Tonight's movie is LITTERMATES, a movie that played Fantastic Fest and will get a theatrical release in a little over a week. I've seen the trailer a few times, but it doesn't really say much about the movie. I basically feel like I'm going in cold.

My dad has me chasing down a copy of East of Eden. He saw the series and wanted to re-read the book. For some reason, it's not easy to find at an HPB. At the book fair, there was a $350 first-edition copy (pass), and at the HPB Flagship, there was a leather-bound edition for $150 (pass).

There were lots of really interesting books, though. Signed, first editions, very rare, etc. I liked a set of Ian Fleming books I saw: four at $40 each. But I already have a pretty cool set of all the Bond hardcover books I found at HPB a few years ago.

I'm trying to decide whether to attend a Snowflake Conference in Austin on 11/10. If I did, it would make for an interesting week all around. Basically, work on Monday, the conference on Tuesday, a holiday on Wednesday, work on Thursday, then off Friday for the sports conference.

The next road trip is over 2 weeks away, and it's going to be fun. TAMU is hosting a sports analytics conference sandwiched between an MBB game against Oklahoma State and a football game against Tennessee. There are no decently priced hotels that Friday night, so I'm staying an hour away.

It's been a long time since I got so tired while driving that I had to pull over for a nap. I mean, at least 5 years, if not more. It happened tonight on the way back home. I was basically an hour away from home when sleepiness washed over me. Pulled over at a gas station and slept for 1 hour.

Add my love for WILDWOOD to everyone else's! It's simply amazing! See it in a theater. But don't bring your very young kid. Saw one father walk out after the first 15 minutes. Definitely not for very young kids.

Went to several Half Price Books today. If anyone is looking for the Absolute Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman Trade Paperbacks, the HPB Preston Village has the first two books for each. Some in hardcover, some in softcover.

Trying to figure out a late movie here in Dallas tonight, and I think FilmSky convinced me to go with WILDWOOD. I've been interested since that first trailer, and y'all are really hyping it up for the story and the technical achievement.

I did indeed get everything I needed due today done yesterday. Whew! I ain't worrying about anything but the open road for the next few days.

This weekend went way too fast. I really don't want to deal with the week ahead, except for getting back on the road on Friday after a 5-week travel hiatus (not counting the day trips to College Station). Hopefully I can get everything I need to get done by Thursday night to make the trip easy.

Definitely not the best breakfast tacos I've ever had. The tortillas were incredibly flimsy. I tried three types: barbacoa, potato-and-egg, and chorizo-and-egg. I had to gobble them down pretty fast; otherwise, the tortilla fell apart. I won't go back.

After I voted, I filled up the car for the upcoming road trip. While I was doing that, I checked Google Maps, picked a random place for breakfast tacos to order online, and it was new to me. It turned out to be a gas-station taco place a little further down the road. Will see if these are any good.

I thought I would be smart and hit the local polling place early, right when they open at 7 AM (got in line at 6:45 AM). Nope! Still waited an hour. But my part is done.

Travel Day! Hard to believe it's been 5 weeks since I've been anywhere for more than a day trip. With TCU at home this weekend, I had to get a hotel in Arlington, but I'll be in FW tomorrow for a book fair. Then in Dallas on Sunday for the TAMU-SMU Men's Basketball Exhibition Game.

I used to watch PARDON THE INTERRUPTION religiously several years ago, before I moved back to Austin in 2017. I would record the episodes to watch later. I'm currently watching the 25th Anniversary special just because, but it's been a long time.

I loved the CARRIE show and zipped through it. CRYSTAL LAKE is taking me a little longer, but man, the face gore is gnarly! I'm on Episode 4, but I would really like them to move away from people getting their face/head wrecked so much.

Speaking of Half Price Books at North Lamar, I could've walked out with over $100 worth of books. I wanted several books in Collectibles. One was $50, and a 7-book collection (with only 6 books) was in Fantastic condition for $10 each. Plus a couple of other books in the store. But no. Must budget.

One of my Holy Grails at Half Price Books is finding an autographed book outside the Collectibles section. I found one at North Lamar yesterday, which was strange since the front cover specifically says "Autographed Copy." It was only $7. But then, maybe that's just how they valued it.

I ordered something late last night for delivery early this morning. I'm tracking the package and noticed that "my" driver is delivering a package at the nearest high school. That has to happen a lot, right? Hotels and offices, too? I once ordered 1-hour delivery in Denton to my hotel.

