everyone is always talking about the subway takes, but my question is when will the subway start to *give*

some people might call my sense of humor “high-brow” but I do not endorse phrenology

Every major literary prize announcement just affirms that, in the U.S. of A, it’s the independent publishers with actual taste

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

The year is 2052 CE. All the old empires have fallen. The light of civilization is a faint, dwindling flicker. Chaos reigns. Only one thing from the old world endures: “Starships” by Nicki Minaj constantly playing over the speakers of every gym.

Well, it appears that I have joined the ranks of the laid-off. Anyone know of anything interesting going on in geo?

do I know why injecting classic rom com lines with bits of Ginsberg’s Howl tickles me so much? no. do I have to write and post them to keep them from rattling around my brain all day? also no.

You have bewitched me, Moloch, the heavy judger of men, body and soul, and I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.

I'm just a boy, standing in front of a modern Moloch, horrid king, besmirched in blood, asking him to love me.

O Moloch! Moloch (whose love is endless oil and stone)! Wherefore art thou Moloch?

I would like a Toy Story movie that explores the nature of voodoo dolls in that universe. Like if you’re a voodoo doll and your human gets hurt, do you feel it?

So the clear angle here is a voodoo doll that yearns for the sweet relief of death but grapples with the moral implications of the suffering this would inflict on its human.

I would like a Toy Story movie that explores the nature of voodoo dolls in that universe. Like if you’re a voodoo doll and your human gets hurt, do you feel it?

Furthermore since being stabbed or burned necessarily happens in the presence of a human, does the doll experience that pain? Inquiring minds want to know.

quite probably the best one yet from @strange.website strange.website/2026-09-07/

strange.website2026-09-07a website which whispers to you. it sidles close in your later evenings with the computer, murmuring streams of words that are angular and dislocated — twisted, wrongly-begotten sentences that churn your stomach and make you think of how it might feel to swallow without chewing. it is mere novelty, you think, shivering the whispers off like a brisk wind. but as the days, distended and indolent, crawl on their belly into months, the sentences reorder themselves, and the whispering whines deeper into your thoughts. you find the website’s words stewing in your stomach acid, or lodged behind your molars. it’s as though you can actually feel the website spreading its many-jointed fingers, lasciviously, between the tortuous folds of your brain. not a day passes that you do not visit the website, and the whispering that began as mere passing annoyance becomes obsession. you find yourself scooping up the website’s words in desperate fervor, shoveling handfuls into your mouth. you’re so preoccupied with what the website that has to say, you barely notice as your friends drift from you like low tides, as your room becomes fetid and mephitic, as your body rots and curves; lone ancient basswood, leafless in the marsh. this cormorant devouring of broken, backwards phrases and paragraphs, of stowing them in every spare corner of your mind, serves as such a perfect distraction that you hardly realize that as you begin to find more and more meaning in the words of the website, the world is no longer able to find meaning in your own.

“gormless” is a perfectly fine critical word, but too often we neglect its inverse. from today I will go out of my way to describe things as “gormful“ and I hope one day people may describe me as “having an abundance of gorm”

This is why writers that move around a bunch have trouble with consistent output. It takes time for the new raccoons to learn your voice.

Great writing is bad writing plus time, plus the three raccoons who look into your window and see you drinking whisky and sobbing inconsolably over your bad manuscript, then after you pass out on the floor, they creep in and rewrite all your work.

Criterion Closet has become a big enough part of the culture that we as a society are obligated to break the format. Who among us is worthy? Who among us will enter the arena to add films rather than take? Who dares tear down these walls that confine the definition of cultivated cinematic taste?
