Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

In addition: assets held are not taxed until they’re sold. If they’re never sold, but borrowed against, no tax - ever. Okay, you pay interest on the loan - what rate? 5%-6%-7% Nice work #r4today

Tax Justice UK@taxjusticeuk.bsky.social

"It is bonkers that income from wealth is taxed at a lower rate than income from work." Great to hear Ellie Chowns call out CGT for what it is, a ridiculous unfair give away to the country's richest. We need reform now.

Johnson being a journalist knew the power of a bad headline. An overwhelmed NHS would be a bad one. So the vulnerable and elderly were left exposed in care homes to pay the price for “Saving the NHS” and keeping the headlines neutral. He and Hancock must answer for that. Criminal imo. #wato

Robert Jenrick backed Remain in 2016. His subsequent conversion to Brexit zealotry was obviously nothing so vulgar as personal ambition or political advancement. No, It was undoubtedly a profound ideological awakening. #wato

Trump has imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, and while his kids "negotiate" a Ukrainian peace deal, he's paying Putin to breach sanctions. Hegseth is live-streaming an execution by firing squad, and gave the UFC a binding contract to train the US military in hand to hand combat.

Ms Badenoch can promise whatever she likes. The more awkward truth TheTories are in third place and her bounce is relative, up from an historic low. When you’re that far behind, promises are cheap. Irrelevance sometimes breeds desperation #r4today

Jeffrey Archer: a politician ahead of his time. He’d fit remarkably well into today’s post-truth political landscape. #wato

This post is unavailable.

Opinion: Ms. Badenoch is delusional and at best, mediocre. Johnson hollowed out the Tory barrel and she’s scraping the scurf from the bottom. Meanwhile, the money needed to fight a serious general election is drifting to hard right parties. The Conservatives look spent and so does Ms B. #r4today

Kemi Badenoch pays tribute to Jeffrey Archer, former Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party who was sentenced to four years in prison for perjury and perverting the course of justice. A somewhat elastic relationship with rehabilitation when it suits… #r4today

Mr Webb appears to have learnt remarkably little about superspreading from the pandemic, though perhaps that’s unsurprising if, as some of his MAGA associates would have it, the whole thing was an overblown conspiracy anyway… #r4today

www.theguardian.com/politics/202... Many political commentators spent yesterday telling us how Miss Badenoch is a Prime Minister in waiting, meanwhile John Crace tells us some truths. On the shadow chancellor’s speech: “It was like watching a less sentient version of the PG Tips monkey” #r4today

In 2016 Leave had all the emotion and Remain was stuck defending the ‘boring’ status quo. Soon Rejoin may get all the longing and the loss while Leave have to factually defend how it’s gone. There’s a beautiful symmetry in there somewhere.Meanwhile: (not sourced-but funny nonetheless) #r4today

My teacher brother has just informed me that his primary school kids now refer to anything shit or old fashioned as "Brexit". Which has made my morning.

The 50,000 prison places? That’s a nice round number to quote. Perhaps they’re being built where the 50,000 nurses, 40 new hospitals and nationwide gigabit broadband were meant to go. Tories love an infrastructure promise, especially one with a catchy number. Put Lord Grayling on it… #r4today

Why is the public confused about wealth taxes and climate change? Because for 40+ years, lobby groups and think tanks have been paid to confuse them. And it started with Thatcher pulling off one of the greatest financial cons in modern history. 🧵 @mrjamesob.bsky.social @lbc.co.uk

“If you try to go back into the EU, you’ll divide the country,” says Andrew Neil on #newsnight Keep up, Andrew. Brexit already did that.

Before AI deepfakes, I distinctly remember Michael Gove’s daughter posting a TikTok of him asleep on the sofa while she mimed vomiting at the camera. Her old TikToks did exist and were later wiped. If only someone had saved that one. #r4today

Andy Burnham has done in 10 weeks what Keir Starmer failed to do in two years: use a huge majority to push a bold agenda aimed at reconnecting with large parts of the electorate. Naturally, the right will attack it, but what’s the point of a massive majority if you’re afraid to use it? #r4today

Gove’s cynical and performative media rehabilitation strategy is vomit inducing. It’s a pity that #r4today don’t remind him of his Ian Hislop ‘HIGNFY’ roasting.

I suspect it’s focus groups suggesting we do away with the triple lock. Knowing a few in that likely consulted demographic, I suspect they don’t think contributing to a personal pension is worth it either. That’s the paradox of populism: unintended consequences. Careful what you vote for. #r4today

I once innocently blew a police armed-robbery surveillance because my car matched the reported getaway car make (not the colour). The scramble to CYA was rather impressive & initially I got blamed. That was a local & costly op. Fairford may have cost more. Now watch the blame find someone. #r4today

The Chagos deal: negotiated largely by Mr Sunak’s Conservative government which conducted 11 rounds of negotiations versus Labour’s two before the October 2024 political agreement. Mauritius would obtain sovereignty while the UK retained control to operate Diego Garcia for 99 years. #r4today

I wonder how the inhabitants of the small Oxfordshire village of Nimby are feeling today after their recent 15 minutes of fame, given that nothing has changed? #r4today

When I started running regularly back then-with earphones, because I thought it was the thing to do-this was always the first track on the playlist. I’ve been earphone free for over 20 years - but thanks @kylie. You got me started

If all new migrant crossings were stopped, and let’s go one further - if every asylum seeker currently in the UK could be repatriated, that chaps life (from Portsmouth) would not improve one iota. The chip on his shoulder wouldn’t disappear. #wato

I haven’t verified whether this is AI, but if genuine, seeing disabled men and elderly women physically attacking someone for holding opposing views is deeply concerning. History (1930s Germany) reminds us how quickly intolerance of opposing views can become normalised by ordinary citizens. #r4today

Content warning: Multiple men violently assault a female protester at Reform's conference at the Birmingham NEC, to the visible delight of Nigel Farage.

I listened to Farage’s speech live yesterday. Mostly laughable hot air until the “first 100 days”. Then came an ominously familiar 1930s authoritarian playbook to weaken Parliament, purge the Civil Service, neuter the judiciary, then use a plebiscite to legitimise the new order. #r4today

Half of Reform left the Tories because they were tired of being associated with a bunch of serially corrupt incompetents. The other half were kicked out because they WERE the serially corrupt incompetents. It's like watching a snake eat itself.

Reform UK Ltd tying itself in knots over impermissible donations and the imaginative stories surrounding them. Luckily, Head of Policy Dr James Orr has a doctorate in Theology and Religion. When your defence requires faith and parables it pays to have a theologian on staff. #r4today