The Region 18 Marching Contest was last night, and I ran (not literally) into the Hays HS Band on their buses on the way home. The long-ass line of buses on Mopac was the longest I've ever seen. I lost count. Simply amazing!

I finished the SILO series (novels) earlier today. I enjoyed most of it, and I agree that Shift is the best of the three books. Probably not surprising, I really didn't like the Solo storyline in the books at all. But I felt the same way about the show. Now the wait for Season 4!

Tonight's movie is THE CYCLE, which played at Fantastic Fest a few weeks ago. It's coming to Shudder at the end of the week. From what I can tell, this is a one-night-only event at South Lamar and Lakeline in Austin.

Spoiler: Cedar Park

An Austin suburb will get one of the 30 new Trader Joe's stores: https://www.kxan.com/news/national-news/trader-joes-to-open-more-than-30-new-stores-soon-heres-where/

Just a reminder for those of you in Austin. Next weekend might be the weekend you stay home, away from the streets, or get the heck out of Dodge. I'm doing the latter. Or make a sheet ton of money on Airbnb with your place AND get out of Dodge.

This honestly sounds like an absolute nightmare. I'm glad I'll be out of town for most of this.

It took me a little over a month to get back to this, but apparently it's not working because the Yahoo Finance API doesn't seem to update closing prices consistently. I already moved my script to run from 5 PM to 8 PM, but now it may have to wait until 9 or 10 PM.

I love how my stock bot seems to love going to sheet when I'm not home. But I'm too scared to open up my Linux box outside my home network. And I'm too cheap to put it in the cloud, where it lived 4+ years ago.

Speaking of books, Target has a buy-one-get-one-50% off deal online only (but you can do store pickup). I was able to cross off a couple of books from my Amazon wishlist that cost more than both books separately there. One of them was a Target exclusive, which was nice.

I went to both South Austin Barnes & Noble stores to look for the new Alan Sepinwall book but couldn't find it. Went online and confirmed that the Southpark Meadows store didn't have it, but Brodie Lane did. I didn't see it, though. It wasn't in front of New Non-fiction or in Entertainment.

It's almost 6 PM in the Central Time Zone, and I'm trying to decide whether to spend a few hours working on my Final Project Progress Report, which isn't due until Friday night. Our prof might require next week's assignment to be due that night as well. Maybe I'll just live dangerously this week.

This was a really good post-movie Q&A. The theater was nearly sold out, mostly older people (even older than me). The movie is absolutely maddening, but it still felt fast-paced for a 4-hour film. The intermission was cute, with a 10-minute rocket countdown for lift-off.

Danger Mouse@dangermouse.bsky.social

For anyone in Austin on Saturday. If you happen to want to sit in a theater for nearly 5 hours.

One thing I found interesting was that a security guard stood outside the theater the entire time. I'm not sure why exactly, or what he was protecting. I asked him if he was hired specifically for this showing, and he was. He did come into the theater when the Q&A started, but I'm still baffled.

I should've taken screenshots. I'm pretty sure that two weeks ago, the lowest-priced tickets behind the baskets on the upper level were over $100. Now they're under $70 (non-resale). There are plenty of tickets left, so I'm in no hurry if they dip lower.

I plan on being in Dallas at the end of the month, staying downtown. I'm thinking of going to a Mavericks game. Then I saw the prices. What I didn't realize (until now): it's their home opener against the Spurs. Plenty of tickets are available, but they're also very expensive ($100+).

Today's movie is the M-U-S-K one I posted the other day, which included a Live Q&A with the author and a journalist. When I posted it, only two folks were there. Now it's nearly sold out. Also, that means I'll be in that theater for 5 hours, with an intermission. Whew!

This was a great discussion! Check it out if you don't already subscribe!

To celebrate the release of @brianduffield.bsky.social’s Whalefall, I recorded a very entertaining episode of The Spiel where we nerd out about Minority Report! Listen to the podcast and then go see Austin Abrams navigate a surprising amount of whale sphincters at a theater near you!

Tonight's movie is THE DEVILS, which I've never seen before. I have listened to a couple of podcasts about this re-release, and I'm very intrigued. Will see how it goes.

Definitely looking forward to the cooler weather tomorrow. I'm also wondering if the wind chill in the 30s and 40s on Saturday morning will actually happen. I sold my TAMU-Citadel ticket, so I'm staying home and probably catching up on movies. I still have so many I haven't seen.
