Dear all, a chairde, Please find here the programme of the Paris Lille Irish Seminar for 2026–2027. PLIS is the joint seminar organised by the ERIN team at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle and the Aire Irlande team at Université de Lille, previously known as the Irish Thursdays / Aire Irlande seminars.

Sorry to read this. Nini was researching Irish connections to enslavement and abolition long before anyone else in the field and we all owe her such an enormous debt for doing all that foundational work. It was one of the great, not-heralded-enough, contributions to modern Irish history.

We have heard the very sad news that Nini Rodgers died yesterday, after a period spent in a nursing home. Her former colleagues in the School remember her fondly, while others will have known Nini through her ground-breaking research on the history of slavery and Ireland.

This piece by @joshcaress.bsky.social - published by @lukeoneil47.bsky.social - is by far the most perceptive take on American identity + myth + memory I've read this anniversary...

"There has never been a time in American history when our country was not mythologizing itself to cover atrocities.... More than any other nation, America is an idea. And that idea is a phantasm, a collective dream, or—more plainly—a fantasy." www.welcometohellworld.com/america-250-...

"Bruisch’s book stands as a model of thoughtful, methodologically sophisticated historical writing—one that would serve both undergraduate and graduate students especially well as an example of how history can and should be written." So delighted! Wanna bring 🔥 Burning Swamps 🔥 into your classroom?

While I am glad that more people are acknowledging the scope of Harvard officials' enslaving and profiting from slavery (this database is a small part of a much larger history), I also hope that people will engage with the ongoing violence of this sort of data:

Harvard University's top leaders likely enslaved thousands of people between the founding of the school in 1636 and the defeat of the Confederacy, according to new research.
