On October 14, we gave our NYC PhD Ready Workshop Series at the SUNY Global Center on "Applying to Graduate School". We are thankful to the Stony Brook University Center for Inclusive Education and Stony Brook University Graduate School for hosting us! #CientificoLatino #NYC #PhDReady

Elisa Trujillo, PhD Candidate at The Rockefeller University, and Robert Fernandez, PhD talked to college students about preparing a strong graduate school application, what they should know about the changes in the graduate school admissions landscape, and breaking down the personal statement.

Main takeaway is the importance of coordinating with your letter of recommendation writers to ensure that your personal statements and their references are in alignment in discussing key points you want highlighted about your potential to succeed in graduate school.

For employers: post faculty and industry jobs, find job seekers and browse resumes. All job ads posted by our community will also be amplified through our monthly newsletter reaching 6k subscribers.

Every step raises awareness, but your gift is what keeps our programs running. Here's what that looks like: $100 covers a student's graduate school application fee, that's ten people giving $10. No gift is too small!

If you want to help, spread word of our work by sharing this post to your network. We appreciate our community's support as every scientist deserves a chance to follow their dreams. #CientificoLatino #WalkforCL

By the end of 10/31, our new goal is to walk 3.14 million steps and to mark our final stretch, our Executive Director, Robert Fernandez, PhD will walk roughly 32 miles around Manhattan (~12 hr walk).

We are thankful that our community believes in opening doors to graduate education in STEM for students from low-income, first-generation, and underserved communities, even during these times.

Hear from faculty in organic chemistry, molecular biology, astronomy, and neuroscience, who bring years of experience on admissions committees and will share how applications are reviewed, what makes a competitive applicant, and how to prepare for this graduate school application cycle.

Come join Robert W. Fernandez, PhD (Yale University Alumni) and Elisa Trujillo (PhD candidate at Rockefeller University) at the SUNY Global Center, in partnership with the Stony Brook University Center for Inclusive Education and Stony Brook University Graduate School.

Workshop topics: ✅ What a PhD application consists of and how to choose a PhD program ✅ Timeline on preparing for graduate school applications ✅ Breaking down the personal statement
