8/ Also: STEP and STL parts imported as exact, editable shapes; STL and 3MF export with colour for multi-colour 3D printing; keyframe any setting and render it to MP4 or GIF.

6/ A library of 43 items and 42 named materials (plaster, stucco, brushed and hammered metal, flint glass, wood, cork, leather…), each one a rendered picture. Drag a material onto an object in the picture.

7/ The optics bench traces the same scene the picture shows, so the numbers and the picture can't disagree. LEDs, lenses, detectors, Zemax ray files. Far field in candela with beam and field angles, illuminance maps in lux, colour uniformity. Every number with its standard error. #opticsdesign

4/ Glass the way glass behaves: caustics from photons traced from the sun, a photon map for what's seen through glass or in a mirror, dispersion that splits white light in a prism, dichroic coatings. Any glowing surface is a light. And a haze box, so beams show in dusty air. #raytracing

5/ Light as numbers: switch the view to lux on surfaces, or luminance in cd/m², in false colour. Every pixel carries an error bar. Pin a point or draw an area: mean ± error, min, max, uniformity U0, CCT and Duv.

2/ Nothing to install, no server. The page runs on your own graphics card, and your projects are kept in the browser as you work. Every surface is a signed distance function: exact code, not a mesh, so a sphere is a sphere at any zoom.

3/ Light in physical units. The sun is set by the lux it delivers, at its real 0.53° size; the sky by the lux it puts on the ground. A white floor under both reads its textbook value to 0.1 %. One layered material model for everything, energy conserved to 0.04 % in a white furnace test.

This is pretty cool. Shadytracer can now import stl or step files from cad software like Onshape and convert it to editable signed-distance functions. Yes, even an stl. Only works for relatively simple models. I'll try to make it more robust and accept more complex files.

3D pathtraced orthographic view of a Menger cube made with dichroics, illuminated by a single spot. Get it? 😀 #webgpu #raytracing #creativecoding

It took a while to get these done but they might be useful.

Eight short tutorials for Muxit, from installing it to your first working dashboard. All of them work on the free plan. Most need no hardware: a built-in test device stands in for a real instrument. www.youtube.com/playlist?li...

Calling all NYC artists — painters, filmmakers, poets, musicians and more! Did you know our city provides grants to support your work every year? And this year, we're DOUBLING the amount — from $5,000 up to $10,000 per artist! Deadlines are approaching fast — apply today at nyc.gov/artistgrants.

Building a web-based render engine based on SDF' (signed distance functions). Too many features to mention: drag/drop primitives, materials, modifiers (bend, twist, multiply) etc. These will give you small editable webgpu codeblocks. Create videos with keyframes for every parameter in the scene,

Physically correct raytracing: define lightsources and specify lumens or luminance, beam width. Measure resulting performace, color on target. Work in progress of course

Something I've been building for a while now. It controls everything in my lab. Fun project.

Muxit went free for anyone to try a few months back. Since then it's grown a lot — here's what's new.
