"Tokyo is being asked, in effect, to decide whether preserving its privileged relationship with Washington requires sacrificing a leading Japanese citizen’s reputation and an institution Japan has spent nearly two decades financing, staffing and defending."

This analysis helpful for understanding Sanae Takaichi's "deep concern" about the US sanctions on the ICC - written a couple of months back. More from Japan that I'll link below. www.justsecurity.org/154571/us-di...

The Russia bit is noteworthy, but a longer tail in bigger picture: "EV sales have risen in more than 90 countries this year, including Brazil, Australia, India and South Korea. The IEA said the energy crisis had “clearly reinforced the case for EVs.” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/04/w...

nytimes.comRussians Snap Up Chinese E.V.s as Ukrainian Attacks Make Fuel ScarceAs Ukraine increasingly takes the war to Russia, the effects may be most visible on the roads.

P4M. Never heard of it? Brazil, Kenya, Canada + the EU launched "Partners for Multilateralism" this week to support UN reform. Their promise? To turn shared principles into practical action. Which sounds a lot like the purpose of diplomacy. New from me:🔗 www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpre...

lowyinstitute.orgP4M: A new club for middle powers – and the same old habitsLeaders keep inventing new forums to fix multilateralism – when the institution they need already exists.

Why a new summit? Held on the sidelines of UN leaders' week, Albanese and Modi will tag along. It's the reflex of the modern era. Confront a crisis, set a new table. COP for climate. The G20 after the crash. BRICS to answer the G7. MIKTA for those left out.

None without achievements – but each adds to the busy-work of summitry, and outcomes drift. Fixing the blocked plumbing of global affairs is worth doing. It's just grubby work of compromise, not another launch. The world doesn't need another venue for debate. It has one. The UN.

Penny Wong said on ABC radio this morning the 1995 AMS “has been regarded as the high watermark of our relations with Indonesia”. Don’t want to get too caught up in words, but remember this was a secret negotiation with an authoritarian government. It was fragile for this reason.

And perhaps the secrecy of the 1995 deal explains why yesterday was an announcement of “substantive” agreements rather than presenting the treaty in full? That, or they missed a deadline again? 🤷‍♂️

Labor pledged to prioritise diplomats over politicians for ambassadorial jobs. Then appointed ex pollies to London - twice. The UK High Comm role has never been held by a woman. Nor has Australia’s US ambassador. Some traditions remain unbroken. From me. www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpre...

lowyinstitute.orgLondon calling, political patronage, and the diplomatic curtainThe Foreign minister’s pledge to prioritise diplomats over politicians hasn’t extended to breaking one posting tradition.

Daniel Andrews shaking hands with Xi Jinping at China's military parade might be more about thumbing his nose at political enemies back home than grand strategy. My latest for @LowyInstitute on former politicians playing "private statesman". www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpre...

lowyinstitute.orgDaniel Andrews, private statesman, grubby diplomacyA former state leader’s appearance at China’s military parade tells a story of Australia’s ongoing China dilemma.

"... can refine AUKUS and make it fit for today’s purpose." Refine, after only five years? Could be read as an admission the initial conception was hasty? Or maybe it's ever so, there is ambition then details follow?

It’s not all about Trump and tariffs. India and China had taken steps toward rapprochement from at least October last year when Modi met Xi. And despite the evident fractures in US-India ties now, there is still cooperation.
