The Grace Hopper Celebration, a conference for women in computer science, has been canceled due to declining sponsors and registrations. Depressing sign of the times. As a manager at Microsoft, we routinely encouraged women on our teams to attend, all expenses paid. Those days are clearly over.

Someone decided to turn on 15 minute lockouts after three password attempts in addition to an aggressive password rotation policy on our laptops. This is how you get people creating weak passwords and writing them on post it notes

The thing that Don is too polite to say in this thread is that the people he wants to hear from fall into two categories: Disingenuous authoritarians and suckers who fell for their act and helped them out. We’re more likely to get the former to admit to it than the latter

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

Next book is Slow Gods by Claire North. This is a space opera that a bunch of people on my timeline were gushing about when it first hit shelves. It’s nothing but wind and rain today so it’s a good day to dig into a new book

Finished Opus and it’s as good as Pope Leo says. @garethgore.bsky.social describes an organization that has parallels to Scientology and wields an extraordinary amount of money and political influence. I highly recommend @clairewillett.bsky.social read it because it rates getting a thread from her

Next book is Opus by Gareth Gore. When the Pope calls a book a “rigorous piece of work” and you’re a lapsed Catholic that’s married to a Catholic who’s very frustrated with the church and loves your recaps of @clairewillett.bsky.social threads, well, you put your name on the waitlist

As theatrical antagonists, White House reporters serve the president’s interests more than the public’s. Donald Trump’s attack on the press corps is an opening to do away with antiquated, corrupting and infantilising rituals bit.ly/4hC4pWR Illustration: David Simonds

For a while there I thought I was going to get away with not feeling it at all but I got super achy after about 12 hours so I didn’t sleep great. Still, no fever this time around

We need fewer colons in console gaming, generally. Fewer colons - but more colonoscopies! If the launch of Galactic Racer has you thinking fondly of Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, it's time for a colonoscopy!! www.cancer.org/cancer/diagn...

The one that really infuriates me is the “we take security so seriously that we’re not going to let you paste into the password field.” Yes, don’t let people use a password manager easily. That’ll definitely make things more secure

There is a special place in hell for websites that have a phone number input field that is hyper-specific about what kinds of formatting it will accept for input, but they never tell one what the formatting requirements are. Parentheses? Spaces? Dashes? Country code? Sorry, you have to guess!

It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.

This is the seventh book in the series and it’s the same fast paced action that I enjoyed from the first three. If you’re this far in there’s no reason to stop now. I will say something that’s not about the book but about me skipping from book three to seven which no gen x, scifi fan has said ever

Next up is This Inevitable Ruin, another Dungeon Crawler Carl. Each book is a floor of the dungeon and @mattdinniman.bsky.social makes a bold artistic choice by flashing forward from the third floor to the ninth. It’s definitely that and not that I screwed up which book to reserve at the library

We make way too big a deal about spoilers. They don’t matter. I read 800 pages of spoilers for books 4 - 6 and I don’t care. I’m still going to go back and read them because the books are good. The stories are interesting.

If knowing a big plot point makes a book, show or movie irrelevant then they weren’t that good to begin with. There’s lots of good reasons to avoid the internet but spoilers isn’t one of them. Rosebud is a sled. Darth Vader is Luke’s dad. Avatar is anime. You’re free.

I’m guessing this is being done so he can claim it’s critical to national security in the lawsuit that was filed. I’d bet the only change, if any, to the plan is to change a sign on a closet from “maintenance” to “armory” www.npr.org/2026/06/10/n...

I can’t stop thinking about this story of a 40 year old Christian Fellowship for law enforcement getting caught making one spectacularly bad hire and immediately disbanding the organization. Feels like they really don’t want anyone digging into their hiring practices or history

Yet another update: The Christian cop group that hired — and then fired — an ex-deputy who was accused of assaulting nearly two dozen women has itself quietly dissolved.

My wife is good about letting our neighbors take clippings from the garden and has built up quite a little fan club. Today a neighbor dropped off some eggs from their chickens and (I think?) quails. I ask in all seriousness: what should I do with the quail eggs?

A couple of months ago when we were stuck in the house I put on Fried Green Tomatoes and was surprised to hear that my wife had never seen it. Turns out she hasn’t seen many movies from 80’s and 90’s so we’ve been watching the heavy hitters that I thought she’d really like to have seen.

So far it’s been 9 to 5, Thelma & Louise, The Joy Luck Club, Prince of Tides and A League of their Own. Any suggestions of what else to put on this list? Witness and Stand By Me I think are good but what did I miss?
