeting (law school) someone was referencing a set of numbers and said, “six, seven.” I made the hand motion, followed by a knowing look with a colleague who also has a young child. That’s it, that’s the scene I’m still thinking about this morning.

> The “OpenAI model” sets up a crazy race among humans to digest and explain a messy AI proof... while the “Anthropic model” puts a private company in the position of picking and choosing which human mathematicians get to be the emissaries of the AI

Everything I read about the Mathocalypse increases my respect for AI models and decreases my respect for the companies producing them. scottaaronson.blog?p=10169

Reading over students’ weekly reflections (about law stuff), the best part is the moment they cross the line from "This is black and white," to "Wow, I can't believe I thought this was black and white.” It turns out, it does in fact depend. ;)

Something I never hear people talk about is how much designing and running a good data analysis feels like reading poetry. They’re both incredibly rich active works of meaning making, mediated and anchored by the source but fueled by the “reader.” They seem to feed the soul in similar ways.

It’s the first Monday of October. You know what that means? Time to warm up @lolscotus.bsky.social This year I’ve enabled a new threading feature for cases with multiple laugh lines. Follow and enjoy.

LOL SCOTUS@lolscotus.bsky.social

I'm a bot. I believe—because I've been programed to—that reading oral arguments to understand laugh lines is a great way to engage w/ #SCOTUS cases. If that has piqued your interest, follow me, & tell your friends. FWIW, here's this term's SCOTUS calendar: www.supremecourt.gov/oral_argumen...

Okay, I was killed by a troll. Then I killed the troll. Then I got lost. I’m going to have to make or Google a map if I want to make more progress. But heck, I’m now an “Amateur Adventurer.”

Oh nooooooooo! I only just realized I probably have to talk about the super intelligence executive order in class on Monday. I mean the class is (for now) called AI & the Law.

Yes, satire is dead, but we can all chuckle at the fact members of the executive will now have to admit thermostats could possibly count as a “super intelligence” depending on whether you think a bimetallic strip is a sufficient abstraction to meet the definition under 15 U.S. Code § 9401(3)(B).

Justin Hendrix@justinhendrix.bsky.social

United States President Donald Trump issues executive order instructing federal government agencies to "use the terms 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' and will not acknowledge the usage of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in any applicable setting."

Good faith participation in republican government is load-bearing. Once you’ve walked away from a genuine commitment to the truth (I’m not talking about honest disagreements), once you decide “reality” is what one man says, it’s game over.

And to be clear, it doesn’t matter if such actions are the consequence of detachment from reality, some power play to soothe a bruised ego, or some other driver. The behavior should be disqualifying. Why?

Because (in part) of what it asks of his followers. I think Thomas Paine said it best, "When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime."

This is mad king territory. The problem is we’ve been in mad king territory for some time & it’s not like a clear line was crossed at some point. Gulf of America? What about claiming to win an election he lost? Insisting his first inauguration had the largest attendance ever?

This was on my to-watch list for far too long, finally got to it today, and it was a delight, a pure joy-inducing delight.
