I don't know why, but any time I see a modern take on a pixel game on PC, I wonder how said game would run on the hardware it's trying to mimic. Prototype N by @arrietty.itch.io really invokes SEGA Genesis/32X vibes with the visual and sound design...

While I didn't grow up with SEGA consoles as a kid (besides a piece of junk AtGames SEGA Genesis), I always found them cooler than their Nintendo equivalents, despite growing up with the Game Boy Advance and later on the Nintendo 3DS.

Lately, I've been preparing to make some new assets that will inevitably be used for my YouTube channel's "soft reboot," which basically means that the channel will get a fresh start with a new coat of paint, without any new channels actually being created.

Old videos will still be viewable via a "Legacy Videos" playlist. My existing hobbies aren't going away with the revamp. In fact, I will be doubling down on them, making more gaming and tech videos that will hopefully revitalize the channel and people's interest in my content.

What if I dive into the world of pixelated low-poly animation? It might start off with just blocky Minecraft models, and maybe later on could be pure low-poly goodness?

What I mean by this, is having a 3D space for the models to be animated in, while also being rendered at a fixed resolution, with some anamorphic stretching as the resolution would be 256x240 being stretched to 4:3 to imitate how it would look on a display from the time period.

I know that most consoles from that time period didn't run at 256x240, but instead a more accurate 320x240 (or in some cases wider to allow for some additional detail while still being stretched to 4:3). 256x240 is roughly 8:7 which produces non-square pixels on 4:3, mainly on CRT displays.

I was gifted a copy of #MinecraftDungeonsII and, so far, the game hasn't been too bad. There were a handful of multiplayer-only bugs I've encountered though. So for those who don't want to deal with bugs, you could, maybe, wait a bit longer for a patch.

The game in its current state, from what I heard, is quite buggy. And to make sense of the continuity, it's suggested to play the original Minecraft Dungeons first.

Another thing that I find interesting is people going out of their way to hack NES bootlegs to the point where they're almost good enough to pass as homebrew games, when they're still bootlegs under the hood. Maybe @pirategamething.com has a thing or more to say about them?

This type of stuff has inspired me to come up with ideas for a definitive NES rhythm game, as well as diving deeper into the rabbit hole of bootleg games and adjacent plug 'n play equivalents, enhanced or not.

Of course, I'm not saying that the original bootlegs aren't worth at least taking a look at. The jank is part of their charm, and an improvement hack can take away from that. If you don't want the jank, it's better to play the original game a bootleg is trying to imitate.

As interest as I am seeing more retro games getting native PC ports via source recompilations. Unfortunately, the majority of said recompilations are low-quality AI trash that personally should be ignored at all costs. I get if you need AI for some stuff, but don’t vibe code it all.

It just seems to me that not only PlayStation is suffering immense backlash, but XBOX is losing a lot of talent in their “reset.” With Bungie finally realizing their mistakes and taking steps to earn back the trust of the fans they had disappointed.

This is a fucking bloodbath. 343/halo studios effectively shuttered, arkane and ninja theory to be shuttered most likely, obsidian and rare are being merged into other studios which likely means huge layoffs, playground and turn 10 to merge which likely means the same.

I remember watching a video about how you might not remember the Super Mario Bros. theme right and the fact that many, many NES clones get the duty cycles mixed up, even going as far as to making a simple hack that "un-swaps" the duty cycles, though only for the music.

I wonder if I should, if I do make my first NES game, make it an option in the game settings to swap the duty cycles for those playing on a clone, or want their game to sound like it's being played on a clone despite playing on a real NES or accurate emulator.

As a former Android user, it's depressing that Android is becoming a similar closed system like iOS. While it personally won't affect me much since I rarely get apps outside of Google Play and I've been an iPhone user for about two years, I feel like this is a bit of an overreach.

Sideloading shouldn't require a 24-hour waiting period and a 9-step gauntlet. Google's 'advanced flow' is designed to fail. Keep Android Open! @keepandroidopen.bsky.social keepandroidopen.org #KeepAndroidOpen

Fuck AI and all of models that was created without consent from people who made that data. Few days ago we updated our contributor guidelines with total ban on AI generated code.

