An interesting dynamic that will emerge with rearmament is that the defence sector in Scotland will play a larger role in the political economy. This could be a double edge sword because it automatically makes us a priority target for any Russian ops against the UK.

My vulgar small n-nationalist dem soc brain thinks that we really should look to expand Marine Scotland's offshore patrol fleet, devolve coast guarding and see what naval capacity they can free up. If nothing else it would serve to bring a devolved nation within the domestic security architecture

The blunt truth is that Scotland *is* exposed because we have a critically low supply of naval assets. Now whether it would be better protected in the Union or as an independent state is a fair debate, but to claim the SNP are soft on Putin or Russia enablers is for the birds.

Lula has flipped the state of Amapa, which he lost to Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 runoff by 3 percentage points. He will win it today; he is ahead by 6 percentage points with 99% of precincts reporting. He'd finished ahead by a hair in the first round, 45.7% to 45.7%.

I fervently believe the biggest reason that John Swinney is First Minister is because despite the SNP being in dire need of opposition and him being relatively bland, he visibly cannot stand the sight of Reform and that took them over the line

Lula has taken the overall, countrywide lead back. With 62% of precincts counted, he is ahead 50.6% to 49.4%, which is an edge of roughly 900,000 votes. He is also getting the shift he needs (compared to the first round) in virtually every state that has reported most of the vote.

I am sympathetic to the idea that casework keeps MPs connected (it does!) but ultimately we need legislators and they will always prioritise casework over bill work

I think also an underrated factor in this is that councillors frequently work for MPs or become MPs themselves. They're basically conditioned to see casework as the be all and end all.
