Stopped writing sentences. Stopped winning awards. Stopped making damn tasty chicken soup. Eventually realized I've been depressed. Lassoing the horse so I can get back on.

What's weird about having lots of uninterrupted time is realizing that I have to practice doing something that engages sustained attention. It's been a long time since I've gotten to do that.

The adult kid's significant person has arrived in Portland, but to maintain the mystery is staying in a hotel downtown. I assume we'll get to meet him before they board the train on Wednesday. How long before is anyone's guess.

A memo from senior insurance-industry officials warning that insurance modelers are being pressured to downplay climate in their models & that many insurers are already planning their exist from key markets. An explosive fuckup on the scale of the mortgage crisis is building.

So. The thing is. My mom is weird, but her coping skill was to externalize it -- she complained about others a LOT. So for about the first forty years or so of my life I thought it was nearly everyone else who was weird, not me. I promise you this was not better than knowing I am weird.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

My cousin organized a series of masked concerts in NYC so immunocompromised and other covid-conscious folks can still enjoy live music events, and is raising funds so he can keep doing so! Love and appreciation to anyone able to chip in 🙏🏾♥️ www.kickstarter.com/projects/pos...

The work that makes money relies on the vast amount of work that doesn't. Basic income recognizes both, supporting the work such as that of care, creative work, research and study, and acting in the commons.

I saw "First They Came for My Campus" tonight at the Austin Film Society Theater - it covers what happened at New College of Florida. Highly recommend. I think they have a grant to help them show it at college campuses.

In hindsight it was not a good idea to marry someone who had never lived someplace where he could walk to shops. This is not the kind of thing anyone can warn you about.

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare. In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

How do we incentivize people to paint wizards on their vans again I haven’t seen a wizard van in a decade and it feels like we lost something precious Can we offer up a tax credit? Little bags of shrooms? Start a wizard van painting program at vocational schools?

if you tell me "A is a bully on social media(/in print, in whatever specific scenario) but very pleasant elsewhere" you are roughly 50x likelier to convince me that they have the additional vice of cowardice than you are to convince me that they have a hidden virtue of kindness

One of the things us an industry need to stop doing is perpetuating the 'they say this on social media, but they're a sweetheart in real life' about awful people I've had other journos say this to me about some of the most pernicious grifters over the years, some of who crossed many lines this week

I have a dear historian friend who’s leaving academia for a different job. Instead of starting a podcast to bitch about it, he spent years organizing a faculty union. Instead of leaving academia to bitch more about it, he’s leaving to go do higher ed union organizing. Just something to chew on.

At every step in the WI-Gov primary, my message has been the same: whoever you've been supporting, commit to doing all you can to ensure that the nominee wins in November. It's all on the line.

I suspected this article would be extremely dishonest, and it was! King County's never had the highest rate of OD deaths in Washington, & it's brought those rates down much faster than other counties. It's also not an outlier when compared to counties in Florida doing no harm reduction at all

This opinion piece, written by someone with no relevant expertise, cites two sources, both of them blogs by people who also have no relevant expertise, one of whom is employed by a sham think tank funded by the "Effective Altruism" propaganda network. Truly embarrassing decision to publish it. 1/2

Can confirm. Big houses are a ton of work that eat time for friends and social events.

A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