There's been a swarm of new high-contrast hacks of certain NES games. I just wanted to iterate that while such hacks are appreciated, accounting for colorblind people for me would require me to make the graphics in such a way that the game could be played without proper colors. (🧵1/4)

Accessibility is a very important thing in gaming nowadays and I feel that, even in retro style games or homebrew games, accessibility plays a key part in a game's success. The more players who can play a game properly, the better traction that game gets. (🧵3/4)

The unfortunate part about trying to implement accessibility-related features in homebrew or retro style games, are a given console's limitations preventing said features from being implemented in the first place, especially consoles with extremely limited graphical capabilities. (🧵4/4)

The steps I would take to make a game colorblind friendly is by either giving objects distinct patterns to where color is not required to tell then apart or providing color palette adjustments for various different forms of colorblindness. (🧵2/4)

One memory I can recall from playing video game compilations is one time I was playing SEGA Genesis game compilation for PlayStation 3 called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, attempting a crash bug in Sonic 1 with Labyrinth Zone. I recall the bug not just crashing the game, BUT THE ENTIRE PS3!

🤯 Our largest blog post and development update is now LIVE! - 20+ Videos - 30+ Screenshots & artwork - 35+ Pages (when printed) worth of content diving into Chapter 1 and loads of stuff surrounding it! See what's coming to Hytale in the next few months! Read it here: hytale.com/news/2026/7/...

Something interesting I found out is that the Japanese version of Donkey Kong Country GBC has the most bootleg-sounding name of any Nintendo game I've seen: Donkey Kong 2001 (ドンキーコング2001). It's not the only Game Boy Color game with "2001" in the name.

The kinds of accessories I feel the NES/Famicom is missing for homebrew development: mice, rumble controllers (real rumble activated by the game, not by audio or button press) and 12-panel dance mats, with panels 1 and 3 acting like Select and Start respectively for a hypothetical dance game.

And as it comes to the hypothetical accessories, they would be high quality and responsive, avoiding the whole situation with the SEGA Genesis Activator and NES Power Pad. I had already thought of a modern homebrew that would take advantage of the NES Power Pad which none of which I know of use it.

Any time I see instances of NES mappers or enhanced clones being used, I always think of that one homebrew dancing game in my head that uses the Namco 163 mapper to simulate many other mapper chips in audio. A 5-panel dance game that uses the Famicom's Family Trainer Mat B.

What's the solution to making a logo for a game mode that heavily leans into the style of large Japanese creatures? Make the logo in the Trident BIOS font, a.k.a. the "Subor" font used in various bootleg NES software.

For context: This is for a game mode on my Minecraft server called Mercury OG, wherein you have two giant mechanical dinosaurs (hence the "mecha" and "dinos" part of the name) fighting one-on-one battles.

As it comes to hardware clones, seems the most common ones being of NES and SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. I've only ever seen one Game Boy Color hardware clone (not FPGA) and Game Boy hardware clones are also quite uncommon. The only clone I've had was an AtGames Genesis from around 2013.

As it comes to handheld clones, the screens are typically of 240p quality, but not matching the actual resolution of the console being cloned (NES with 256x240, SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive with 320x224/256x224). This issue affects a lot of handheld clones that I know of.

For console clones, it depends on the manufacturer and types of clone chips used. Most clones I know of have sound issues related to duty cycles being swapped. I've seen hardware clones without those issues, but they're not as common. They also typically have compatibility issues with certain games.

Nowadays, I'm glad I got a real SEGA Genesis mk. II, even though it obviously is not as good as mk. I. I have an FPGA Game Boy Color clone and I want to try to get my hands on real hardware for the best accuracy possible, even if the setup becomes complex as a result of adapters and up-scalers.

2. 1.7 update is...still coming! I'm sorry it's taken so long, but I'm hopeful that it should only be just a little bit longer. Super appreciate your patience for waiting for this update to finalize.

Now that we've reached the end of the year, I just want to wish you all a New Years Eve, and list out my non-exhaustive goals for 2026: learn Java, Minecraft plugin development and modding, Hytale server plugin development (once Hytale servers release) and get back to making video content.

This has further reduced motivation to post on the platform any further, as images are no longer safe from the perils of gen AI, with no known way of opting-out. This is yet another signal for those to migrate to here as soon as possible, especially artists and VTubers.

Heads up to artists still using Twitter- Twitter is now adding an "Edit image" button under all images posted on the site that allows everyone to feed it into genAI and modify it as they wish with a prompt
