Two things: 1. AI is NOT a search engine. 2. BlueSky is public by design, everything is accessible, it has been this way since it was launched. With a bit of searching you can find the hosepipe broadcasting everything for fediverse peers to connect with.

mmmm, stuff!

Computing has got itself into a weird place, on the desktop there's a drive to put everything into the browser, but on phones & tablets every single website needs its own app. This is what you get when almost everything has been developed to its most effective state but bigger profits are demanded.

Telling that Wes Streeting considers someone diagnosed with ADHD has been 'written off'. Also telling that the government commissioned a review in the face of independent reviews finding there is no overdiagnosis, just increased awareness & historic underdiagnosis of girls & women.

🧵 As front-page headlines go, this has to be one of the most misleading I've seen in a long time It's an out-and-out lie But notice the trick they use to get away with it...👀 *They're* not lying - they're just quoting someone else who is👍🏻 In this case, the leader of the opposition🙄 1/33

It seems like this is a good time to tell you all why LLMs are never, and can never be, conscious.

Laura Jedeed@laurajedeed.bsky.social

Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes! Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on

the insidious nature of the anti trans movement laid out. women deserve safe spaces, but the campaigns against people fighting for basic human decency across all society does nothing to create that. everyone deserves safe spaces. everyone includes trans people. part two: bsky.app/profile/robi...

unfortunately it is not possible to engage with activists in a mature way, they do not argue in good faith, or understand nuance. either because they are blind to alternative views, unable to countenance the opposing case, or because they know they have no real counter argument to their chosen view.

it is held as a religion, a point of faith. not an opinion to be tested. we see this more & more as we're served up everything we want from the internet & become increasingly intolerant of those things we do not. they don't have to be big things, pavlov has trained us to pounce.

to state that all trans people pose a danger is the same argument made around 2010 when all people in hijabs were terrorists. it isolates a small & already powerless subset of our society & loads them up with a label to justify to the attacker their unwarranted hate.

Here’s a bank saying the thing that everyone else in the EU can see with their own eyes. If you weaken climate action because you want better economic outcomes, your economic outcomes get much worse because of the bad climate change you could have acted on.

Few people understand that the UK university system is in crisis, but even fewer realise that many of the people losing their jobs are amongst the best in their fields

Glen O'Hara@gsoh31.bsky.social

So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

The licence fee is the biggest bargain in the UK. Not only do you get dozens of TV channels, radio stations, websites, apps, educational resources etc but it supports the infrastructure that enables all terrestrial TV.

Shade from street trees reduces surface temperatures by an average of 12°C, and concrete surfaces shaded permanently by a bank of trees are cooled by up to 20°C during a heatwave. Think about that next time someone’s threatening to chop down a tree in your area.

Limping home on an #EMRAurora train that's "not fit for purpose". Aside from the wonky arrivals system being stuck on the last journey's terminus, some sockets not working & doors not closing most other things seem fine. It's so bad we can't stop at Leicester. Can trains have PTSD?

Social services, health & housing are all part of the welfare budget constantly being attacked. Councils have struggled & failed for years under increasing budgetary pressure from elected officials promising lower taxes and delivering bargain basement service. This shows how those policies work.

In November 2023, police discovered the decayed corpse of Tracey Turnell in Walthamstow Market. She had no phone, job, passport, friends or lovers. There wasn’t a single photo of her. It was as if, in her far too public death, she entered the public record for the first time. Who was she?

Today marks 100 years of the weekend. We’ve assembled outside Ford’s Dagenham plant - the birthplace of the five-day week - to say: a century of this model is enough. The world has changed. Technology has advanced. It’s time our working week caught up.
