CLASSIC KENTUCKY POET PROFILE: Effie Waller Smith (1879-1960) Although neither the only woman nor the only Black person to be included in my collection of public domain poetry, Smith arguably faced more obstacles in her lifetime than anyone else included in the collection. I'd like to think that all of these people who are now up in arms about the Cornell gange rape must have never heard about what happened to Taylor Cadle. Such things are never a competition, but Cadle's case is arguably far worse and all but forgotten: www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

motherjones.comPolice didn’t believe a 12-year-old who said she'd been raped. Then she hit record.“If I didn’t find the evidence for them, I wasn’t too sure they would find it.”

Good advice. Just like reading or language learning, home cooking can be approached in so many ways.

If your goal is to eat more home-cooked food it’s perfectly OK not to make everything from scratch. buy the instant rice, The bottled sauce, is the frozen diced onions, the ginger in a tube.... Lower the bar and focus on your actual goals.

I should probably sit here and enjoy the pleasant late afternoon/early evening, but I kinda wanna go distract myself by buying some candy, which I really shouldn't be buying or eating in the first place...

Playing with AI I feel more and more like for me it's just a tool to do other things I probably wouldn't have had time, energy, or requisite expertise to do otherwise. Not sure if others have been having a similar experience, but it seems like it's just been replacing old work with different work.

I think the problem is that for whatever reason, society/the media/whoever have correctly determined we need a way to reintegrate millions of people into society and from that incorrectly determined the way to do so is for the people who were wronged to apologize to the people who wronged them.

The press is so invested in a “these aren’t bad, racist people, they were hoodwinked!” whitewash of the Trump years.

I realize I tend to treat books like food, whereas many treat them more like treasures, but either way the last thing our society needs is to restrict access to books that students would otherwise be reading. #STOPCENSORSHIP apnews.com/article/book... USA: Nearly 12,000 school book bans in a year

Qing 清 era woodblock image of Princess Zhao of Pingyang 平阳昭公主 (d. 623 CE). Helped her father establish the Tang 唐 dynasty (618–907 CE). Like her brothers, Princess Zhao distinguished herself as an independent military commander, coordinating with their family and allies. Buried w/ military honors.

Good advice.

To the writer who did no work on their book today: Did you... Think about your villain's motives? Read another novel and admire the writing? Overhear a conversation and jot down a line of dialogue? Talk about your story to a friend? That sounds to me like you DID work on your book today!

If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

About to wrap up the scifi short story collection 'Dangerous Visions'. I only knew about it because of a book on literary criticism named after (the sequel series to) it. Neither is perfect, but both are worth reading or perusing (some bits more than others).

Kind of in that middle ground between being excited for the changing seasons and cooler weather and part of me being hyper aware of impermanence, holiday anxiety, and low sunlight. Need to center myself in the moment.

Credit where it's due. This planner inspired me with a public domain poem I put on my website and with a creative project that I can revisit every year. It's a bit pricey but worth it if needed/you can afford it.

One day we'll have to talk about the fact that in many countries, kleptocrats and despots enter power due to intimidation and violence. In too many Western countries they yell IMMIGRATION and these same vagabonds get to say 'debate me' on the national news. The electorate says 'hmm tell me more'

Ferreting out punctuation errors (which for me includes places where a comma would help readers but is not, strictly speaking, orthographically required) is way more involved than I ever would have imagined. On the plus side, it will be well worth the effort...

I've heard there are two kinds of optimism: a bad kind and a good kind. The bad kind is assuming things will happen as wished for, a kind of blind hope that things will all work out. The good kind is being aware of the positive side of things, having perspective.

These things should have been banned. Shame on us for allowing them to become commercial product to begin with. Shame on them for disregarding the obvious impact this kind of technology has on so many people, especially women and other groups, but all of us, too.

Some pages from a scratch notebook I copy definitions down in. Am inconsistent about it, but sometimes color code tones (idea borrowed from the Pleco dictionary app which color codes tones). #languagelearning #汉字

On the one hand I really should stop spending time reading the news... In some ways, getting on Bluesky and other social media should fill the 'void.' On the other hand, I feel like it could be a trap where I end up just getting my news from social media and I think that'd be problematic...

I kinda get why people hate on fussy philosophical stuff, but on the other hand don't you think we live in a time where it'd be especially helpful to have rigorous conversations about things like personhood, meaning in life, the point of art, the point of pure mathematics, & operationalizing ethics?

Study and learning (from research to gradeschool and preschool) is one of the most important investments our society can make in its future contentment, safety, and prosperity. More funding also means more voices and approaches, so this is the kind of issue that everyone should come together on.

A good read on the the state of the academy as it stands today. We're in a pivotal moment right now. The academy board must accept the bridge funding or find another way to keep the museum open immediately. neighborhoodfundamentals.substack.com/p/the-academ...

I kept seeing posts about "iced coffee" being brought to an interview and looked up the context. This issue points to the bigger problem: so much of our judgment of people's mental states is based off of inconclusive outer behavior. Approached this way, issues arise at multiple layers.

For instance, the initial complaint was that someone bringing an ice coffee to an interview makes it seem like the interview is a casual errand. This is a massive, unfounded assumption about what a specific person with an ice coffee signals about their inner state (based on how much data?)

Pages from a facsimile reprint of first few sections of a (reprinted) Song 宋 (960-1267 CE) era military manual, 'Comprehensive Essentials of the Martial Classics' 武经综要

To match the theme I threw a public domain painting of Napoleon (only vaguely reminsecent of the generals who supported the Song rise to power) and added a quote from the opening line of Sunzi's Art of War 孙子兵法, oddly poignant for citizens of a republic such as ours.

If calculated using traditional calendar methods, Mid-autumn Festival 中秋节, Chuseok 추석 秋夕 etc. were actually on Thursday, here in the USA. Of course, we traditionally celebrate based off of Beijing time etc., but kinda neat to think about celebrating it as a society in the USA, too.

Thanks to things like YouTube, it's easier than ever to get into things like Classical Music (if you want) or any other traditiona of music, really. For music to listen to while reading or studying, or it's hard to beat a baroque concerto grosso imho.

Noticed some cats live in the neighborhood at my new apartment. Finally bought some cat treats and left a few out in a bowl overnight. They were gone this morning! Hoping it was the cats and not some kinda pests or something. 🤣

Thankfully, I never really had a poetry class in the traditional sense of being told how to interpret famous old poems. I do regret though, that they never taught us a poetry class where we just wrote whatever poems we wanted (or read whatever poems we wanted). Poetry is for everyone...

And reading poetry (whether old, new, this, or that) can help inspire one to write poetry. Now that most of society is literate (and could be even more literate if we wanted to) and everything's becoming automated, we should all spend some more time reading and writing poetry.
