Part of being able to handwrite stuff like this is having a better grasp on how long the whole book will take (hint: it's NOT short), so volume 4 has bit more of the special sauce put into the lettering than the previous ones.

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All volume 4 is out! Here's some fun bits of lettering I did for the English version. *the difference in green in these screenshots between the JP/EN versions is down to I assume export settings for different platforms

Let's celebrate a master. 🎨 Taiyo Matsumoto brings unmatched art and raw emotion to his pages. We're honored to bring his anthology, Brothers of Japan, to you in 2027. Work is happening right now! Who is excited? buff.ly/AxSxCLK

I'm trying to learn more about making vector drawings that utilize a skeleton. Not sure if skeleton is even the correct term. The calligraphic brushes in Illustrator and Fontlab work like the first example in my sketch. Does anyone know if it's possible to work like the second or third sketches?

Back in high school, a friend borrowed my flash drive to get a paper printed. She returned it later that day with a new file saved to it: "Your new background.png" So here's the image she made, please use it as your new background on your devices. It tiles seamlessly.

before i disappear from bsky again, here's a logo i designed for a discord server i think looks nice

Working on my handwriting font. Got samples of all of the letters and vast majority of the symbols prepped, ready to begin tracing. I scanned them at 600dpi, so each square of graph paper is 150px. Slight fuzziness when loaded into Fontlab, but that should be fine since I'm tracing manually.

knockoff software is making headlines, so i would like to remind everyone not to download software from publishers you don’t trust. even if it’s going viral. especially if it’s going viral.

Brandon points out one of the most vital skills for a manga letterer. Retouching art is something to approach in steps. Fully white out the JP text and isolate that area. Get the broad strokes like boundaries out of the way before doing any detail work.

Brandon Bovia@brandonbovia.bsky.social

Here's a look at how I handle some of these big sweeping crowd shots. If you look at the English SFX laid over the art before I retouch it, you see a lot of gaps where I need to fill in the crowds. Clone tool makes quick work of these, but it's important to establish the borders (highlighted red)—

—and things like the signs people are holding up. In blue you can see all the spots where I filled things in. The illusion holds up pretty well, but I tried to pay attention to things like rotation/angle of the crowd in different parts of the arena.

As usual, most of my SFX are laid out with fonts, and then I loosely trace them with an assortment of brushes to integrate them into the art. Most manga SFX are hand drawn by the artists or assistants themselves, so I find it important to maintain this feel when possible.

Beyblade X volume 7 is out! As is tradition, I will be posting the sound effects that look the coolest. This volume coincides with the end of season 2 in the anime.

Cage can be all over the place, but he's also the core of some of the best films by great directors. Raising Arizona Wild at Heart Bringing Out the Dead Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Ya gotta see those.

This post is unavailable.

Picked up a bunch of Akiko Yano CDs on my trip earlier this year, mostly albums I didn't know. A few live albums. Bounced off those at first, but it's great listening to them now after getting familiarized with the studio stuff. And one that's piano/vocal versions of earlier songs.

The greatest hits album Hitotsukade even opens with a different verso of Hitotsukade than the one on Gohan ga Dekitayo. It's fun being able to appreciate these differences now.

Rod Serling tells me that Peter Falk stars in the next episode of The Twilight Zone. Nice. Not so nice when it turns out he's in brownface as a Castro stand-in.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken volume 8 is out in English now, and my friend Brendon @lettererbrendo.bsky.social lettered it. Oowara-sensei has a cool style that utilizes lots of digital assets, but is still full of lines and text drawn by hand. Here are some panel comparisons that stood out to me.

Dark Horse as a manga publisher doesn't have hard rules about subtitling vs. replacing signage, so there's a mix of methods. I appreciate the stylization for the subtitles on items that would be prohibitively difficult to replace. It's a dense manga, and Brendon told me it was arduous to work on.

Fantastic bit here. Brendon said he considered using a handwriting-style font for this page until he saw this line. The hand-written text does get replicated across panels, but as exact copies that get transformed, not re-written.

it’s worth underlining that the amount which a modern live game is not this is directly the result of devs fighting inch by inch, for months if not years, against the guy at every corporation who demands an explanation for why you aren’t doing this at all times

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

One of the interesting things about working on mahjong manga is that the dialogue will feature tiles. And it can be a big challenge trying to get those tiles to fit without overlapping the text above or below it or making the line spacing too far apart.
