Hacking a voting machine (as suggested in the teaser) isn't the problem. That's how you find and fix weaknesses. The problem is that they were told not to tell the vendor (or anyone else) what they found, so the result could be kept on the shelf and used to cast doubt on election outcomes. Yikes.
Ooh, we could do bespoke social story videos and educational tools, interesting.
Still working out some kinks but I thought I'd share for people in a similar situation. We have a mostly nonverbal autistic kid who can actually do sight-words OK. I realized I could make music videos with exactly his sight-word set and favorite topics using Claude (the model was sonnet 5.5).

Saw this recently when my wife went on a Quest to create an account to see lab results. Filled out all the fields, pasted in a new password from Keepass, the Continue button is grayed out. I try space/backspace in the password fields, thinking it was looking for keystrokes, I've seen that before.
You know what really bends my pins? Websites that break auto-fill for password managers. Why do you hate your users? Things like multi-step login processes, bad field names, javascript screwing with entering credentials… if your website or program interferes with autofill you’re a terrible developer

The psychopaths in charge of America believe violence and savagery are how you prove you’re strong, and every problem is solved through the application of strength, and if problems weren’t solved you weren’t strong enough, and thus problems are met with perpetual escalation of violence and savagery
This is also a reason to not worry too much about "they'll send their limited goons to swing polling places" - they'd have to know which ones those are. Like a couple months ago that woulda been NC, now it looks like Whatley could concede before lunch.
Kansas in particular was a massive curveball that is fucking them up imo. when they began the summer onslaught of TX ads, it was not known that Adam Hamilton would even be the nominee, nor that the NYT would uncover 81 lurid stories of shockingly abusive medical debt collection by Roger Marshall
Reminder: NCSBE is forging ahead with their maximally-hostile rule changes, some reports had indicated they needed leg. review first but they did not. Looks like this is trickling down even to sane counties.
Wake Co Bd of Elections approved 1,671 civilian absentee ballots at 9/29 meeting, but 42 ballots rejected and new ballot packets reissued due to voter failing to seal inner envelope. This is 2.5% of all ballots submitted. If you are voting by mail PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE follow all instructions. #ncpol
Anecdote: plenty of R voters in my precinct (though mostly D), usually the board has to find a Republican judge from out of precinct (I have had a couple from within). So far they have yet to assign one to my precinct. They will probably find one by election day though, I've never been without one
In late July, the Durham County Board of Elections posted on Facebook calling for Republicans to sign up to work the polls this election season. Commenters swiftly voiced concerns that the board was only looking for voters from one party and that independent voters were left out of the process.
Also, if you want to be a passive observer (inside or in the no-campaigning zone), look into the requirements. In NC you have to be trained and represent a party. AFAIK there is no place you can just walk into polling places and observe, without some sort of prearrangement and vetting.

can't believe the car that runs on millions of tiny explosions transmitting energy through a complex series of oily metal parts doesn't last as long as the one that's four wheels attached to a battery
Electric cars are more durable than petrol equivalents, and last longer - major report finds thedriven.io/2026/09/24/e...
That last bit's important. Even IF someone altered the machine results, nobody just trusts those.
I am aware of lots of ways to attack computers, including voting systems. What, specifically, does the article you linked to have to do with space lasers and US election systems? What computers used in elections did Musk supposedly target from space with this? How did this alter election outcomes?
We can't accept absentee ballots at election day polling places in NC, and I invoke this when explaining it to people, and they're usually sympathetic: "They issued me 1500 ballots, if I bring back 1503, very uncomfortable questions will come up. Also please don't throw it away here, ...
Federal officials charged a Utah letter carrier Tuesday with throwing 300 primary ballots in a church parking lot dumpster, an incident that a top U.S. Justice Department official said made the case for stricter regulations of voting, reports @fischler.bsky.social.
This is why I don't expect election day Fed shenanigans in Wake County. It would be terrible triage for them. Our 2 House districts are heavily D because of R gerrymandering. Our Senate race is no longer close enough to win by point shaving. A poor use of limited goons.
Embrace 'they do not have enough goons' thought.

My wife and I did that in 2020, returned ballot in person. No harder than taking it to a post office IMO, if you drive and get around OK.
USPS Postmaster General suggests mailing back an absentee ballot SEVEN days before the election (thus mail back by Tues Oct 27) Alternatively in NC you can currently personally deliver it to the county board of elections office that issued ballot, during business hours apnews.com/article/trum...
I got some unsexy exposure to them long ago, 2010ish? I went to a few NC LessWrong meetups. When describing it to my wife she said "sounds like a cult" and I replied "oh, it totally is." This was not long after the Roko debacle, I think. They saw cryonics as a no-brainer.
I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

Ooh, I should turn this loose on one of work's Yocto builds
I made a tool that shows where the time goes when you compile software. It’s called buildprof. Run it in front of any build command and it puts every process the build spawns on a timeline. It doesn’t care whether the build is Cargo, Ninja, Make, Zig or a pile of shell scripts.

Btw, even among pro AI friends, this concern is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Devs wondering how we get senior devs if the ecosystem for junior devs goes away. Doctors talking about not needing interns. Lawyers not needing paralegals. There's an ecological aspect to this and we need a plan.

Endorse. I think LLM skill with language makes them so easy to anthropomorphize, people are seeing imminent AGI where it probably isn't. TBF a year or two ago I'd have said definitely isn't; they are improving awfully fast. But it still seems like the difference is kind not degree.

If you want to do this don't wait too long, there's training to do ahead of time, so get hold of your county elections board right away. I've done it for 20 years in Best Carolina and love it.
Hey folks, are you looking for an easy way to help out on Election Day? Maybe even get paid? Consider being a poll worker. It's easy. My goal is to get 1,000 folks interested in being a poll worker. Takes ten seconds. Sign-up for more info here: www.powerthepolls.org/creator-char...
The Fortune 170 I work for did this in a crazy way - started excluding, didn't tell anyone (just buried it in the SPD), grandfathered in people already on them. How I found out: I hit bariatric surgery in 2019. In 22-23 or so I was regaining because of course. Bariatrics doctors got me on Wegovy...
Hmm I'll have to check. Lots of employers/plans just straight-up exclude GLP1s, maybe that won't apply to the pills. (Like they used to exclude bariatric surgery, though more about the expense than fat-as-moral-failing IMO)

I can understand being deeply annoyed by someone, but if anything proves the notion that these damn electric bricks are doing bad things to our brains it’s that some people are asking their devices to TELL THEM when someone they DONT LIKE is saying something so they can go engage with them MORE.

Tired of shitting yourself because the GOP's trying to steal votes? Here's info from a veteran. I live in the US capitol of ballot fraud! The good ol' NC-09. I've personally been hit by two (2) NATIONAL NEWS-level GOP attempts to steal elections. BOTH 👏 FAILED 👏 because we WORKED. Here's how.
Please don't overreact to Roberts Court decision on the contemplated USPS ballot moves They simply held that the injunction came too early in the process, before there was a final rule👇 Now we HAVE a final rule & we will litigate it. I'm as confident in our arguments here as in any of our cases!

We kept our votes because we WORKED. And there's a lot of preemptive work we can do to to keep votes from being stolen in the first place! You can: Sign up as a poll worker at your local polling place! www.powerthepolls.org This is the #1 thing to do to protect elections. And it's paid work!
