This is like how I've never seen Titanic. I'm not actively avoiding watching it, but it comes up in conversation now and then and after a while it feels like part of my personality.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

I’ve somehow never been to a Cheesecake Factory, and now I feel like I’ve got to keep it up for the sake of the bit.

Titanic came out when I was in elementary school and *everybody* went to see it in the theater. It was constantly talked about and all the girls were obsessed with Leo. But my parents didn't really bother with that kind of thing so I was always left out.

As an adult, I've gone back and watched a lot of things I wasn't allowed to or just missed out on. But I'm not actually that interested in seeing Titanic, so it's still this curious fact about me that comes up oddly frequently.

Normalise emailing people to say you read and enjoyed their work. Academia can be a bleak conveyorbelt of endless negative feedback. Sometimes it's hard to know whether anyone values your work. That's why it means so much when someone takes the time to message and say so! Be that person.

I don't care for how this has become almost a joke people throw in along with how he's old and fat and orange rather than a stomach-churning, existentially horrifying thing for a nation to know about its head of state.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

I'll never forget the day we evacuated campus at the outbreak of Covid, obviously for a lot of reasons. But at one point a model stopped me in the hallway and told me how awesome he thought my color scheme was that day. A moment that took some of the weight off of what was happening.

Artists don't need to be miserable, depressed people to be great. That is a toxic myth. But art does need to be miserable and painful and scary at points to be good. There's no shortcut.

Another brilliant essay by Kate Manne. A lot of people want some shocking explanation for why fraternities perpetrate gang rapes. But we already know the answer because patriarchy (and its associated norms like "bro code") are everywhere. The familiarity is why it's so unsettling.

I wrote about men in groups in connection with Jane Doe and the Cornell case. Some of what I discovered in my research shocked even me (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/o...

The amazing science journalist, Helen Branswell, died recently. Let's celebrate her incredibly contributions by sharing her writing, like the article below. She made a difference in dark times. Thank you, Helen! 🙏❤️🙏❤️ www.statnews.com/2022/02/14/w... via @statnews.com

statnews.comWhy Covid-19 vaccines are a freaking miracleThe pandemic has been catastrophic. But consider something that may have escaped you: You have witnessed — and you are a beneficiary of — a freaking miracle.

Surely if something is a "biological reality", it would be easy enough to cite a source with evidence for that claim?

Okay, I am looking at this gendered reading piece by Ross Barkan and I have many thoughts and questions. Part of the thesis is this:

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

I feel like we don’t talk about millennials in particular, hitting our 40s - in earlier generations many of us would be reaching the peak of our careers, but because of disaster after disaster, locust after locust eating our industries, many of us are on our 3rd or 4th fresh start.

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

MA Democrats: Vote No on Question 3 Apart from the fact that it would make it easier for big money to rig elections, it would also give Republicans the power to eliminate a candidate who could potentially win a normal Dem primary. Plus... Moulton is for it, so you know it's a bad idea.

I was raped at a frat party. It’s a shockingly common experience and preventative interventions in college are way too late.

In the aftermath of the Cornell rape case, @espiers.bsky.social reflects on her own experiences with sexual assault, and how our current models of consent-based sex education may not be enough.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

All of this is happening to college students at the very beginning of their adult lives. It shapes everything that comes after. And it shapes society for the rest of us too. Imagine what our world would look like if all of those women had been able to complete their educations, free from violence.

Kat is right about all of this. One of the reasons that college sexual violence is uniquely devastating is because it changes the victim’s entire future.

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

What about her future? What about how hard she worked to be there? What is to become of her life now? What process of justice could possibly right these wrongs? And how much more will she lose in the process of trying to get it? How much more of this are we all supposed to tolerate?
