Worked a particular piece of text in a scene with an #acting #coaching client. Material wasn't coming easily (some does, some requires more work), but by working it, breaking it down and finding where it is, and wants to go, it opened up and got vivid. #ActingCoach #ActingCoaching #actorslife

evanstonroundtable.comevanstonroundtable.com**Sign up for our free newsletters**! * Daily Brief Evanston’s latest news and features * Raising Evanston 1X week: everything E-town for families Sign up * * * For more than a year, nurses at Endeavor Health, which includes Evanston Hospital, have been trying to unionize. Now, with Wednesday’s announcement that Endeavor Health and Rush University System for Health — where nurses unionized in May — will merge, one union may have to make way for another. The merger is expected to close in 2027 and will operate under the Rush name, according to a press release from Rush. If the efforts of the Endeavor nurses to unionize succeeds before the merger, Rush may find itself with two unions representing one group of employees — which would force one to make way for the other, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Representatives from Endeavor and Rush did not respond to requests for comment for this story. Under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Labor-Management Standards OLMS, a union merger is when one union (or more) ceases to exist and its membership and assets are absorbed into another union or a new one. In that case, the union to be discontinued must file a terminal LM‑2 report, and only the surviving union continues to operate. By contrast, an affiliation is when two unions remain separate but are chartered under the same parent body or share a governance structure. In an affiliation, both unions continue to exist and represent different groups of employees — such as administrative staff and nurses. The nurses at Rush University System for Health, which has three hospitals in Chicago, Aurora and Oak Park, **voted to unionize** its Chicago hospital in May, which is represented by the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC), an affiliate of the larger National Nurses United. Additionally, NNOC is also hoping to form a union at Endeavor’s Edward Hospital in Naperville and last week petitioned to hold an election. The petition was filed with the National Labor Relations Board by National Nurses United, the national affiliate of the NNOC. Meanwhile, nurses at Endeavor have been trying to unionize four other of its nine hospitals — Evanston, Skokie, Glenbrook and Highland Park hospitals — for more than a year by joining Teamsters Local 743. They have not yet filed to hold an election. The nurses have said their the effort is driven by concerns that Endeavor understaffed nurses to cut costs, jeopardized patient safety and routinely required nurses to work past their shifts without pay. Whether or not two unions can represent nurses at the new Rush after the merger is not clear. If the nurses are considered one bargaining unit, then one of the unions would have to step aside. However, NNOC union member told the RoundTable that there may be separate bargaining units at each hospital in the system, allowing both unions to negotiate. The NNOC union member said, “My understanding is that one union would represent one bargaining unit. The bargaining unit being the nurses at one hospital. The 1,200 registered nurses at Edward Hospital [in Naperville] are one bargaining unit. If they win their election, NNOC would represent RNs at Edward. Two unions cannot represent one bargaining unit.” Adding uncertainty to the Rush/Endeavor merger is the fact that the NNOC has not yet negotiated a contract with Rush and Teamsters Local 743 has not been voted in at any of the four Endeavor hospitals where it’s talking to employees. Brenda Langford, an RN who is a member of NNOC’s board of directors, said in an email that the NNOC, not the Teamsters Local 743, “is the only union that has filed for an election with any of the hospitals in the Endeavor system.” However, if Local 743 forms a union at Endeavor and both unions negotiate contracts before the merger, both would have to be honored, according to Timothy Egan, founder of Coalition Resources Group in Horizon City, Texas, which provides HR legal witnesses and consulting and specializes in labor issues. “All union contracts have an assign and successor clause in the contract. Basically that means if the hospital is sold or closed or goes bankrupt, that union contract is still in full force and effect for the duration of the contract,” Egan said. On Thursday, the day after the merger was announced, a Teamsters Local 743 spokesperson told the RoundTable that the merger will not derail efforts of Endeavor nurses to unionize. “This does not affect our organizing efforts. Teamsters Local 743 has seen tremendous support from thousands of nurses across the health care system, and we remain committed to engaging with them, listening to their priorities, and building the collective power needed to address their concerns,” the spokesperson said. Additionally, nurses supporting the proposed union at Endeavor **posted on Instagram** Thursday via an account called TeamsterNurses, saying that “mergers always mean change and we do not know what those changes will be.” The post urged fellow nurses to join them, saying that by unionizing they will have a voice. “The only way we can have a voice in the changes that come from the Rush/Endeavor merger is by forming our union … . Until then, Endeavor executives will continue to make decisions that change our lives without input from us.” ## Support the RoundTable!
