Replying to @devezer.bsky.social

Replication as a rhetorical device is a terrible use of scientific resources. We need more curiosity, better methodology, and sounder theoretical grounding in metascience. This shtick of trying to have the last word on everything with poor methodology is going to turn it into a degenerate literature

Wow. 1) The rapid increase in submissions is bananas. 2) The new rate limit is 2 articles per month, which is also bananas. Who’s producing 24 quality papers per year? Should be 1 per month or fewer.

As arXiv announces a new submission rate limit policy, I refer anyone who is up in arms about it to👇Hogg 2026👇. I'm so confused who would want to submit so much slop? For me (both writing and hiring) it's always been about quality over quantity, every single time. 🧪⚛️ blog.arxiv.org/2026/10/01/u...

when you use AI to write code you put yourself in cognitive debt ; at some point you will have to spend the time and effort to understand the code, if you are ever to use it for anything you put your name on. May feel like a shortcut but really it’s only the beginning of your work it’s not the end

This course doesn't promote AI or teach you how to use it. Instead, it focuses on how language-based AI like ChatGPT works, and ethical, cognitive, and social issues associated with its use. The aim is to give students the knowledge they need to use AI in a more informed way, if they use it.

"Students who use AI for schoolwork tasks, such as summarising texts, drafting or conducting research, attain lower scores in science than students who do not use AI. Students who do not use AI outperform those who do by 20 points—equivalent to being one year of schooling ahead of their peers."

Please share widely: We're hiring!📣 The Departments of Psychological Science and Neuroscience at @pomonacollege.bsky.social are seeking candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Psychological Science and Neuroscience. academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32248

What’s up with interior barn doors and the people who (seemingly) like them? I lived with an old barn door on my only bathroom for 2 years. Zero privacy. The cat could open it. Finally had it replaced with a real door. Put it on marketplace to a dozen requests in minutes. Gone in an hour. 🙃

Kudos to @science.org for this self-analysis of the peer review process. These kind of data are never shared and don't have to be. Wildly refreshing to see it out in the open. Editorial and peer review dynamics at elite general science journals | Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I just asked our printshop if they still do course packs. "Yes ... but it's been a while." I'm returning to paper readings in all my classes this year—no more PDFs posted on Moodle that no one reads.

Neuroscientist Brenda Milner turns an incredible 108 years old today! In the 1950s she uncovered the role the hippocampus plays in consolidating memories, and in the 1970s she published her seminal studies of speech lateralization. Wishing her all the best today! tinyurl.com/3am8syhf #WomenInSTEM

Is the brain a computer solved in 4 posts so that we never have to talk about this again (please please please). 1. It's not the same physically as a computer - it's made of meat. Hopefully this one at least is uncontroversial.

“Somewhere along the way, we've forgotten the computer is just a metaphor for the brain. A powerful metaphor but still a metaphor. an interesting article on the public life of scientific knowledge, but i still find it remarkable that “should scientists speak up?” remains an active research question - the climate doesn’t seem interested in waiting for us to settle the debate

Imagine being a billionaire in an unequal society where the system has been massively rigged in your favor, watching as ordinary people fall further and further behind and get more and more desperate, and thinking a slightly higher tax rate is the worst possible thing that might ever happen to you.

My debut book, Nerve, is six years old this week, and *touches earpiece* I've just been informed that the ebook is on sale across platforms (in North America) for $2.99 U.S. throughout April! That's, what, the price of half a latte?

The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a "whole civilization" — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it. This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this.

My strange NSERC DG outcome: Offered a 2-year grant but my cash-strapped uni must find matching funds 🙃 . This feels like a regressive tax. If NSERC wants researchers at undergrad institutions to do more research (which is what the text of the award implies) they should just provide what's required.
