I once rented a garage apartment for a night on Christmas Eve to be near my partner's kid. We ended joining the hosts from the main house for a campfire that night and talked about the universe. It was very awesome. And very different from renting a house that was taken off the housing market.

Airbnb went from a cheap way to crash in a spare bedroom or rent a vacation house for a weekend and turned into "what if hotels openly hated you and acted like they were doing you a favor by letting you give them hundreds of dollars to stay there, and also it's more expensive"

My Grandmother cut her mother off the old fashioned way. She moved to an island off the coast of Alaska 4000 miles away. Adults cutting off parents isn't new, it's just that now staying in touch if you don't live close by is a lot easier so it's more obvious.

I was told after 1 day at a campaign that my energy didn't match where they were sending me, so they let me go. I had driven 1500 miles to get to that job and passed up another one in a place where I already had friends.

A reminder that when James Hetfield was told Metalicca music was used to torture prisoners in Iraq, he responded "If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure." He also expressed skepticism about climate change at a Live Earth concert. He's always been trash.

I think it's very possible that Eric Schmitt didn't mix up the Hawks and Hawkeyes when looking at the basketball game Jack Smith attended. I think he forgot that women's sports existed as a possibility for Jack to have gone to. Of course, Schmitt wants to hurt trans people to 'save women's sports'

The reason I think that is what happened is that a few times he said the Hawks game was the only 'NBA or NCAA men's game' with a tipoff at 7:30 that day. Which sounds like they checked those schedules but not the women's schedules. And again, this guy claims he wants to protect women's sports.

It's hard to get data about sexual assaults on campus like the one at Cornell because schools have an incentive to hide it. But I wonder if there has been an uptick as the boys who grew up listening to Andrew Tate and those like him are entering college.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel weren't on the list of top 100 TV shows of the 21st century, but the rules stated it's based on where they began. Which is fair for Buffy, but Angel only had 8 episodes before 2000.

If a list of the best 100 TV shows of the 21st century doesn't include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it better be because it's production was in two centuries.

Might I suggest we swap the phrase 'Good enough for government work' with 'Good enough for profit-driven work'

here's footage of Mamdani alongside city workers filling the 200,000th NYC pothole since the start of his term This is part of his push to spotlight city workers and inform New Yorkers that all the fixes they ask for "should be directed to the real heroes, City Workers, who can be reached via 311"

And the closed polling sites were concentrated in poorer zip codes

Good news, full stop. ALSO, be aware of ongoing Republican voter suppression efforts in Texas. Tarrant County, the largest swing county, just eliminated more than 90 polling locations. How people say they will vote is irrelevant if they cannot vote freely and fairly.

I went to a college with a fair-sized Arabic population in a small town. International students were stuck on campus because they would get harassed if they left. One guy had to move dorms so he wouldn't have to cross the road to get to class, after someone nearly ran him over.

There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

Starting to think that entertainment via shadow puppets on the cave wall is the way to go.

It's finally happened: the improved quality of machine transcription and the greater ability to extract value from unlabelled data means "your tech is eavesdropping on you for marketing purposes" has crossed from "false conspiracy theory" to "true and concerning" www.theverge.com/tech/991190/...

If anyone is wondering when Star Trek went woke, it was 11 seconds into the first episoide, when you had a shot of a multi-ethnic people working together. Including a Black woman in a position of responsibility. In the words of Whoopie Goldberg, "There's a Black woman on TV and she ain't no maid!"

This might be the funnier YouGov poll: Canada's retaliatory tariffs are above water with US adults:

I'm at 2, both of whom are in political news lately.

it’s that time of year again, Rolling Stone released their list of the top 25 content creators, which is actually a test of how old and out of touch you are… the lower your score, the more out of touch i’ve heard of 11 out of 25

Being a data nerd means that my tables in my schima are pristine, and my tables at home are covered in supplies for 3 different hobbies, cat fur, a set of cooking knives, and 1 cat.

The fact that someone put me on a list called "Twitter Trolls" for being anti-AI, when Twitter has an AI that calls itself mecha-Hitler, is pretty hillarious.

I really do hate it when dates are stored as varchar instead of, you know, dates. Yes, I can cast them, but it's just a silly way to store the data. takes up a lot more space as well.

“There’s this famous 80-year old we need to you to bring in.” Grim Reaper: “Done!” “Hold on, not that one. This one appeared in Home Alone 2.” Grim Reaper: “Done!” “Would you please stop and just listen to the rest of the instructions?”

We lost Tim Curry and Anthony Head within a few weeks of each other. Both played Dr. Frank-in-Furter in Rocky Horror, one on screen and one on stage.

I wear a bike helmet because I spent 19 years shoving knowledge into my brain, and would rather not have that brain spread out on the road. I've actually had my noggin saved by a helmet 2x. Once I wasn't even on my bike(I was walking down a set of wet stairs to it),the other I fell on the sidewalk.

How much of a 'spreadsheet people' am I? I once named my children in a videogame after Excel formulas. And I'm totally going to get a kitty and name it conCATinate one of these days.

“AI adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months” 😳

If there had been this kind of trans panic over bathrooms going on when I was a kid I may well have been targeted. I was a kid in baggy clothes because i was uncomfortable with my body (I hit puberty at 8), a short haircut, and a square face. I got mistaken for a boy often, but nobody attacked me.

These days I likely would be confronted about going into the bathroom. And as a kid who looked several years older than I was, really wouldn't have known how to handle it. One overzealous adult trying to 'protect' the bathroom from me could have caused a hell of a lot of trauma.

I've always wanted a black cat to minimize how much hair shows on my clothes, but the cat distribution system has only seen fit to send me white bellied cats.

It's unfortunate that the platform used by most progressive campaigns and organizations is using AI. They currently have a near-monopoly, but many customers want an alternative. The change in interface and adding AI might just push some clients over the edge.
