I don't think you can exaggerate how good Ashita no Joe is. You've got one of manga's finest tales of a person getting better at their talents and overcoming the odds, but it's also about connecting with people and then losing them, and what you do when you feel pieces of yourself falling away.

And by the end, with that iconic last panel, you understand that Joe didn't live out a story. Whether it's the end or just a spot before tomorrow, he lived out a life.

The people around him are less of a found family and more of a complex assortment with their own messy aspirations and personalities. You can't control when and how you connect with someone. Just as you can't when you see them slip away. You can love someone so much and it never goes the right way.

Joe loses hard sometimes. Skull bouncing off the mat, face landing in the dirt kind of losses. No triumph can be taken for granted. Even while obsessed with his goals, Joe bears emotional burdens that he carries around like knives stuck in the stomach.

There's a reason why blue collar workers in the 60s/70s and even pro-revolutionary figures saw Joe as representative of them. His story never gets easy. Joe's life is one of waking up each day and learning that even if he's surpassed an old challenge, a new one has arrived.

He sees the sudden death of friends, the constant health scares of those close to him. He deals with the physical consequences of his life, from potential brain damage to the side effects of the desperate dieting to make weight. He rarely operates at 100%. He is never so lucky.

Godzilla vs Biollante is an inspired sequel with a majestic new kaiju for Godzilla to tangle with. The story, blending sci-fi espionage with a scientist's desperate grief, didn't light up the box office. But it did ensure that, years later, Biollante would become a fan-favorite.

The psychic children all revealing that they've been dreaming of Godzilla's return is one of my favorite scenes in the entire franchise.

Hopefully this will be my wife's second anime crush. Her first, apparently, was Trafalgar Law from One Piece. Not because she watched One Piece, but because she saw a picture of Law somewhere and asked me who this hot anime man was

She is very strong and is actually the person that introduced me to weightlifting. So now, whenever we can, we go to the gym together and I swoon over her.

I just sent her a text telling her that she's my anime dream girl (Noi from Dorohedoro.) I'm sure she'll text back with a glowing response and not, ya know, roll her eyes at her bizarre husband

I've been watching Tama's videos for about twelve years and she's always stuck out to me as a curious, knowledgeable and likable Pokémon video essay creator. So I was delighted to be able to serve as Script Doctor for her video on HeartGold/SoulSilver, some of my favorite Pokémon games.

The American dub of the film (named GODZILLA 1985) has one of the most interesting changes in the history of the franchise. In the original, a Soviet sub with a nuclear missile heads to Tokyo bay. Godzilla damages the sub, and the captain dies trying to prevent the missile launch.

Ignoring all of the previous films aside from the original, The Return of Godzilla deposits the kaiju in the Cold War 80s and begins the Heisei era of the character. The buildings are taller, the tone is heavier, and Godzilla is angrier than he's been since 1964. It's a solid effort.

What did this mean? Editing, restructuring and writing - anything to take her already fantastic work and research and help shape it up to be production-ready. It won't be our last project together, but I was honored to be a part of it.

In the American version, though, this whole scene is re-edited to make it look like the Soviet captain himself is actually attempting to launch the missile. It's a funny change, but not unexpected considering, ya know, the time period. Godzilla 1985 came out the same year as Rocky IV.

Also, Raymond Burr's character from Godzilla: King of the Monsters comes back, and he's around whenever the film needs any dialogue with gravitas. It certainly helps steer the mood, considering the sheer amount of Dr. Pepper product placement going on.

Thorwald realizing that he's being watched in Rear Window is one of my favorite movie scenes in history. Shatters the fourth wall that's been expertly created and suddenly makes everyone, characters and audience alike, complicit in the voyeurism.
