So very amazing to see @datavisfriendly.bsky.social, the creator of the Milestones in the History of Data Visualization website, my reference text for so long, with DATA BY DESIGN in his hands! (And check out www.datavis.ca/milestones if you haven't already!)

Very excited to dig into @dataxdesign.bsky.social by @laurenfklein.bsky.social and team! This mode of thinking has already shaped how I’m planning my next project on the political drivers and consequences of visualizing information.

From WAYWARD LIVES, we learned to direct our attention to those on the margins of the archives, such as the student contributors to Du Bois's famous data portraits who we center in Chapter 5.

The influence of Edward Tufte is impossible to overstate. In many ways, this entire book is a counterhistory of VISUAL DISPLAY. This is particularly true of Chapter 2, on William Playfair, where we explore the man behind the charts, and the people behind his data.

Every chapter is part of a much larger conversation—built on the work of historians, designers, scholars, and storytellers whose ideas helped us see data visualization and its relationship with power in new ways.

All research is built on what has come before. We learned so much from art historian Cheryl Finley's COMMITTED TO MEMORY, whic tracks the creation, reception, and reimagining of the image that serves as the centerpiece of Chapter 1.

DATA BY DESIGN IS OUT NOW🥳! There is still time to receive a custom riso-printed bookplate, signed by members of our project team, which you can stick in the front of your copy of the book when it arrives.

MITP official!

MIT Press@mitpress.bsky.social

"An instant classic. [Data By Design] celebrates data visualization while also casting light on the dark parts of its history ... with rigor and grace." — @albertocairo.com "Data By Design" shows how visualization can lead to a more liberatory world. Out Oct 20th: mitpress.mit.edu/978026205618...

Join us for our Boston book launch on Thursday, November 12 where Lauren Klein and Tanvi Sharma will be in conversation with Arvind Satyanarayan, director of the Visualization Group at MIT, in the Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library.

Chapter 3 of Data by Design focuses on the subject of “People,” considering how we as designers, often brought into projects partway through, might design visualizations in ways that enable the *creation*of knowledge without the *extraction*of knowledge.

One work that we highlight is Birch Bark (2022) by contemporary artist Sarah Sense. Here, Sense employs her own ancestral basket-weaving techniques as a way to interrupt the unidirectional process of knowledge extraction, redirecting some of the map’s meaning-making force.

🥳🥳🥳 Come celebrate with us live at one of our three book launch events in Atlanta, New York, and Boston: dataxdesign.io/events Data by Design will be available on October 20 from @mitpress.bsky.social.
