I loved the way that Clare connects empire, racism, and abolition to our relationship with the environment. It made me rethink the way I talk about native and non native plants. Join us! Going to be a great discussion.

Watching Clarice and this decision to turn Clarice and Catherine into broken toys is annoying. But not nearly as annoying as Krendler's glow up into Clarice's Good Father Figure.

And somehow this is colliding with a conversion my kid and I had about the TV show From and how completely predictable the characters are no matter what happens.

Maybe in response they tell me about something that works for them. No coercion. Just people finding and building communities that they can fit into and that make sense to them. But also leaving room for other people to fit into things that make sense to them.

In a podcast interview with a church a couple of years ago the pastor asked me what Christians should do differently and I said they should stop proselytizing so this isn't a completely new thought. I just saw it differently, that's all.

Sitting at an event at a local arts organization for people with lived experience of addictions and mental health thinking that more people need to know about this, the world needs more of this and it dawned on me what's wrong with Christianity Hell and the great commission. Both of which came late

Neither of those things are in the text itself, the great commission is thought by many scholars to be an add in and hell came much later, it's read backwards into things that now seem clear and obvious but only because we've been told what that's what it means. Much like the rapture.

Before that it was a way to relate to the world around us, material and spiritual. If you find something that works for you, like that arts organization, you want other people to know about it. But I'm not threatening anyone with punishment if it's not for them. I'm not saying we can't be friends

Insisting you can separate the art from the artist is a move to innocence. It tells me you want to read the book without reckoning with how their racist transphobic beliefs are woven into the story You can't perform an exorcism on the things we write. You can't amputate us from our body of work

I'm not saying you have to clear your shelves of all problematic people because this isn't about purity. We're all problematic, we are all works in progress. But as readers you also make choices, you draw lines. Where and why you draw those lines is worth thinking about.

Citation is relationship (Ahmed) and literature is equipment for living (Burke). So it's worth considering who you are in relationship with, and the equipment you are using to build your life.

I'm reading David S Mura's A Stranger's Journey and in his section about racialized students in predominantly white MFA programs he talks about Standard Western English being the common language of writing, as opposed to Standard Black English. It's an interesting discussion.

Mura begins his discussion of this by describing a teacher who tells his students that SWE is necessary and Black students be more successful if they do this, like MLK and Toni Morrison etc. He complained about the students saying he was racist, but he never asked why, or what he might be missing.

If you're interested in writing as a craft, the Mura book is excellent by the way. And if you have other books on writing as craft from the POV of racialized or marginalized writers you can drop them here because I'm always interested.

He was using ChatGPT to translate his paper into SWE. So his work, his research and then run it through a translator to ensure that the professor would be able to understand what he was saying. He was writing in English my friends. Not a foreign language, but it might as well be.

I hadn't thought about that, I mean I had thought about the ways in which we all code switch. The ways in which we shift our voice depending on the audience and the ways in which that shift is punished or rewarded. But I hadn't thought about ChatGPT being used this way and the consequences of that

I mentioned this to a professor friend (not MFA) and she talked about a student from Ghana in one of her classes. She suspected that his papers were being done by ChatGPT so she brought him in to talk about it. Yes, he admitted that they were. But not how you might think.

BDS VICTORY! Last night, the Park Slope Food Coop ratified a boycott of all Israeli goods, passing the vote with a wide margin of 2 to 1 at a meeting that saw record-breaking turnout. Congratulations to the years of organizing by members which made this historic win possible!

I heard somebody say that we are separated from the land through layers of concrete and whatnot. We really aren't. Our computers, the machinery of the internet, the roads we drive on, the plaster and brick of our homes, all of it comes from the land.

We are surrounded by ancestors all the time .. tho I don't know how well they have survived being processed and reshaped. Maybe we're surrounded by bones. That's a haunting thought.

insane to me that @patagonia.com is suing incredibly impactful drag queen and climate activist Pattie Gonia for “harming their brand” is Patagonia not a brand for the LGBTQ+ community or for climate activists? because you’ve spent a lot of time pretending to be both.

I often feel inadquate to this moment. More than that, I feel that what I am *doing* is inadequate to this moment. In this blog I talk about participating in direct actions, but it isn't something I do often. We need more direct actions, bigger actions, more disruption, bigger disruptions.

I'm pausing the reflections on traditional Ojibwe stories for a few months, like many of us I have a lot of traveling in the summer so I'll be writing more about what I'm reading or doing .. tho I'm sure references to these stories will persist. They are becoming part of me.

I think it's ok to feel inadequate at times, just like I think it's ok to feel guilty at times. It may be warranted. But these things should move us towards action or a better understanding of what we're doing (or not doing). Don't wallow in these feelings, let them radicalize you ;)

Bookclubs and reading groups and libraries and bookstores and all the places that make reading a collective effort. That is what I am on about in Bad Indians Book Club. To read collectively and allow the conversations between us to shape us and change us and move us towards something other.

Reading collectively turns us all into storytellers as we take the story from our heads and move it into conversation which means that what and who we read matters. I don't mean fiction vs nonfiction, some of my greatest learning has come from fiction, from poetry that gives shape to feelings.

I often feel inadquate to this moment. More than that, I feel that what I am *doing* is inadequate to this moment. In this blog I talk about participating in direct actions, but it isn't something I do often. We need more direct actions, bigger actions, more disruption, bigger disruptions.

So I struggle with that, and a group of us are building a collective to lay the foundations so that we can have the knowledge and relationships that form the foundation needed for actions that carry risk. Today a friend reminded me how important our stories are, keeping them alive and present.

Because for the Anishinaabe, and many others, our stories are alive. They are sentient beings with spirit and work to do but they can't do their work without storytellers. Books are wonderful, I love books, but they are also isolating aren't they? We write alone, we read alone. Bookclubs matter.
