contrary to common belief the martin lewis “moneysavingexpert“ character was not originally invented by the uk treasury to help smooth the public rollout of their budgets

Saw a market stall on a beach in Cyprus years ago with a sign advertising its wares that I found doubled as one of the most profound statements on existence I had ever seen.

if i were asked to name three geniuses i probably wouldn’t say einstein, newton…you know. i’d go: pitch curator in durban, pitch curator in gqeberha and pitch curator in cape town

of course the cut in standing charges saving the average household £45 a year is welcome reform but without a robust industrial policy to develop high quality british made shmups for a government backed nintendo switch e-shop all the money saved will simply end up being sent straight to japan

waiting to see if the chancellor was being honest when i agreed to defend the governments stockpiling strategy on bluesky in exchange for the treasury purchasing the massive yellow wind turbine towers in leith as permanent sculptures for the city

Feel like at some point in the 2010s a lot of people started thinking that TV shows allowed more room for concepts, ideas to breathe and grow than movies and you have to say that was an immensely harmful mindset.

HBO is bringing us a new take on Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS, with Sarah Snook set to star in the limited series. Set in Alaska, this present-day take will center on a murder mystery, new characters, and, of course, terrifying bird attacks! Thoughts? 👀 Source: @deadline.com

ridiculous how my wife gets away with reading choices and vicious opinions towards particular writers which would immediately mark me out as a reactionary bore…and apparently you can’t even complain just because of the violent misogyny underpinning all facets of society across all of human history??

sorry i know it’s a busy day in the imaging department and you have a lot to get through but do you mind if i just spend a couple minutes admiring the big scanning machines after my appointment ?

uneasy about how many left wing proposals are just left wing tax revolts. of course our existing taxation systems can often be structured unfairly but feels like a terrible long-term bet to narrow taxation more and more, especially as it is meant to be the “claw back” mechanism for universalism

ie it’s common to point out that systems like the NHS are far more politically resilient than means tested ones as everyone is invested in it but that also applies to the taxation underpinning it. a narrow one where more & more are cut out on cost of living grounds is also far less sustainable.

dysfunctional political settlement where devolution provides new political opportunities for successful regional leaders but limited powers granted leaves them woefully underprepared for no.10. if burnham had spent years practicing with a local manchester weather machine we wouldn’t be in this mess.

You'll all see the wisdom of this take next week when your timeline is full of the sorry spectacle of Brits with Strong Opinions about how different messaging could have prevented Randy Bumgardner from winning Iowa's 4th congressional district

starting to regret some of my lifelong hatred of traditional celebrity culture now i end up hearing discourse about the relationship dramas of streamers and podcasters. at least brangelina had glamour.

as far as i can tell the most popular use case at the moment of the latest advances in easily publicly accessible LLM’s is making crap blurry ports of later console games for the 3ds. the version of fallout 4 looks strangely compelling tbf.

notion that there are four seasons is a common misconception. there are in fact two seasons of variable lengths - “the dog constantly makes your flat mucky” and “the dog doesn’t make your flat mucky“

feeling depressed about your holiday ending and the miserable weather? getting dragged into stupid fights on bluesky? have you tried 8-13 little runs along the beach with your dog? you certainly won’t regret 8-13 little runs along the beach

lovingly adopt a tone of gentle exasperation at your usage underpinned by a mixture of genuine concern at your inability to shake off your bad habits and awareness that you can sometimes be embarrassingly prickly about it when the topic is raised?

love these issues so much. a poetry magazine which doesn’t feel like a poetry magazine (complimentary) and makes you want to read more poetry by simply being fun and engaged. fits nicely in your back pocket too!

Everyone thought Lula was cooked, hopeless. Then he bought a phone and started posting and now he's gonna get a 4th term. The lesson is to never stop posting.

FIFA have confirmed Balogun’s suspension has been lifted and he *will* be allowed to campaign to annull the results of the Brazilian Presidential Election

odd thing about stockpiling backlash is that it’s guidance. those suffering immediate financial hardship or restrictive housing, as adults can just say “that’s not appropriate for me now”. in a crisis they still benefit from reduced service pressures and neighbour support when others can follow it.

people are acting like they are demanding the entire public either buy now or sign away their right to any future emergency support but this kind of communication is a very basic tool of any governance. hate this tendency to reduce all politics to simply making stuff illegal or not
