Iowa stands with our neighbors in Minnesota who are calling for an economic blackout on January 23rd! We say NO ICE in all states. Consider contacting nearby businesses and ask them to hang up the second flyer in this post! These are fourth amendment businesses.

An aurora is visible in Iowa right now! 🤯 (It showed up way brighter in the photo than it looked to my eyeballs, but it was still really cool to see it.)

Last weekend, I got my plants all set up for overwintering in the garage. To make sure I don't give them too much or too little water, I'm using this soil monitoring device I developed last year, which sends moisture data to my home automation server via Bluetooth: github.com/colececil/au...

This will be the lowest ever number of refugee admissions set by any president. President Trump's move is not only racist, but an affront to our moral commitment to protect people seeking safety.

As I was walking to lunch just now, I spotted a butterfly soaring and circling high above me, like a vulture. It was a beautiful yet ominous moment.

"We are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity, and society cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving the curse in its own soul." - Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, 1866

People like this are not criminals - they're contributing members of society who are trying to live their lives as best they can, just like the rest of us. Many of them have fled their home countries because of unsafe conditions, hoping to find a safe home here.

The growing demonization of minority groups and growing omission of due process is leading us down a very scary path, which we desperately need to turn back from. To those who have rightly been denouncing political violence - please realize that this, too, is political violence, and it must stop.

I have been thoroughly enjoying Silksong. The existence of Silksong is proof that good things can still happen in this world. (That's what I've been telling myself, at least.)

Today I realized that CSS Grid is basically table-based layouts but with CSS instead of HTML (though much more powerful). So we've come full circle. (Yes I know this is old news, but it's been a bit since I've done much in-depth CSS work.)

I took a walk in the woods today and tried to focus on being fully present in my surroundings. Birds singing in the branches above me... The rich, earthy smell of plant matter... Squirrels and chipmunks chasing each other in circles... The roar of chainsaws in the distance...
