If FDA follows a recent advisory cmte.’s advice, it will not only expose the public to the risks of unproven peptides but also threaten the integrity of the advisory cmte. system and the FDA’s drug approval process itself. Read my latest in @jama.com with Sophia Samantaroy, MS and Isabella Xu, MPH.

Another common myth is that babies are born with low levels of vitamin K because it causes clotting, and if babies had more of it, their blood would become too thick. But think: if that were true, we would get reports of that happening. And we don’t.

In recent years, more parents have been turning down the vitamin K shot. Some parents are drawn to what they consider “natural” practices, so they might turn down the shot because they see it as an unnatural intervention. But babies used to die of vitamin K deficiency, and that was "natural."

Another reason for refusal is the “black box” warning, a label enclosed in a solid black border on the package. But this warning is there because adults can have allergic reactions to IV dosing. Newborns are injected in the thigh muscle, not an IV, and doctors don’t see the same allergic reaction.

The shot works in two ways. Some of the vitamin K immediately goes into a newborn’s bloodstream, so they have what they need in the short term. And some is stored in the liver and is slowly released, ensuring that the baby has enough vitamin K for the first few months of life.

This injection is essential because Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) occurs when babies can’t stop bleeding because they don’t have enough vitamin K to form blood clots. Infants are at risk for VKDB until they begin eating food other than breast milk or formula at around four to six months.

🎉 Another win for kids in New York! Young people face enough pressure to conform to unrealistic appearance ideals despite the risks to their mental and physical health. Companies shouldn’t be able to profit from these harmful pressures on kids.

Unregulated peptides continue to pose a problem. At the end of the day, you’ve got to show clinical benefit in humans: Does it work? Adding unapproved peptides to the FDA’s list of compoundable drugs would mislead consumers into thinking they’re buying drugs backed by clinical trials.

washingtonpost.comSome who have taken hyped, unregulated peptides have regretsAs Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wants to loosen access to peptides, people who have taken the experimental substances report migraines, eye pain and fatigue.

Happening next week! Join us for a breakdown of the first year of the MAHA commission's strategy report and its impacts on public health.

It's been one year since the MAHA Commission released its report outlining recommended actions to end childhood chronic disease in the US. The admin is claiming victory, but have they really made progress? Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_kp_jln8ySuWCb_3SoqdGZg#/registration

Around 30% of the food in the US food supply goes unsold or uneaten. The fix is simple: Congress needs to pass the bipartisan Food Date Labeling Act, which would establish standardized language for food labels that better distinguishes between quality and safety.

Great news! California Gov. Newsom has signed AB 2030, protecting kids from certain dangerous dietary supplements. The new law prohibits the sale of OTC diet pills and weight-loss or muscle-building supplements to minors, closing gaps that have made it easy for young people to access these products.

These supplements are widely marketed to teens on platforms like TikTok with false promises and deceptive claims, despite limited evidence for effectiveness and documented safety concerns. FDA reports have linked weight-loss and muscle-building supplements to serious adverse outcomes in adolescents.

A vote to confirm Dr. Heidi Overton as FDA commissioner is a vote for more measles, more outbreaks, and, administration assertions aside, less medical freedom for Americans. Read my full statement below 👇

Today, CSPI’s Litigation Department and co-counsel at the @aclu.org, @protectdemocracy.org, and others filed a class action lawsuit challenging the National Institutes of Health’s policy of blocking grants in order to censor views it disagrees with. We're unafraid to take this admin to court again.

With CSPI's Litigation department as co-counsel in this suit, we're proud to join this fight to take on the Trump admin's continuing efforts to unconstitutionally and unlawfully terminating thousands of medical research grants.

Last year we filed a similar lawsuit alongside ACLU and others, but the Trump admin's NIH is continuing to make viewpoint-based terminations. With 55 years of experience behind us, we were made for this challenging moment. We’re unafraid to take the administration to court again.

BREAKING: We're suing Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the National Institutes of Health Director for their ideologically-driven termination and censorship of biomedical research grants. Targeting views the government disagrees with for not aligning with a political agenda is unconstitutional.

For one thing, Dr. Saphier, is an investor in Philip Morris International and stands to profit the more cigarettes are sold. No public health advocate worth their salt, much less a Surgeon General nominee, would dream of associating with tobacco companies in this way.
